Why are we, via the government, providing subsidies for tobacco companies growing poison?

The usual reason: Lobbyists and Taxes. Now we as a nation are headed down the same road with Pot being legalized.

I started smoking at 11 years of age. It was on a Boy Scout weekend camping trip where I was introduced to smoking. It was not long before I was hooked.

Any advice on photography in Moscow and/or Saint-Petersburg? I'm trying to decide if I should just take my D7000 with 17-50 walkaround lens or my two camera set-up including D5100 and either 55-200 or 105 f/2.8. I'm concerned mostly about standing out. (I also have a Sony RX100M that I thought I'd stick in my bag, or pocket).

I spent 2 days in St Petersburg two years ago and had an absolutely wonderful visit. I had a group of seven and had made arrangements with a Russian Tour guide prior to arriving. They provided Vehicle and driver as well as an extremely proficient Guide, Visa's were required and provided by the Tour company.
I had video and still cameras with me and found very little use for telephoto capability. Most of my pix were taken in the various museums and buildings visited using wide angle or standard lens. We experienced absolutely no animosity or antagonism at any time during our 2 day visit and did have meals in two local restaurant/Pubs as well as dozens of attractions. Actually we have experienced considerably more thievery problems in Rome and Venice then we have in Russia. In Italy the pickpockets are legendary. We have been pickpocketed on three separate visits in Italy. They seem to concentrate on the woman's bag. On one occasion we were on a local bus which had standing room only and a man/woman team went into my wife's purse and got her wallet. They timed the theft to coincide with a scheduled stop which allowed the man to grab the wallet and jump off the bus and run. The woman seemed to just disappear. Interestingly, the wallet was returned to us in the USA a month later by the Rome Police who recovered it (sans cash of course, but with all the now cancelled credit cards intact)

Well, it seems to me that creeps in politics that misuse their positions for personal or Party gain should be fired no matter which Party they belong to. NO EXCEPTIONS. What we have in our Country seems to be that the Democrat Party, having a majority of the Press on their side, is allowed to slide on transgressions committed by members of that Party while the opposition Party gets slammed at every opportunity well out of proportion to what the transgression may be. Example:Christy is the subject of a massive investigative exercise over the possibility that he had something to do with causing a traffic jam, while on the other hand we have Democrat transgressions such as the IRS being used to target opposition Party members in order to thwart their support for their Candidate in a Presidential election, gun-running schemes that went awry and got innocents killed, and the abandonment of our people in Benghazi leading to their slaughter being stonewalled and swept under the carpet by those that caused those situations, and the Press seems complicit in doing so. Politics is generally a dirty business, but some transgressions are worse then others. Nobody was killed when Radel stuffed his nose with coke, and,to their credit, he was pressured by his Party to resign as opposed to how the Dems have reacted to most of their members foibles. To sum up, power corrupts, but with Top Management and a press willing to look the other way on half the corrupted officials, our government will just continue to breed more of the same.

loujenn, forgive me, after due consideration, your decision to remain silent is most likely the correct decision.

Better to remain silent and have people think you a fool than to open your mouth and prove them right.

The utter nastiness shown in your utterances should disqualify you from participating in any discourse. Play nice or go elsewhere. Spirited contributions are interesting but your nasty jabs are NOT.

The minimum wage has not kept pace with what Americans produce.

Actually, the productivity chart reflects the degree of automation and computerization that has been introduced over the years, and has very little to do with the productivity of those at the lower end of the wage scale. The minimum wage is reserved for those that are capable of, or provide only minimum relative productivity. This is not meant to put the low-end workers down, it's just the way the value system works. Raise the minimum wages paid and all other wages will inevitable rise by a comparative percentage. Again inevitably, when the cost of production rises, the cost of goods and services rise. (inflation)
Inflation is ONLY good for the government. Thats because since the government takes a percentage of all wages, its "take" rises commensurately, and as it prefers, rather stealthily. Unfortunately, for the worker, it is like a dog chasing its tail. It can never catch up.

it's bad because there's nothing good or right about it. it certainly isn't Christian.
it's bad because his workers need food stamps to feed their families. who pays for that? and if you argue food stamps should be eliminated, then those folks would go hungry. is that bad?
are you arguing that dude is paid $15M because he's worth it or because he works 750 times harder than his employees? I argue he's paid that much because he has control. it's not capitalism - it's cronyism. we're living in a plutocracy and it's getting worse.
have I changed any minds? I didn't think so. these arguments are so pointless. I wish I could stay away and wasn't provoked to respond. I know - so do you.

In my opinion, a corporation is free to spend its money in any way that the shareholders approve. If they believe that an individual is worth the incredible salary's that some receive because of the job they are doing then so be it. It is their money! That is not the same situation that we have with government employees at the top level. Congress can, and does continuously vote ITSELF raises with tax payer's money, and our President who seems to have an unlimited and self-determined expense account (which is also tax free for the most part) as does the hierarchy of our Congress. Why was it OK for Pelosi to fly home to Frisco every weekend at a ridiculous cost to taxpayers on a government 767 airliner rather then say a Gulfstream? Simply because she chose to. Rather then being upset by CEO's (who are directly responsible to their Board and Shareholders) we should be directing our ire towards those that actually work for us, and are abusing their positions.
We had a Revolution and supposedly got rid of Royalty, but somehow our leaders have reimposed it all, just under another name.

More telling is Obama coming off a $4 million taxpayer funded vaca complaining about Income Inequality. Isn't that the definition of hypocrisy?

Speaking of Obama's Vacation in Hawaii he came back to DC on AF1 at a cost of $800K but Michelle decided to stay behind......so whoops there goes another $800K to satisfy her whim.
Incredible how well our resident "Royalty" treats themselves.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Being in the employment business for much of my working life I would have to point out that the markets appraisal of any given career's worth is mostly based on supply and demand, which is itself influenced by technological change. In a Capitalist driven system the scarcer the talent one brings to the table is, the more they can demand for their efforts.

Yes it does exist but it is quite rare. I have observed it only one time (in Sarasota FL) and I have spent a great deal of my life on the water. Good luck on your trip. We have visited the Society Islands in the South Pacific as well as much of the South China Sea and you are in for a treat!

I was a heavy smoker for almost 50 years, (used anything...cigs, pipe, and cigars) and even though I recognized the bad effects it was having on my body I was unable to successfully break the addiction on my own. I needed help and once I admitted that to myself I looked up "Ethical Hypnotists" and made an appointment to visit. Coupled with my sincere desire to quit the habit, 2 sessions later I had stopped smoking and have never again started. That was 28 years ago. Probably would not be around if I had not quit.
Do it for yourself and your family!!!

Unions and mandated Minimum Wage laws are legalized price-Fixing mechanism's, and as such, are anti-consumer and the base cause of inflation. In the real-world marketplace there will always be relative winners and losers. There is always a price to pay to become a "winner". Education, and relevant experience are the usual rungs upward, but 10 years of tightening a lug on an assembly line is really only a multiple of the 2 or 3 weeks it took to learn where the tools are and the toilet and lunchroom are to successfully fill that spot on the line. Artificially setting some arbitrary price for labor only serves to raise the price of whatever that industry is producing. It follows that as the price of any product rises, the desirability of it to the masses diminishes unless there is a compensating increase in value. It's generally known as "pricing yourself out of the market". Why is almost everything we see in the appliance market, the clothing market etc are imports from other countries?.....because its less expensive and the value is perceived as equal to, or better then U.S. produced product.
It's the marketplace at work in a free market. There are only 3 ways to change this eventuality. Build a significantly more valuable product, build a equal product at a very competitive price, or have the government prohibit the importation of foreign built product (or services). Where is the "value added" feature of mandated minimum wage laws, or for that matter, mandated Union Rules?

The TSA is just another Government "Leaf Raking Program". Low hiring standards and Minimal training make for a facade of a security system. As been noted, not a single actual terrorist has ever been identified by TSA, and they fail most tests for IED's being smuggled aboard aircraft. A huge bureaucracy that each year only grows more expensive with little if any improvement.
