Are you saying that you can't use 3rd party battery in the mark 4. if so that is a good reason not to upgrade.
Some aftermarket batteries will not work. They will work in the 60D and the 70D but not the 80D or the 5D IV. I've never tried cheapies in my 6D or 5D SR. The high end batteries are N compliant
and they will work. I personally believe some of the high end aftermarket batteries are as good as or better than the Canon branded ones.
As you know, UV filters are not needed on a digital camera. They do protect the threads at the front of the lens. They offer little protection to the glass other than maybe finger prints or getting splashed. If you were to drop the camera straight down onto something protruding, the glass filter will break and most likely the lens front element will take some damage as well, so don't do that. A good hood also offers protection. I personally never shoot with a UV or protective filter but I always have the hood on.
Ronz is right. To get those action shots you want the high frame per second rate of the 7Dll.
But, with a $7500 budget you should be able to get a good used 1DX and an EF 100-400L II plus a EF 1.4 III teleconverter.

The battery is not necessarily at 100% when the green light comes on. Leave the battery in the charger for a few more hours and then check it.
The green light comes on when the charger has determined that no more charge will go into the battery. Leaving the battery in the charger for a few more hours or weeks or months will not make the battery accept any more charge. When the green light comes on, the charger switches to maintain mode.
I have several cameras that use the LP-E6 and LP-E6N. What I do is charge the batteries and use them until they go dead then recharge. Some of the older batteries no longer accept a full charge, but they still work. So far only one has died completely. I'm pretty sure that one originally came with my 60D. I do have a few top quality aftermarket batteries that perform quite well and we're not cheap. Some aftermarket batteries won't even work in my 80D or 5DIV. Bottom line, just keep recharging the battery until it will no longer take a charge, then replace it; and always have a spare.
The stare is precious; great shot...
I own the Nikkor 200-500 and for the money it's a darn nice lens. Sure, there are better but they also cost a boat load more. I've compared it to my Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and I like the Nikkor a wee bit better. I've also used the matching 1.4 teleconverter's on both lenses and in my opinion, the Nikkor is the winner. I also have the Sigma 150-600 Sport in Canon EF mount and except for its colossal weight, I feel the Sport is better than both, both optically and build quality. But again, for $1300 the Nikkor is a great lens.
I read a posting the other day and someone said the D500 is superior to the 7D II because one has 153 focus points and one has 61. Now I just happen to own both cameras and the D500's 153 focus points is not at all what makes it better than the 7D II. Both have great AF systems but realistically one is using either the 9 central focus points or just the center focus point. What makes the Nikon better than the Canon is the Nikon has much newer technology in it, the Canon is an older camera. So, to throw my answer into the ring, you don't really need a whole lot of focus points, you only need a few that work well and in many cases, only 1.
Welcome to the UHH.
That's what I want to be when I grow up, proficient astrophotography. I've always been fascinated by the night sky. Too bad my corner of PA has so much light pollution.
When you say mountains of Pennsylvania, that could be a really big area. I'm guessing you don't have the light pollution problem there we have here. Again, welcome aboard.
I was attempting to reach out and offer an olive branch and kind words to ChrisT when I discovered he had blocked me. Not that I really care. But after his apparently luke warm apology to UHH I figured it was the proper thing to do.
I personally don't block anyone. If someone doesn't want me to participate in their conversation, so be it, no sweat off my brow.
I believe I was blocked because I questioned his obsessive posting of irrelevant topics and questions as it appeared to me the only possible
goal was to increase the postings count.
Oh well, it is what it is. I'm certainly sure I won't miss out on anything interesting or educational because of it.
The simple answer, no, 2.8 is 2.8.
Why did he pay $3000 for a $1600 camera?!
Nice photo. Isn't it called a peace lily?
