I recently began acquiring vintage M-42 screw mount lenses of various brands to play with on my Fuji X-T1. I presently have four. I'm finding it to be a lot of fun.

I have two Pentax cameras - a 'Super Program' that I purchased in 1983, and a more recent K-30. They share lenses, including a 'Mir' and several 'Super Takumar' M42-mount lenses. Some times I forget which lenses are old ..... until they don't AF on the K-30.

Seeing as I am a hobbyist and no one is paying me to risk destroying one of my cameras, I don't feel any shot I might take is worth putting a camera through a deluge. That is not to say I have not gotten some sprinkling on a camera ever. I can think of three times I've gotten one of my DSLRs slightly wet. That is two of my four DSLR cameras anyway. My Pentax K-100D is converted to full-time Infrared use so I would not even have that camera with me on a cloudy day. My Pentax K-20D is definitely water resistant as you can see o-rings, grommets, and locking "doors" on it, and the advertising stressed its weather or environmental resistance. That was not my main rationale for buying it though. I have had no problems with water, i.e., light rain getting into my main camera, a Pentax K-5, but I don't believe it is as well sealed as the older K-20D because it has gotten dust inside and had to be professionally disassembled and cleaned. The poor thing even had gotten food on it and some of that over time may have worked its way inside. My newest camera is a used Pentax K-3, but I have no idea about its weather proofing as I have not had it long and I have not had it out in the elements yet (dust, sand, mist, rain).

I would not expect my Omega 4x5" View Camera to do well in rain nor my 4x5" wooden folding Field Camera. I do also have several film SLRs and other cameras (film & digital) but I keep them dry. Oh, I used to own a Pentax medium format Pentax 6x7. I believe that was well sealed. I may have gotten a bit of water on that. All in all I think it is best to keep electronics like digital cameras dry and not stored in humid locations.

I also noticed the testers in the study said they did not have a Pentax, Panasonic, or Fuji-Film camera available for testing. Nice they tested a Nikon D850 as it is new. But they should have also tested a Nikon D5 for comparison. I'd wonder, did Nikon F2, F3, or F4 cameras ever leak?

Several years ago, a "cloud burst" began while my wife and I were on a 'birding' walk. If I had still been using my Canon Rebel, I would have quickly stuffed it into my camera bag. This was a year after I had purchased my Pentax K-30, though, so I just took pictures as she tried to figure out how to use her new rain 'slicker'. I wasn't looking for water, but I wasn't going to allow it to deter me, either.

Don’t know anything about that one with all the dials on top but how in the heck could that even be made water resistant??

My bottom-tier Pentax has lots of dials on top, and it does just fine in wet weather.

When I bought my lenses for my 35mm cameras each lens has its own purpose and when mounting on a DX camera it no longer work for the same purpose.

Apparently you operate differently than I do. I decide what perspective I want, what framing I want of that perspective, and then I zoom my lens to get that framing at that perspective; that is the only "job" each lens has for me {I don't even look at the focal length most of the time}.

In my humble opinion, starting the DSLR at the crop size was a huge mistake. Everyone was used to the 35mm SLR. Why make a digital version with a smaller sensor? Yes, the price was lower, but now manufacturers have the double expense of researching and manufacturing two different systems. When I bought my first DSLR, a D90, I didn't know there was any such thing as a crop sensor. Now we have two systems that are not totally compatible and millions of words written about advantages, disadvantages, and compatibility.

I disagree!

My last film camera was a Canon EOS Elan which cost me $700. If they had produced only DSLRs with sensors of that size, I might still be using that now-23-year-old camera, because I have never trusted used cars or cameras, and there has never been a new "FF" camera in that price range.

People keep chatting about Nikon concerns, but nothing else seems to be going on. Some pages are partly full, and some are empty, lacking even navigation links.

Are we not understanding what this means? I know I am confused. Are the aliens taking over? Are the Chinese or Koreans spamming us? Does anyone know the purpose? Or is a troll just messing with us?

I'm guessing this is related to the problem of funky pages here

There's something wrong, at least with the Main Photograph Discussion forum. There seems to be an unusually short batch of subjects, and when I go to the nexst page, it tells me there are no subjects in that page. Have we been hacked by someone meaning harm to UHH?

This topic was raised earlier here, but I cannot find the post now. I hope Admin figures this out fast, because there is little point reading or posting here before this problem is fixed. I'm guessing this is related to the other problem reported here

I have a 35mm and 50mm for my D5500 and although the 35mm has the focal length of the "nifty fifty" in FX mode, I still prefer the 50mm.

No, its focal length is 35mm. Because of the sensor, and only because of the sensor, you end with images that could have been taken with a 50mm lens on a FX or 35mm camera. The lens is labeled based on its characteristics, not based on characteristics of sensor it will be used with.

My wife and I are heading to Maine this summer to visit relatives and (in my case) doing a fair amount of photography. This is our first trip there -  about  2 weeks total time. Likely flying into Boston, spending a day or so then heading north along the coast. We'll be spending a few days around Portsmouth guided by our cousins. Then heading north to Acadia NP. Other possible destinations would be Moosehead Lake, then circling back south perhaps through Vermont.

We mainly enjoy outdoors pursuits. I enjoy landscape and wildlife photography equally. Will have my D500 with some long lenses and either my D800 or (hopefully) a new D850.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for special places to photograph along the coast, quaint fishing villages, mountain vistas. I'd classify us as "mild" hikers. We don't do 1000 ft. elevation gain hikes these days. Top wildlife catches would be loons, moose, bear and puffins. I checked and the tours that actually land on the puffin nesting islands are booked except for the boats which simply circle the islands.

Thank you for any help you might have.

Greg

As I mentioned in my initial post, I'm comparing SLRs with DSLRs.

Which 'SLR' are you comparing to? My Pentax "Super Program" was very svelte; the Pentax "K-1000", in production at the same time, was 'clunkier' {as were Practika cameras}. Shortly later, Canon hired an industrial designer to design the body of the T-90, and we've been stuck with that design ever since.

Haha. We got off the ferry and were heading to Thousand Islands (via 81).
I wonder how many people pass it and say WOW and make a U-turn??

The OP needs to realize that many of these sights are "off I-81", but are separate destinations of/by themselves, and are worth at least a day each. When we lived in western Mass., we made separate trips to Lake Placid / Lake Saranac, Saratoga, Thousand Islands, and Fort Ticonderoga.
