Nice shot mrova! I love the Outerbanks!
Thank you Sailorsmom! We've been going down there since '94. Love that place and especially love being down on Hatteras Island as opposed to the Nagshead area.

#3 is Outstanding. Why is it named Canadian Hole?
Scootersurfs, thank you! This is a nice quiet place, almost a bay that comes in off the main body of the sound. It is very shallow, no more than waist deep for way on out there. Named Canadian Hole for all the Canadians that come down to vacation on the Outerbanks. This particular spot is a very favorite for the kite and wind surfers and the kayakers.
Thanks everyone for the comments!
A friend brought me these two Saddleback Caterpillars. She found one of them the hard way - these things can sting you worse than a hornet apparently. The barbs and colors keep predators away...except a parasitic wasp. The wasp finds caterpillars and stings them, laying eggs in them, the eggs hatch and make cocoons, and after a few days will completely hatch into wasps to immediately start looking for more caterpillars. What goes around comes around I guess.
Took these with my 60d and 100 macro, and speedlight with diffuser, and a couple other lights around. Didn't bother posting in the macro section cause I have no clue what I'm doing.
Really interesting critters they are! Beautiful too. C&C welcome cause I'm still learning!
Stickers all over!
Side shot...this and the one above are the alive one.
In your face! This is the front end of business!
Cocoons all over this guy...but he doesn't know it.
Those are really nice! Love the lighthouse! Great set.
WOW! Thank you for the comments Phil, CarlySue, and Geoff. I'm new at this stuff...not sure when you no longer say that. But sure having fun learning from folks like you on this site!
The outerbanks of NC is a great place to catch sunrises and sunsets. Here's a few from my recent vacation there...
Taken with canon 60d and tripod. PP in LR4.
Is this the Golden Hour? Shot over the Canadian Hole.
Also shot over the Canadian Hole.
Looks like fire!
Finally, a sunrise over the Atlantic.
Thanks ya'll. John, that snake sign was so low to the ground, it seemed like it was put there FOR the snakes. I'd pass by it one time and never paid attention to it because it was so low.
Lighthouses are neat to visit and have such a great history to them. All are so unique.
Thank kittyf. You can climb this one now since the renovation over the last few years. Not sure how long that's been since the renovation. Beautiful place for sure!
Stopped by the Bodie Island Lighthouse on the way back from Hatteras. It's located just south of Nagshead, NC. It was a cloudy, overcast day that seemed to make it difficult to shoot.
Shot with the Canon 60d and the kit 18-135 lens.
Enjoy!

Another way to say "Keep Off The Grass!"
Thanks JR1, I'll have a look at the information on those later and see what all the numbers were. Still trying to figure out that DOF stuff. I think I shot all of these at ISO 100 and thought afterwards I wished I'd shot some of these at a higher number just to see the affects.
Going to Hatteras, NC (outerbanks) this past week gave this newbie lots of opportunities to play and learn. Here's a few of my better (I think) bird shots. Used the 70-300 on my Canon 60d and LR4 to process.
C&C appreciated cause ya'll are full of great knowledge and I'm still learning!
I'll post some sunrise/sunsets and a few Bodie Island Lighthouse shots later...
Waiting for me to toss him some leftover fishbait.
A first BIF!
So whatcha looking at?
Chillin' out.
Gotta Go! Gotta Go!
Taken at the Canadian Hole on OBX.
@bruce, that's what I thought. I think this is a Cooper's Hawk which is known for chasing and catching birds in flight. But apparently bugs and worms are big on their menu. And he doesn't seem to be too bothered with me as close as 30 ft. sometimes. Red Tail hawks and some others are different story though.
Apparently he's found a good hunting spot in my back yard finding worms and bugs.
Cloudy and light rain gave me a chance up up the ISO to 3200. Still learning to sharpen and reduce noise using LR4.
C&C welcome.
Came in to root around for bugs.
I'm coming in!
He got the worm!
Rooting for more worms.
Heading out to a a new hunting ground.
Thanks for that info Linda, makes great sense. In my learning, I'm realizing there's "yet one more thing" to think about in all the photography stuff... What's hard for me is keeping track of all those things. One of these days, photo by photo, it's gonna come together!
