I believe it is a combination of two things.

1. the anonymity, of course -- it gives a person the ability to speak without much thought behind the words (well, more than usual).

2. The written word is so easily misunderstood. I have posted many things over the years that were taken the exact opposite of what I meant... and there have been times when trying to correct things just made it worse. The sound of a voice and facial expressions are so important in human communication.

As an aside: One of the first (if not THE first) books about photography I bought was Garry Winogrand's "Women are Beautiful." https://www.abebooks.com/9780374513016/Women-Beautiful-Garry-Winogrand-0374513015/plp

That book was single-handedly to blame for my interest in photography. If not for this book I, today, would be much wealthier... although probably not as happy.

Just Google his name to learn much about Street Photography.

Here is a good article on the subject of "Street" photography:

His Blog is worth a look, also.

It doesn't have a big swing arm. It's similar to a tilt head in a Gimbal Style.

Oh! I agree.

Thanks for the info. That was one of the best skies I have ever seen!

Definitely much better than the real thing.

Found this site where a guy uses a gimbal for wildlife. It doesn't have a big swing arm. I could see how one like this would be easier to use.

If you look in the accessories section you will see it. When used this way it essentially becomes a body pod. Here is the link:

I don't get it. I have looked at all these Youtube videos (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Cotton+Carrier+CCS+G3+Harness) and don't see how it compares with a monopod OR a tripod. It looks like a handy (albeit complicated... and pricy to boot) way to carry your camera is all. If you consider yourself as sturdy as either of the "pods" perhaps but I would still call it 'hand-held." What am I missing?

That's very interesting. I've never seen a gimbal with the camera mounted on the side, not the bottom. Is that unique to the Tomahawk?

TBH, I don't know. This is my only experience with a gimbal.

But, just let me say that this is a very comfortable way to "hand-hold" a large heavy lens. Since the camera/lens is balanced on the gimbal with all the weight transfered to the monopod, it is essentially weightless to the photographer. And with the single hand control of the up/down adjustment to the monopod and the ability to point in any (every) direction, it is just like actual hand-held without, of course, the "shaky" hand.

The National trust for Historic Preservation is "advocating for Route 66 to become a National Historic Trail. The current initiative to keep the route in safe hands—the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program—will sunset in 2019, but a National Historic Trail Designation will bring greater public interest and investment to the communities along the historic highway and encourage their economic revitalization. We’ll be highlighting stories from our team of roadies, who are experiencing Route 66 in real time, as well as stories about the route’s layered history, through this weekly email series."

With all of your suggestions I don't think two weeks is enough time, but since that's all we have, we'll just have to make the best of it and pick and choose our stops. I'm sure it'll still be a great trip!

Life is not that short. You don't have to do it all in one gulp. We did it in segments... and not all of them connected to the previous one. We decided quality was better than quantity and spent more time in each area.

I use a Tomahawk Gimbal with a Manfrotto 685 B Monopod when using the Tamron 150-600 lens. It is an invaluable combination when shooting fast moving objects -- BIF, for instance. The one-handed control of the monopod is an added bonus.
