Please help Audubon friends! I have 2 pics of birds I haven't been able to identify. They were both found around lake area in southeast Kansas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First pic is a Franklin’s Gull, second is an Eastern Kingbird.

Took these pics recently of some of the birds whom are now returning to the tundra regions of Northern Canada. They usually come south each fall to search for sustenance that is lacking in their home. Now that winter is coming to an end they are returning to breed but they will be back again next year.

One of the greprt pleasures of this hobby of photography is to be able to try different things with your camera. Its especially more fun digital as your ability to try different things are endless. (not like the good old times with film). With film you only had the chance to manipulate your captures in the dark room. While this too was enjoyable I find that by working in digital it has become much more pleasurable (and a helluva lot quicker also). Thats especially true not that I'm getting on in age.
This picture was taken on a very foggy/misty day with a cold westerly wind blowing of the frigid waters of Lake Superior. It may not be the greatest pic in the world but I like how it turned out. And I guess in the long run that is the main reason we do this, to make ourselves happy.
Now I do not shoot in RAW nor do I use any fancy PP program. All my shots are JPG and I use a $40 program called PhotoPad from Australia. I don't have either the patience or time anymore to sit behind a puter and work on a pic for an extended period of time. Most of my pics are as close to SOC as I can make thusly my pics usually take me less than a minute of process.
Any thoughts or critique on this is welcome as even an old timer like I can (sometimes) learn new tricks.

Jeezzz people. This is a container ship built to carry 20,000 containers each probably filled with tons of necessary items from China such as replica Mount Rushmore trinkets. It is not a bulk carrier filled with tiny bits of wood fibre for making that plush arse wiping stuff. 🙂🙃😊😇

Tell that to Nat Geo when you submit photos taken with less than the best equipment.

As far as I can remember it’s not the quality of equipment that merits the photo’s selection but rather it’s own quality. There have been many photos used by Nat Geo that have come from many different types of camera/lens combinations regardless of what the cost etc. I know for a fact that some very good pics came from some pretty unremarkable equipment. Abi is a remarkable nature photographer as anyone can see from her work. But she has at her disposal some of the best equipment available for this type of photography and the ability to use it. That’s something that a majority of us Hoggers could probably never have to worry about.😢 But regardless she’s damn good.

P.S. - perhaps you could help me in becoming a better photographer by floating me a no-interest loan so I can obtain some of that “best equipment” that you say is necessary. All I need is $22,800 to cover the camera and lens from Adorama. 😄😁😆😉😉

Sage Thrasher, according to Stokes Field guide. The spotted underside seems to ID it from the other thrashers.

Sorry, this is not a Sage. The Sage’s streaking is not as pronounced as this bird and it’s beak is far too short and straight. Also a Sage is not found anywhere near San Antonia, it’s range in Texas is only in the very far west section, such as Big Bend NP. The Sage is primarily a desert bird, the main reason for its name.
Over the past few decades I’ve had the fortunate pleasure of photographing 7 of the 8 types of Thrashers in the USA so I know these birds quite well. The only one I’m missing is California Thrasher as I haven’t gotten far enough west.
For all youse bird photographers out there I highly recommend that if you have a mobile unit (cellphone, pad, etc) to download the app MERLIN which is excellent at IDing birds from photographs. Sadly this program is not available for desktop units. For example if you put the picture posted by John along with with his date and location into Merlin you’ll find that this bird is a Long-billed Thrasher.

Long-billed Thrasher

Agree strongly with Jeff, this is a Long-billed Thrasher. They are almost identical to the Brown but the size and shape if it’s bill clearly shows it as a Long-billed. Also the colour of its eyes also indicate it as such. Normally the Brown’s eyes are more yellow while the Long-billed are a remarkable orange. Lastly is its location. San Antonio is not where you would normally see a Brown. A Brown in this area would be considered Rare while the Long-billed would not. By the way, great capture of a very beautiful bird.

All your camera equipment has been destroyed in a flood and your insurance doesn't cover "acts of God".
Casper the Friendly Ghost offers you two options:

1. A camera of your choice, not to exceed $7,000 and one lens not to exceed $2500
or;
2. A camera of your choice, not to exceed $2500 and one lens not to exceed $7000.

No dodging around here, Casper is only offering two choices

I can only match your posting on the first combo of $9500 for camera and lens (just barely). I am a Canon guy so I probably be only looking in that direction. My dream would of course be mirrorless. Below would be my dream buys😜. I am including the taxes in my CD prices (13%)

Option 1 - Canon R5 body @ $6100 plus Canon 100-400 @ $3400 for total $9500
Option 2 - Canon R6 body @ $3900 plus Canon 300 2.8 @ $9050 plus 1.4 TC @ $650 for total $13600

Now before any of uz out there get excited the above prices are what I would pay for all new equipment here in my home Canada. For those south of the 49th the prices (without taxes) would be from Adorama

Option 1 - $6300 USD
Option 2 - $9030 USD

So you can see a bit of what we have to put up with in regards to prices up here in the Great White North 🥶

Sadly l probably can just dream about outfits like these as at my age of 78 on a pension income that is all they will ever be, a dream. But what the hell would this world be if we couldn’t at least do that, right???

All youse out there stay safe and keep a-posting.

Yes, tis a Purple Finch (female). The female House Finch is almost identical except the Purple has a well marked whitish line above its eye (eyebrow). This marking is missing for the most part on the House.

Thank you very much Ron! I thought I had the Palm Warbler, so thank you for that. I've been looking but couldn't ID the Yellow Rumped so thank you very much for that one too! Sorry to hear of the mobility issues. I'm beginning to experience some of that too.
Before I came down here to Florida I was chasing the smaller birds too but started concentrating on the bigger wetland birds for obvious reasons. I will start working on smaller birds more and will post what I find for you. I'm glad you are enjoying my photos, I am really enjoying the chase! ps I got a Blue Grey Gnatcatcher a few weeks ago that I posted, really nice photo IMHO if you want to do a search for him. First I have ever seen.
Thank you very much Ron! I thought I had the Palm ... (show quote)

Your quite welcome CPO. Sometimes with the Yellow-rumps when it’s off breeding season they do not readily show their distinctive yellow tail light (we call them “Butter-bums” here up North). That’s especially true of the females. The split eyering along with its wing pattern helps to ID this species.
As for my mobility even though it’s decreasing every year a bit more that is not my main problem. The real problem is that they won’t let me (or any of my citizen friends ) into your country by car. I’m from North of the border (Canada) and the border has been closed to basically all of us from entering the U.S.A and has been for almost a full year. And as of today there appears that it will be staying that way for quite awhile. So instead of chasing Painted Buntings in Corkscrew Swamp I’m shooting Common Redpolls in a mini-blizzard! But I’m keeping my fingers crossed that next winter will be better and I can join you on the “Drive”.
Stay safe and catch a few more of the little ones.
