They do, don't they, Graham? … Some of the best pussy pics I've ever seen.

Not to demean your own work, Graham … but, you have to agree - a little on the dark side - right?

However, that said - I should point out - the Nikon D7100 - is standing you in GREAT stead - is it not?

Hopefully I shall get somewhere near them ,eventually !!!
Yes it is dark on the cats coat for certain versions 2/3/4/5?.. will improve I,m sure 🙀
Yes the camera is producing the goods its all down to lighting, though I know I haven't got it right YET !!!

60 sounds kinda low … is that in feet or meters?

2.4 is the wavelength, the transmitter sends its signals on …

Doesn't tell me anything about the power of the unit.

BTW, Graham - the Guide Number of the original YN-685 is 197' ...

Checking up on the guide number output ,watch this space

When Matilda ALLOWS - huh, Graham? … er … Right!

So, tell me - how many warts does Matilda have?

Graham - take a look at Gene's Pussy Pics … Bounce seems to work well there - ok?

Yes,no cooperation from Matilda no photo !!!! Period !!!
Warts,ha ha wasn't a literal statement as I,m sure you know !!! Maybe this mornings cat breakfast !
Yes, I have already agreed that Genes bounce photos look great ,bounce and or softboxes and or umberellas are all in the pipeline time allowing,as well as Matilda.

It looks like the flash is near or on the camera, and directly aimed at the cat.

Try bounce light - much more flattering.

Wow, Graham!!!! … Matilda looks quite austere in this shot … are you sure that's what you want?

She's about four shades lighter, there, in your Avatar …

OR, is THIS - a different cat, Graham?

Yes,I,m aware she appears under exposed I was after Whatever the set up produced, while mearly observing what the flash and bender produced ,warts and all, there will be off camera bounce and or softbox photos being taken when time and cat allows .

Yup!!! … No more sleepless nights worrying about it, Graham - glad you made a solid decision, at long last!

So, did you check thoroughly, to make sure your new flash unit, will work properly with the D7100?

Which one did you get? … May I ask?

I went for yonguno 685 11 highier output ttl, though I shall be mainly manual.

A very wise decision, Graham … you already HAVE one of the best DX cameras Nikon has ever produced!!!
There are only the D7200 and the D500 - better, and - perhaps (just, perhaps, only marginally) - the new D7500. Speaking of "marginally" - I was, wasn't I? … The increase in overall light admitted with a FF camera, amounts to no more than ONE STOP!!!! … And, to get there, you need buy much more expensive lenses than you need for a DX camera, PLUS - you have to put up with all that extra weight, too!!!!!

Glad you came to your senses, Graham, and decided to stay with your beloved D7100 (my best DX, too!) and I wish you good luck with your new flash unit - mated to Nikon's best DX cameras - it is, isn't it?
A very wise decision, Graham … you already HAVE on... (show quote)

Glad I have come to my senses, couldn't take any more weeks/months of sleepless nights and constantly trawling the net and everywhere trying to make a decision, now I can get on with life ! 🤗

Many thanks for all who contributed their thoughts on my indecisiveness over FX and various camera considered, however I have decided after much reading and watching on you tube to stay with and fall in love again with my d7100 DX
WHY ?
Well so many good things said about it,I thought I would edge towards the better cat images I was seeking by learning more and using/putting into practice FLASH !!!!! Not pop up but have invested in a decent ttl flash and defusers etc, hoping this will lead to what I seek.

Only shoot raw if you are intending to post process all or most of you images. If you will rarity post process, stick with jpegs.

I shoot raw only. I can export the images as jpegs when I need them after editing them in my raw processor of choice, DXO Photolab Elite.

Think the answer to your question is the quality of Raw is consistent whatever else you set your camera to record,of course RAw file has far more latitude to edit whatever bits of your photo you might want to change.
Graham
Ps I shoot and edit Raw in Zoner photo pro 18
