Don't know if this is the sort of thing you're looking for but if it helps here's what I done.

First, make a duplicate of the Background layer by pressing Command-J(PC: Ctrl-J). Press D to set your Foreground and Background colors to their defaults of black and white then convert the image to black and white using the Gradient Map adjustment (by going under the Image menu, under Adjustments, and choosing Gradient Map. Just click OK in the Gradient Map dialog).

Now, make a duplicate of this black and white layer and change the duplicate layer and change the blend mode to Divide. This will turn the entire image window white. To bring back detail, go under the Filter menu, under Blur, and choose Gaussian Blur. The Radius setting will vary on different images, but in this case, set it to 15 pixels and click OK. As you can see, the image now has a very stylish, almost illustrated look(see screen shot).

Press Command-E (PC: Ctrl-E) to merge the two duplicate layers together into one layer. Then, go under the Filter menu again, this time under Artistic, and choose Poster Edges. Again, these settings may vary with different images, but here, I set the Edge Thickness to 0, the Edge Intensity to 1, and the Posterization to 6. This will intensify the effect a bit more. Click OK.

That was it for the young girl. For the lady portrait I added a layer mask and using a soft brush, took out some of the shading on her face.
Try playing about with the settings to suit your liking. This is the way I convert a lot of my photo's to drawings, usually adding textures after this stage and experiment with blending modes.

I asked what to do about all the begging letters.

John, I have seen these animals in action. They tend to prey on older folks. You and I are not prone to fall for these emails. But seniors get scared, confused, and panic, and they don't want to be embarrassed by asking what it is. They just pay up. If more senior centers would talk about these scams, OVER and OVER again, seniors would be more aware and not fall for this crap.
And yes, I think these perpetrators should be locked up and throw the key away.
Rich...

You have to feel sorry for this fellow.

When I edited this one for posting in another section ( http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-498681-1.html ), I was surprised at the potential the shot had considering its drab beginnings. How much potential can you find in it?

JPG and TIFF below, link to DNG underneath. For some reason I managed to get better resolution for the tiff file. The DNG refused to condense down without making a downward jump in size just as it got close to being a usable size (~22MB). The TIFF is probably the best option to work from.

Hello again R.G.
Been laid up for a bit. Got sepsis and ended up having a total left hip replacement. Spent 3 month in hospital and now I have so much muscle wastage I can't get out with the old D800 so I enjoyed playing with your file.

All in Lightroom and after my general start i.e. highlights, shadows, blacks, whites etc, I done some dodging and burning to try and show some depth. A slight touch on the shadows with the split toning and sharpen to 40%.

Thanks for posting, I enjoyed trying to get back into pp after updating the programs and making sure everything is still there.

thanks again,

Alan.

If it's a driver issue, make sure you uninstall the present driver before installing the update.

I installed my updated driver without doing the uninstall and it caused me no end of problems. I ended up contacting Wacom and they advised the uninstall first - problem solved.

I found the service from the Wacom team excellent and my problem was solved within an hour. I went to their website and left them a message describing the problems I was having. They emailed me straight back with a list of things to try and a phone number to call if these did not work so we could go through it 1 on 1.

No way in this this world am I paying £400 per year for the privilege so I mass resized all the pics to 600pixels on the long side in Lightroom and I'm presently editing my posts.

Northumberland is a beautiful county but due to the typical North East of England weather, it was not often seen as a popular tourist resort.

Recent television programs such as Vera and Inspector George Gently, has brought recognition to the area and this is from where the trouble has come.
Within a few miles of each other we have Bamburgh Castle,
http://www.bamburghcastle.com/info

Holy Island (Lindisfarne), Tide Tables will have to be observed for Causeway opening times for access to the island.
http://www.lindisfarne.org.uk

Farn Islands, which has its own photography guidelines,
http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/farne-islands/features/birdwatching-and-photography

The whole area is owned by the National Trust and their guidelines are there for a reason. A lot has been said on this site about using long lenses for landscape photography.
Perhaps this is an occasion to take notice.

A warning has been issued as professional and amateur photographers try to capture the best images of the famous castle. It's one of the most photographed locations in the North East of England.

There is however an increasing issue with photographers, both professional and amateur, accessing areas they’re not supposed to be in so that they can capture the ‘perfect shot’.

One of the fields has been set aside as part of an EU backed stewardship plan which encourages wildlife on to farmland.
The field is sown in two halves - the half closest to the sea is sown with plants that provide ground cover for nesting birds and pollen rich wild flowers for bees.
The inland half is sown with plants that will feed the birds throughout the year. Birds which are attracted include reed buntings, skylarks, and grey and red partridge, as well as mammals.

The last thing that is wanted are over eager photographers creating footpaths into the field and disturbing the birds and animals and trampling the crops.

Very moving John.
We had a few tributes up here for our losses including balloon releases at South Shields Cricket Club and the Angel Of The North.
What goes on in the minds of people who can pick on our children beggars belief.
