I mean that, for shots like this, use a single focus point, and make sure that focus point contains only bird -- no part of the feeder. If your single focus point sees the feeder, it will focus on that, since it is nearest.

So is better to zoom out and get only the bird? I think I am following..

It looks as if the seeds are in focus, but the bird is a little bit out of focus. Are you using a single focus point, for shots like this, or are you using multiple focus points? If you are using multiple points, the camera will focus on the closest object in any of the points. The seeds are closer to the camera than the bird is. In fact, the bird looks as if it is as far away as it can be, while still being perched.

If you are using a single point, try getting that focus point on the bird's head, with no part of the feeder intruding. In this case, it would be better to situate the focus point on the right half of the bird's head, rather than the left half. If the head poses too much of a problem, go for the body.

OH!! Right I see that now!! The seeds are in fact closer!!! Now to figure out what single focus point is and put it into practice ...Thank you!!

Look for a good carbon fiber tripod, like Manfrotto, or Induro. A monopod is great for quick stabilization, but if you are having issues holding the camera and lens, a tripod is the only way to fly. Carbon fiber is sturdy and most importantly, light weight. Get one that extends high enough so your can shoot without raising the center column.

And, until you get comfortable, use Auto or Program. Nothin wrong with taking your time with your new glass.

Thank you for that... I notice there are kits that have both the tripod and the monopod... are they just as good? Is the ball head always bought separately?

For what you have and what you want to do, I recommend a monopod over a tripod. I would put a Manfrotto #222 grip action ballhead on top or a #234rc or - both ! You will definitely need a tripod collar - get a third party version off ebay.....not the expensive Canon one ( unless you have plenty of money)

A couple of weeks ago, I purchased a used version of the lens you're getting, and have been so happy with it.

For best results, shoot in enough light that you can keep the ISO around 200. If you aren't familiar with exposure, a book highly recommended on this site is Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure."

For example, you will want to learn how a fast shutter speed is important when capturing moving birds or animals, and how a high ISO will make your images look grainy (digital noise) and affect overall sharpness. The third element is aperture (f/stop), which controls your depth of field - how much of your image is in focus from nearest element to the furthest.

Thanks Linda for the advice .. I will check out the book... I did receive my lens but am having a hard time understanding the 3 things you mentioned... It's as though I have a mind block or something... Can't seem to put it all together.... Oh... are you using the lens hood with yours?? The 70-300 L series?

I have recently received my new lens..Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM ... Yes I copied and pasted that lol .. Its a fair weight... Am realizing I need a tripod for certain times... I want one I can travel with... not that I go to far but I will be for a week soon... Not only have I not figured out aperture etc but this thing is wild and going to take some learning...It moves lol Ok seriously... I cant seem to get it through my head the aperture... focal and ISO if that even makes any sense ..... Scared in Ontario... It isn"t clicking with me...Even after tons of videos.... should I just use Auto? Secondly... Tripod-- am looking at one but would appreciate feed back on this too... I need light weight and so that I can carry.... Is this a decent one? Am running short.... and need advice negative or positive but I want to try waves---birds...... etc too... this short trip if it happens, so need to order fast lol This is what I am looking at .. Honestly I couldnt hold this lens for a long period... It says light but it is a fair weight I wouldnt go heavier unless mounted... MeFoto BackPacker A0350Q0 Aluminium Tripod Monopod Kit It is $138.00 Canadian $$ Advice would be most welcome! Thanks!!
