All else being equal, the main advantage of having a higher megapixel count is that you can have A bigger enlargement or crop in closer in your photos with less image degradation.

Isn't it a pity that all else is NEVER equal? Life would be so much easier if it was.

I did not see a budget mentioned. Is there one?

The other place to check is any sporting goods or running store. Just about everyone makes them now.

If you are thinking a prime, Sigma makes a 70mm 2.8 @ $499.00 (= around 112 mm) that might do well. Or better yet the EF 85 1.8 @ 419.00 a very well respected lens that would give you an equivalent around 135mm. Still a little long, but if she has the space, very doable.

I would say get them into a composition you like then adjust your apeture (and perhaps your distance since you are using a 100mm) to give you sufficient DOF. Obviously you also need to adjust your shutter speed and ISO for good exposure.

In the hands of someone who does not know what they are doing (OR TALKING ABOUT) shifting conditions matter.

Period.

I expect you to ignore that. You are just that type.

Conversing with you has also become pointless and I will ignore your comments in the future.

"Intuitive" and "user friendly" really mean you already know how to use it.

Ok. Slowly.

So you can follow it.

At no time did I say not to use objective measures.

EVER.

AT NO TIME.

What I did say was you need to take the environment in to consideration. It is with this you seem to have an issue. So if anyone is disregarding information, it is you.

Different lenses behave differently. I know, tough concept but one that is very important in photography.

The OP initially asked only about sharpness, however later elaborated on the subjects being shot. Primarily asking about two very different environments as well as why a flash can help get a sharper shot.

For sure I will use flash. What does that have to do with the sharpness of the lens? Ed

I was addressing those issues. And those issues are variable depending on the setting and the subject.

Please, in the future, try to fully read the thread before making unwarranted, personal attacks. Or you may find yourself at the other end of more accurate name calling.

The pics I'm most critical of are when I'm shooting, for example, kids soccer. Practically all of this is done at max tele, with the camera on auto everything, but set for "sports"

If you are shooting from the sideline, focusing can be tough zoomed all the way out. What AF point are you using? Center point? Have you tried standing slightly further away with a slightly smaller aperture (to increase DOF) and using manual focus? Futbol has a lot of change of direction more so than any other sport I can thing of, so maintaining AF can be very difficult. If you are just tracking one player (not all the action), you might try maintaining manual focus on that child. And zoom out a little bit so you can keep track of the action through the view finder.

Also what you like to shoot would help. Landscapes? Portraits? Macro?

What is your budget? Sigma's new lenses are very good and frequently have a very good cost/performance. But a budget would help to get better answers

KEH camera will repair any lens for $195. That includes shipping back to you. Worth a thought.

There you go. Do you want to pay $195 for a repaired $200 lens? Didn't think so.

BUY MORE STUFF!!!!!!!

This is dependant on the lens you are using and your distance from the subject. Your best bet is to get a depth of field(DOF) app for your phone or computer and enter your lens length and your distance from the subject. It will give you the depth of field. Make sure your subject is within that range. Good luck.

Enter your camera and lens combination and the calculator will tell you your EXACT DOF at any aperture, that way you will know ahead of time if they will be in focus or not. Also, use the DOF Preview button on your camera, outdoors in good light it actually works quite well to preview the DOF.

They pretty much covered it

Duh, yeah. Tell us something that we don't know. The inquiry was about lens sharpness.

And double DUH, lens sharpness is partially dependant on environment in which it is used. Only people who blindly follow lab only tests (like DxO) believe otherwise. If you are trying to compare the sharpness of lenses, the conditions of use are vitally important. You ignore that at your own risk.

DUH
