I just did a comparison of the Canon vs the Sony 100-400 and was totally shocked by the much better image quality of the Sony over the Canon. The Sony 100-400 has the best IQ of any zoom lens I have used in this focal length range and I highly recommend giving it a try. Combined with the Sony 1.4x converter it could be a perfect hand-held birding combination.

I have the Sony A9 with the Sony 100-400. I was just in Florida doing some birding. I was very pleasantly surprised at how sharp the images were with that combo, handheld!

Just prompted to download the latest version and what a disappointment. I've been a great supporter of this application but this version is a retrograde step and I recommend caution if you plan to try it. I am using a new iMac and 4.1 has been pretty stable but 4.2 is very very buggy. Let me know if anyone else has tried it and how it behaves?

I had difficulty downloading it, but once i did, i found it worked well. It has not been released yet, will be released on March 19.

This looks like an exceptional trip and guide.

Federico is exceptional. His books are part of some of the places we stayed. He is one of the judges for the monthly Masai photography contest.
His truck is made for photographers, with a bar across the window to lean on or it can be removed. On his side of the car, he drives, is a platform with a tripod head so he just places his camera/lens right on the head.
This is Federicos report from the trip I took with him.

Hi all,

In 2018 I was in Africa for several weeks on 2 separate non-photography tours. While they were enjoyable, I had expected to be able to spend more time photographing the amazing wildlife. I am now making plans to go back in 2021 (we’re busy for the rest of 2020). My focus is on locating and booking a Photography Tour with LOTS of time spent photographing the animals. Kenya is where I would like to spend most, if not all, of my time back in Africa.

It would be very helpful if any of you who have actually been on a photography tour in Africa could make suggestions and recommendations as to a tour leader or company to go with. Hearing both positives and negatives about specific companies and leaders would be much appreciated a d very helpful. Feel free to PM me if you would be more comfortable responding in that manner.

Thanks in advance

I was in Kenya with 5 long Island photographers. We did a photo tour with Federico Veronesi. He is an awesome photographer and guide. His own personal truck lives in the Masai Mara. It was an amazing adventure, my third trip to Africa.

I wanted to find out how many photos I have taken on my a99ii so I contacted Sony at 800-222-7669 (Sony). They told me that their is a free download that they will send me so that I can get the Shutter Actuation Count for my a99ii. Just follow the instructions on the download and you will find the Shutter count.

I would love the download link. Please share this.
Thanks

For those of you who use Photodex products, like Proshow Gold, or Proshow Producer, this one's for you. I got an email today that Photodex Corporation is shutting down after 30 years.

The replacement they recommend is from the Netherlands, is not a one-time fee, but is subscription based ONLY (Yuk!)....either $10.00/mo or $25.00/mo based on the version. I'll pass on that, thank you.

If you have a license to Proshow, you have until Jan 31, to make sure that you have downloaded the latest version. You can use your current Proshow forever, without support, but make sure that you have saved your Product Registration Key, in case you need to install Proshow on a new computer.

Details at: http://www.photodex.com/shutdown.html

I have used Proshow producer for years. I am not longer able to download any of my shows that are on the site. The installer has not worked for me for a few years.

There is a huge difference between camera club competitions and fine art photography.
If you look at the professional photographers, many would get terrible scores by camera club judges.

I submitted a photo of a leopard on a tree, sitting with her tail hanging. The judge wanted me to crop the image and move the tail...wtf!!! I just laughed at the ignorance of the judge, clearly not a wildlife expert.

Topaz Labs is one of the only two software programs I'm aware of that will not save your work when you open and process a raw file. It will save an output image but you will not be able to return to the processing you did with the raw file and make any modifications. You have to start from scratch. It will open a raw file but it lacks numerous features that are expected from raw file converters like lens distortion profiles and camera input profiles. For processing raw files I would rate it as unusable.

Luminar was recently released in version 4. It offers much more than Topaz Labs for raw file processing but compared with competitive software it contains some glaring inadequacies. The Windows version remains unstable and too many people report it crashing. Using it feels like your testing a beta and until they get it working it's buggy as hell. It's focused on the "effects" user who enjoys editing their photos by applying canned effects. As an actual image editor it's very frustrating. For example Luminar offers adjustment layers with gradient masks but the gradients are re-editable -- you can't go back and tweak their positioning -- the word stupid is coming to mind.

I'd consider other options. What camera are you using?

I have both programs. I am not sure what you are referring to with Topaz not being able to save a raw file. I open Topaz Studio from photoshop, after creating a second layer. When I finish in Topaz, it goes back to photoshop. I can then make any additional adjustments or just delete the Topaz layer. This is not the best raw converter, so it doesn't do things that Adobe camera raw does.

Your comments about Luminar 4 are not correct either. I use a windows computer, have not had the issues you comment about. I love the sky replacement feature and the AI features are great.

I use both these programs, after I do adjustments in Adobe Camera raw.

My suggestion is to download a trial and see what you like best about each program.

I was a Nikon user, still have the D500. I now have the Sony a7111 and the a9. I also have the rx100 v1, a 24-200 zoom. There are times where I will have one full frame Sony with a Sony 24-105 lens and I take the rx100 v1 for the telephoto use. The menus are similar on all the Sony cameras I have. I have tried to keep the settings the same in all the cameras. Then there are times where I just take the little camera. While it is very pricey, I am happy I have it.

Enjoy your new camera.

I also use a Sony A7111. Tamron has some great lenses for Sony at about half the cost of the Sony lenses.

I have the Sony 100-400 with a Sony 1.4 tc. Used this combo recently in Kenya. It was awesome.

I am thinking of purchasing either a Nikon dx 18-55 vr and a 55-300 vr or an 18-300 vr. While I like the idea of one lens, I don’t want to sacrifice image quality. I am a hobbiest, not a professional. I mostly use my camera while traveling and take a wide variety of pictures. Any help would be appreciated. I would be pairing the lenses with either a D5600 or a D7500. Thanks

I am selling a NIkon 28-300 vr lens. While it is for full frame, it works great with a cropped sensor. It is a great walk around lens. I have been selling my Nikon gear, as I am now using Sony cameras.

I am asking $600 plus shipping.
PM me if interested.
