I tried a lot of speedlight bouncers and softboxes, but this 12 inch "lollipop" softbox has been by far my favorite:

This, like the other bouncers and softboxes are small, so they only work to soften the light if you are within a foot or two of the subject. I usually take the speedlight off camera and hold it in my left hand to get better positioning, and to get the light source closer. If you are shooting more than a couple feet away, you'd better bounce off walls/ceilings, and if you can't to that, don't bother trying to diffuse or soften as it for the most part won't work.

Good luck.

I have the 12" and 16" from Neewer. a bit cheaper. works great when you have high ceilings or dark walls. no velcro needed. twist it to close and it fits into a very small case.

For example?

I can do grads, or better, in Lr, Ps, or Capture One. I pay attention to dynamic range (using a histogram) and, if necessary, take multiple exposures to capture the exposures I cover that range. What am I missing?

well, you can just use the cpl and forget all that extra work.

pretty silly to think shooting in manual is the only way to go. there is a time and place for it. there is also a time when it's the worst option.

the truth is there are no bad macro's. I have the Sigma 105 OS for most shots but prefer my Tamron 180mm macro for insects. might sell them both for a Sigma 150mm. had that lens a while back and I think it's the best macro lens you can get.

I have the Tamron 16-300 on my D7200. best walk around lens for me. I thought about selling it for the 18-400 but didn't want to give up the 16 vs 18mm. bought the Sigma 100-400 instead. I'll keep the 16-300 until something better comes along.

we elders have all started with manual. what's so hard about it? you have a meter. line it up in your view finder and get the correct exposer. relying on auto everything is not going to teach you much. I still use manual about 50% of the time.

I know it wouldn't make a difference in skill, but do think anyone with a pink dslr would be taking seriously?

sometimes I'm glad that I'm 68 years old. don't know if I want to be around in 40 or 50 years. well, the way the world is going, maybe no one will be around in 40 years.

Tamron or Sigma 100-400 are both within your price range. I have the Sigma and love it. I don't miss the tri pod collar as the lens is light enough to hand hold which I do most of the time anyway. the Tamron is 100.00 more and an extra 129.00 for the tri pod collar. on your dx camera you have a 150-600 and if you decide on going fx you don't have to sell the lens.

the best tripod to buy is the one your going to use. I have a Manfratto tripod at home but rarely take it out with me because it weighs a ton. I have severe back problems so I tried one of those tripods that everyone is putting out. it's from Neewer. will it be ok with a 500mm lens? no, it's not made for that, but it will hold my equipment just fine and being that it's a little less than 3 lbs. I can take it everywhere. funny how Manfratto and others are making the same tripod and selling them for twice the price. sorry, but I won't spend 500.00 on a tripod. for pros that need it, I understand, but lets get real. how many of us really need and not just want the best and most expensive toys out there.
