My hobby is photography and I live in Costa Rica. My hobby allows me to volunteer at many events were lots of disadvantaged younger people attend. I take pictures, have this printed and give the prints to these people. It makes them happy, and me possible happier.
There is one particular school down in one of the many valleys where there is a school with only 30 students, from kindergarten to grade eight. Uniforms are passed on to younger siblings, schoolbooks are a prized possession. Three teachers with hearts of gold!
I have been taking portraits of these kids in the past years and go again later this week. I have been using a Sony 50mm F/2.8 Macro and I found the results pretty good. However, I often read about photographers using a longer lens for portraits, which brings me to the question what other lens could I possible use. I have in my arsenal a.o. a Sony 70-300G SSM f4.5-5.6 and a Sony 24-70 mm F2.8 ZA SSM Carl Zeiss. I mount these on a Sony A99ii. Any advice on any of these 3 lenses? Thank you.

My favorite focal range for portraits is 100-200 mm. Choice varies from person to person and environment.

I have been a member for about a year now but did not know you got priority on newly released items. I have been waiting for months for the new 85mm S lens from B&H. I guess I should have ordered it direct from Nikon and expedited. Now I am going on a trip without it. Argh!

Do not ask Nikon. Nikon Professional Services has it's own contact number. Call them and ask about the lens. I did that with the 500 5.6, since I had one on order from B&H, NPS sent the lens to B&H and then B&H sent it to me.

2 Bills, or 2 Grand. I changed and have an a7III. Maybe the IQ is not exactly as good as a Nikon d850, with more pixels, but it has other advantages. I only have 2 lenses that I carry and a RX100 VII as a sidekick. So my advantage is much lower cost for the same effect in photos I took with Nikon gear. Good luck with your testing and I await your results.

Also looking at the a7IV. 61 mg but a cropped option of 29 mg. So a 600 f4 could become a field of view at 900 mm at f4 at 29 mp. Now that will make you stand up and notice.

Bill....You bring up a subject that brings up a real question for me. I have a Nikon 70-200mm lens that obviously needs fine tuning. As much as I paid for it I haven't used it much because of that fact. You're saying if I have it fine tuned that will not fine tune it for all distances. So how will that help me? Does it just mean it's a defective lens?

You really need a professional look at you camera and lens. Nikon will do that for you.you can send it in to them, call them ahead of time. I have never had a 70-200 that was not tack sharp. And I have owned most versions of that lens.

Not sure what you mean when you say “...it is not all that hard” to qualify. My understanding is that you have to derive all of your income from photography or photography related business and of course have a certain amount invested in Nikon gear. I don’t see how a hobbyist or even a part time working photog can qualify.

The qualifications are listed on line. You should look it up and decide.

Hello,

Thinking of getting a Sony RX100 VI or VII.

Has anyone had experience making 16 X 20 prints with a good Image Quality from this camera?

Many thanks.

Yes, I have the RX100 II and make 20X30 prints.

Looking to learn more about NPS service and members’ past experience with this organization both positive and negative. Please share...

Got my 500 5.6 from them. Also, I get priority on repairs and a discount on all work done. Plus I get first in line for new products. You must qualify but it is not all that hard.

If I remember correctly, you have said ALL your lenses are "perfect" and NEVER needed fine tuning anyway !

Yes, I did say that. All of my Nikon lenses NEVER needed fine tuning. And with Sony, the same will be true. Isn't life grand.

Have you used the Sony glass your gonna purchase yet? If not, rent first. Just a thought. I would sign off with have fun but it sound like you are already.

Yes, that is good advice. But at this moment all Sony 200-600 lenses are out of stock. That is the lens I am going to start with anyway. I have just enough to get the A9 and that lens. I am only using the A9 for wildlife photography,so I will only be using long lenses. The 100-400 is great but not long enough with the FF A9.
I have talked to a Sony rep.and of course he talked the 200-600 up. It has the same guts as the newer 400 2.8 and 600 f4. Sony has done a masterful job redesigning the focusing rails on the inside of those three lenses. And the weight savings is very significant. The 200-600 is a little over a pound lighter than my current 200-500 Nikon.
One of the big reasons I am considering a switch is because of the optic weight. The Sony 400 2.8 and 600 4 are both within my hand holding limits. I love shooting the big boys and I haven't been able to with the weight of the Nikon big's.
I shoot almost exclusively in Florida wetlands where using a mono pod or tripod actually degrades your chances of getting the "SHOT". So weight is very important to me.
Thanks again for your incite. And I will hopefully start posting comparisons in January if my heath allows. Right now every thing is good but at 70 you take it a day at a time.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks for the heads up on that info. But, I would have to sell all my Nikon Gear, before I would even attempt to do that. And, it still would be far away from my budget. You did well on the price paid on the D5, you acquired recently. A true pro Sports camera.

Yeah, I had a D5 last winter in Florida and liked using it early in the morning. But alas, I came North and sold it.
Missing it I got another. But I am very picky about buying used equipment. The second D5 I got had a 0 shutter count but only came as body only with battery, no charger. But I couldn't pass on it so I got the charger from B&H and to my surprise the charger came with an adapter for my Nikon D3s battery. Will wonders never stop.
Yes, the D5 is a sports camera but I use it for wildlife. It has served me well as just before coming North I ran across, or more correctly, a pair of Sand Hill Cranes and Colt almost ran into me in the parking lot of Loxahatchee National Reserve in Boynton Beach. They walked through the parking lot and I had the 70-200 2.8 on the D5. You had to watch your distance because the Cranes have feet that they will use on you if you get too close. The adult male saw his reflection in our black car and started to peck at it, fortunately it left no marks. I followed the colt in an effort to get it receiving grubs from the parents, to my delight the adult female grabbed a dragon fly as as she gave it to the colt I opened up with the D5 and got that once in a while shot. It was very early in the morning and I was lucky to have the speed king in my hands.
Yes, it will be an interesting winter using both the Sony A9 and my Nikon's. Let the games commence.

Do you think the A9II may have more under the hood that hasn't been implemented yet? Firmware seems to be doing a lot more these days that in the past would have required a new camera body.

It is interesting that most upgraded camera's are basically the same body with improved software, sensor and firmware only. Really keeps production costs down.

Why would anyone spend $4,500 on this camera when, for example, they could buy a new Fuji X-T3 MILC for $1,399?

Is this Sony Camera REALLY that much better? I realize many people are married to their brand of equipment, but sometimes I just have to scratch my head when I see disparities like this.

OK, please enlighten me. Please try to minimize the attacks. I am really just trying to understand.

For me, I bought a used mint A9 with vertical grip for 2 bills.
One of the advantages of this camera is 20 fps and can be done in silent mode, which, if you shoot wildlife, is a real advantage over all the others.

No argument. The Fuji X-T3 sells for just south of $1500.00 and it appears not everyone is married to that brand.

Bought it in the hope of good quality. Camera assembled in china. lens in the philippines. Im very upset because in mode LIVE VIEW on a white background are visible not works pixels in the amount of more than 1000. pixels are white and black , they can be seen when zooming in through the rear functional wheel. this problem is visible on a light background , dead pixels are arranged chaotically. does not depend on the camera settings, can be seen in auto mode or iso320-400, ss1/30. this is not a screen or viewfinder . only matrix! this is noticeable on some serial number cameras with 8DQxxxxx. this problem is not on every camera. I met this defect in three new cameras out of five. let me know if you have such a camera. Front and rear wheels are poorly controlled with your fingers. as a result, the wheel falls into the button and it works, a weak spring is installed. Set up quickly fails..
