I am well aware of the arguments regarding UV/clear filters to protect a lens. I don't want to jinx myself, but I have been involved with photography for over 60 years and have never had a cracked, scratched, or other form of damaged from of a lens. So you can understand that I am biased by the fact that even the most expensive filters, and who says that they are necessarily better than the least expensive ones, are placing another piece of glass in front of the lens that I prefer to use to take a photo. I checked with my personal property insurance carrier and they told me that damage from dropping a lens, etc., will be covered by them as well.

I am going on a safari in February and was told, by many, that it is very dusty and to carry 2 camera bodies so I don't need to change lenses. I bought a second body. Now I was told to wrap the camera and lens in a scarf when not shooting, so I got a bit worried about sand, dust, etc., sand blasting the front of the lens.

I started listening to u-tubes about the discussion of filters and various people's discussions about quality and price. When looking for a UV/clear glass filter I noticed that Tiffen, which was really a leader in filter manufacturing in the 1960s, still seems to have filters for sale, at this time. I found some of my old Tiffen filters from the 1960s and they look just great. They new Tiffen filters are far less expensive then other manufacturers' brands. I was surprised to find that they actually claim they make their filters in the USA. I took the chance and ordered one for my lower and one for my upper zoom lenses. I have polaroid filters for other lenses that I will be taking as well, so all of my lenses should be protected.

I just wondered if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with their filters?

Filters, used correctly, work well. I have found Tiffen filters work as well as many brands that cost much more.

Monochrome will capture the soul of an image if the colors aren't interesting , still color can produce interesting photos but B&W goes all the way to the soul + B&W can be more forgiving . It has been said when you shoot in color it only gets to the surface . So everybody commit on this subject .

Hurrah for color.

As you could tell by the topic I have obsolete equipment that I use and need advice on. My house burned down last July and I lost half my collection. I'm hoping there are others here that can help with some weird questions I have about some really old stuff that still works. Your news letter is so interesting and I enjoy trying some of the tricks with different cameras. I may have some stuff for sale and would like to deal with people that understand what they are looking at. Too much information? Thanks for including me.

Welcome to UHH.
As for me, I have sold and no longer use any film camera's. I really like being able to edit digital images away from a dangerous chemical filled darkroom of my film days.

I just bought a used Kowa Super 66 (6x6 120 film camera) with a finder/exposure meter. I have not run a test roll of film yet but hope to do so soon. Any tips & tricks from Ugly Hedgehog Super 66 users?

I used to use a Kowa for weddings, but the mirror slap was so loud many folks blinked in my images. When I switched to a Hasselblad it solved that problem.
IMHO, the Kowa takes a very sharp image.
PS. If you do not have a prism top, you will have to get used to the reversed image when you move the camera from right to left or left to right.

I own mostly Nikon glass but I have ONE Sigma: 120-400mm 4.5-6.5 OS. AF quick working. Sent it to C.R.I.S - chandler AZ (authorized Sigma repair facility). $99 plus $28 for shipping (I live in HI). They had it one week and now it works like new. The Tech that fixed my lens told me they see just as many Nikons as Sigmas AND Nikons are often more expensive to repair.

Interesting side. I have owned over 40 AF Nikon lenses that have never needed servicing. Others who own Sigma's, on the other hand , have a much higher failure rate. Interesting isn't it. Yes indeed.

Not so sure that is the case, filters have been around for a long time and I have rectangular hoods that work quite well with filters.

Yes I know dslr's and video cameras can use both round or rectangular lens shades but why are round type basically found on DSLR and rectangular basically found on video cameras?

Leica has used rectangular lens shades for years.

Not totally correct. Many of the newer Nikon lenses have them, Nikon 18-80 2.8-4 for example.

I used to use an old antique two sided latter and posed a group all over it in different positions.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Went to the UHH Post You listed, Beautiful Picture of a Blue Jay, but no dialogue on teleconverters, so I went to your 500 Pix Page and all Your Photographs are Outstanding which speaks for itself,,,I agree a teleconverter cuts down on incoming light and the extra glass can cause less sharpness, and getting close, using bird feeders, or a blind or a tape recording of bird songs to get closer is better than using a teleconverter, still they come in handy in a pinch...and some of our Photographers on this forum have no problem with teleconverters but are generally using them on a very expensive fast aperture telephoto lens with a high resolution camera...

Your quote is dangerous, I quote you here, "or a tape recording of bird songs to get closer is better than using a teleconverter".
Using bird songs to bring in birds in very, very, wrong. I hope NO one here is using this method. It is not something ANYONE should do. It ends up messing up the bird, they are drawn in on a call that is used that most birds use for mating, the bird shows up, sees no mate, and leaves. If this is done repeatedly, it will discourage mating among birds. Please do not do this, and if anyone here is doing this, PLEASE, PLEASE, STOP!!!!!!!!!!

Sometime ago someone posed the question as to whether a refurbished camera had the count set back to zero or not. I bought my refurbished Nikon D5600 from Adorama with no info as to the shutter count. I just ran across a shutter count program that was simple to use and checked my camera's shutter count which was 311, meaning that this camera was either set back during refurbishing or had been refurbished at the factory before it was ever sent out for sale. This latter possibility was included in a comment on one of the NikonUSA website sections. By the way, the shutter count program I found and used is
"Myshuttercount.com". This site not only gave the count but it listed all of the pertinent info concerning my camera. I tried a shot from my point and shoot Canon but it didn't work. I don't know if the same type of data is attached to images from a point and shoot camera as is done with Nikon images but that could be the reason that the experiment was not successful.

Changing the subject, is there a UHH recommended pixel dimension/size for DSLR pictures attached to a post on UHH?

Your quote, " this camera was either set back during refurbishing or had been refurbished at the factory before it was ever sent out for sale." is a little wrong.
Most refurbished camera's are actually returned camera's because the person simply did not like it, in other words, nothing was wrong with the camera and it is like new, enjoy.

I need some advice. I pulled the GAS trigger today on a Nikon FF camera to replace my D7500. I'm not a pro. I shoot landscape, still life, and things that don't talk back. I have a full assortment of crop sensor lens, but no FF lens other than a 50mm/1.8. I bought a 24-85 f2.8-f4 Macro to go with the camera. If you had a limited budget, what lens would you get beyond the two I'll have? I enjoy milky way shots, light painting, macro stuff, flowers, waterfalls, and "artsey" stuff. Any suggestions are welcome. FWIW, I've have done two weddings (don't care for the pressure) and I've done a couple of office parties (free drinks). I don't mind manual focus lenses, used lenses, or refurbs if I can return if they've seen their useful life. Thanks for the help. I really do appreciate all the comments even they are a little painful.
