Back at n the day gentlemen an upgrade in “sensor” resolution was new film$3-$8.00, your Nikon FM was just as good a film holder as a new F3, they were both nearly the same size, you weren’t going to detect significant difference in the photos unless a different film was used. It’s all been turned on its head.
My first DSLR was the Fuji S pro 1, I believe it did 6.5 megapixels took wonderful pictures, I bought it used, $700? Don’t remember, the box had a sticker that said $4,995. Thank god someone had GAS in the day, someone spent $5k on a camera, that allowed the camera store and Fuji to make a profit for further model up grades, inthink I spent $800 on my Pro S2, someone had paid $3k when it was new. It’s been that way all along, my newest camera is my D700, I was fine, through a friend he told me about his buddy that was selling an D850, well those are so far out of my league, 140,000/200,000 on the shutter count, a lot, but no signs of duress, clean as new, $1,000.00, I’ve never owned a fully contemporary camera in my adult life, close, here’s where HAS comes into place; I practically lived on the desire to upgrade always checking sites, I was looking at a D810 for $800 and was going to go that route, but this D850 was win-win baby. Now my GAS has moved, I’ve got lenses but it’s those premium AF-D, and AI lenses, they’re cheap and fun to collect. And the gas goes on…

JFC**pe understands it, if improvements, real or perceived, for upgrades worthy of moving up, thus acquisition.
The digital revolution in cameras could not have happened without GAS.

I get bad GAS, I’m old enough to have:

“taken every picture”,
these cold cloudy daze leave little of beauty to be captured
Perhaps a __________would spin these maudlin daze anew…
Yet my new precious_________leaves me frustrated.
Perhaps I try another

“My pictures suck”
Bland and unstructured, if you can’t make it good make it red
If you can’t make it red make it big
My New camera will make my pictures better, lost horizons now colored over bright

No need to argue, I know my shit on this subject, the DF has a flip away “ai” coupling lever that can be folded up and away. For many that’s only one of the Df’s many charms. The build and quality is a mash-up of D4, D800 and D610. I put the DF in the category of “Gift Camera”, expensive, gorgeous, and supremely functional. Much like the Leica cameras, sure I’d love one, but unless someone gifts me one I’m stuck.

I’ve was tempted to buy the one I fondeled, cuz she is a fondler, it’s also available in the rarer Black and Gold color way, cuz again it’s a gift camera. Like I said it is a beautiful and useful gift camera, you either buy one for yourself or you are graced with one after perhaps a successful business transaction, something more prevalent in the mid and far east.
I seriously considered the one they had at my local store $1,299.00; but the a buddy of mine hooked me up with a guy trying to sell a mint (well used and used well) D850, for $1,000. I haven’t had a first line, top of the heap camera since 1982, so it is a huge deal to me, now I can put a D700 out to pasture.

Actually and officially only one digital camera can utilize all the lenses including the “Non-AI”, and she is the …DF, the pro-and enthusiast cameras can use the screw drive auto focus gem o

"The EM5 (mine is the mkii) seems the unbeatable choice for great portability, especially as the lenses are so small."

Mine too!, I haven't purchased big glass cuz I keep the gear as small as i can, 2 EM5's and a p5, I have had trouble with them failing though, never had a problem with a Nikon, ever.

If you enjoy that, you would love a Nikon D2Xs.

I thoroughly enjoy my DX2 with the 25-50, That's as old as I go but it is a unique camera and a unique lens. Of course it doesn't matter but I still use my D300S with my 80-400 AF-D, and I love my D850 but... My analogy is thus, I would rather own and drive an Alfa Romeo 1750 GTA than a new Ferrari, just more fun to drive.
If I were into film I would have kept my Rolleiflex 2.8F and my Zeiss Ikons.

Ok one comment two questions: I use(d) a brace of D700’s one with 24-120 one with 18-35, and my D300s goes with the 80-400.
I just two days ago got the D850…wow! Now I’ll need the D500 to maintain the same familial layout and battery packs. But I still love my D700’s and D300S. Now lastly, been thinking about that Zfc, how do you like it? I love the form factor but have MFT e-m5’s for travel, unless I can maybe make the ZFc work

Wow! That Voigtlander lens looks suspiciously like my Meike 35mm F/1.4!

No it doesn"t, your lens is deeper obviously to incorporate additional lens elements to allow a 35mm focal legnth to clear the minimum flange distance

Are you using the term "pancake" lens to mean any short FL prime lens? That is incorrect. Pancake lenses are compact prime lenses usually around 40mm for a Film or FF digital "35mm Camera". I have no problem with you asking the question because I have for a few decades wondered why they are popular and over priced for what they are. They usually are pricier than a 50mm "Normal" lens, yet slower at f/2.8 and not f/1.4. I have actually thought of buying one (they are cute and light weight) but they cost too much for the little use I would get, when I already have standard 28mm, 35mm, 50mm prime lenses.
Are you using the term "pancake" lens to... (show quote)

Almost the only correct answer, close but I get the cigar. "Pancake" lenses are simply 4 element Tessar formula short normal lenses generally 35-50 mm (Flange offset determines utilization of tessar design) Planar lenses incorporate a fith element which corrects and allows for a faster lens. Tessar lenes are usually 2.8-5.6.

Now wide angle lenses on DSLR/slr are retrofocus where the image circle is actually generated like a telephoto due to flange distance. a small wide angle such as the Nikkor 20 isn't a tessar design, and is small by virtue of its unique optical formula and lack of speed, you can call small lenses like this a pancake but the true pancake is a normal focal legnth.

Two good examples are the Voightlander 40mm and Nikkor 40mm GN and that new one. the Nikkor 50mm f 1.8 almost qualifies.

The supposed benefit percieved today is increased contrast due to the use of only 4 glass surfaces, back when coatings weren't so sophisticated the reduction of lens elements would provide improvements in contrast and flare prevention.
