I spent a lovely Christmas break with my son and family and their dog Khaleesi. Christmas Day was her first birthday. Hard to believe she is really still a puppy. She's a cross between a Cane Corso and a Dogue de Bordeaux.

Has anyone else noticed a significant drop in participation on this forum since they stopped the Daily Digest? I wish they would bring it back.

I don't really like the new way we receive entries but I guess the change made sense to the administrator. Who is the administrator - I don't know.

I've been told that I should watermark my photos to protect from copiers. I'm considering selling some of my works at some photo shows, but have already shared many of my works without protections. I've heard that there are some watermarks that only show up when being printed. This is what I'd prefer. Any thoughts?

No point in watermarking. They are easily removed by those who want to steal your images.

We aren’t at all sure what the actual birth date is for our kitty Julius, we can only guess. At the time of the first picture his rescue mom Katy said she thought he was about 8 months old. That was July of 2018. So I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt and from now on I will celebrate his birthday throughout the month of December.

What a beautiful boy!

I had it last year. I liked the program but they add charges without your knowledge and it never costs what it says it does. When you buy it and give them your information, they tell you certain things won't work unless you buy so & so to go with it, then they try to insist on you buying even more. What was supposed to be on sale for $39 wound up as $200.

Interesting - they never do that to me!

My regret is that between UPS & FedEx, & Amazon, I didn’t invest in a cardboard company.

What irks me about all of them is that they refuse to ring the doorbell when making a delivery. This morning I picked up a soaking wet box on the stoop where they dumped it. Last week I caught an Amazon delivery man walking away from the door and asked him why he couldn't ring. He said, "Well, I took a photo of the package I left showing that it was delivered". I replied, "And who will be to blame if a thief walks by and picks it up before I find it?" He didn't have an answer to that!

Taken at Bonneyville Mill, outside of Middlebury, IN, on a weekend with many Amish relaxing.
They do not like to get their picture taken, so this was a very opportune shot:
I had just pulled up and gotten out of my car when this mom walked by with her brood.
I hurried and snapped a shot, and - OMG!!! - it was perfect

Returned a month ago from 3 weeks touring in Uganda. Photographed 222 species, and saw another 100+ that got away. Here are a few.

A neighbor had their whole family in for Thanksgiving and wanted me to take their photos, different sets of people, etc. I told her I don't do people, but they insisted.

After some pp, I think the photos came out pretty good and so do they. I then had some 4x6 photos printed at CVS and had them pick out what they wanted.

Well, they do not want the glossy finish. So I went to MPIX which I've seen mentioned here a number of times. I had a chat session and wanted to find out about their finish. This is what they said, '...we have the standard semi gloss that would have a sheen but it is not glossy, or we have a deep matte giclee that would have no sheen at all..."

In your opinion, will MPIX's standard finish (semi gloss) be what my neighbor wants?

As an aside, the one photo of the whole family (of course that one) I screwed up and didn't leave enough space on the sides for an 8x10 that they want, but I can do an 8x12.

The standard finish is probably what some would call lustre. I have always printed portraits on true matte finish paper. I think it always looks better than gloss or lustre.

I was on a boat tour in the Kenai Fjords National Park just taking in all the sights and the captain comes on the speaker saying she, yes she, just spotted a black bear swimming way out in front of our boat. She said it was rather unusual and not something she sees every day. Now, how true is that? I often wondered just how rare some of our sightings really were as I think if they make it sound like our boat trip was the best of the year the tips might be bigger.... but I must say I was surprised to see this bear even thinking of such a long swim. He was headed from one land mass to another that was well over a mile away. I'm bad a distance, but I'm guessing it was several miles away. Anyway, here is the long distance swimmer, or not.

I don't know much about the black bears but I do know that polar bears can swim great distances.

Without a doubt, the hardest subject I've ever tried to photograph...Give me birds in flight any day..
I took about 40 shots of these guys at sunset last night and these are the best I could do. The wind didn't help but these guys are so fast and zippy they sit still for less than a second.
What I like about them is how they fly up into your face and hover there to check you out before going back to the flowers..
I added two shots, the last two, as the only ever good shots I've taken of them..and both of them are BIF which surprised me as well.

Lovely shots - I didn't know there was any such thing as blue-banded bees. Thanks for enlightening me!

The final addition to the "studio"
First: My setup will not make the small slices That Sippy Jug gets, and it was not intended too, But it does allow me to get sharper images of the subjects I shoot!!!
The reason for this setup was I am lazy 😉 and I want to be able to make changes easier when I am setting up a shot without getting up to move the subject manually.

This should be my last change, in the other post I had a small lightweight cross slide "milling" table supporting the. Camera with a nikkor 200mm f4 macro lens, due to the weight of the rig the milling table adjustments would bind.
And I thank Sippyjug for putting me on to the table because it work and was in my price range.
The rail in the photograph retails for $419 and is OVER KILL, but it is stable and I now have electronic control over all of the movements for the camera. I did find this rail on Facebook Market Place for $100 and a 140 mile round trip!!
I did replace the had wheel with a stepper motor for approx,$40 and a couple of hours labor.
I put the final touches on this at 4:30 this morning
The controller is the little white box on the left of the bench, I gives me fore and aft , left and right movements and allows me to rotate the subject CW or CCW.
The little controller on the right controls the Fore and aft, left & right and up & down movements of the "stage".
Plus manual coarse movements of the stage.

I first intended to zoom in on the hills for a sunset, and was all set to find high elevation to clear the tree line. I ran out of time and stamina climbing up from the road so I swapped lenses to a 14mm and shot the first dead tree I could find. It gets pretty dark quickly in the Prescott National Forest and I had left the trail. Fortunately I had siri find my car because I have a lousy sense of direction.

Wow, those are gorgeous!
