I have the R5 and several EF lenses. I bought the 70-200 RF after my old EF-1 started wearing out. The RF model is definitely an improvement in all aspects, but I have no plans to replace my other lenses until they too wear out. The cost is just too prohibitive.

On the R5 the focus point will be red when out of range (too close) then blue when focus is achieved.

I can’t speak to your Fuji lens specifically but my Canon 100 macro has “bellows extension” factor. As you focus closer to a small object and the lens is “zoomed” farther from the film plane to achieve focus, you get exposure fall-off and must either open the aperture or slow the shutter to compensate. Back in the day I had an Mamyia RB67. It had a scale on the body that indicated the amount of exposure drop as determined by the extension of the bellows. This could be part of your issue.

I wonder if any of you have a formulaic method for photographing solar eclipses. Back in the day, I photographed an annular eclipse using a 5 inch reflector telescope focused on a white screen, which I photographed with a Hasselblad. Came out well. But I am clueless about the digital age. Have a Fujifilm XT4 with a range of telephotos, including a 100-400 with 1.4x multiplier. Also a Nikon D7100. What to do? Focus directly to sun? Filters? Screens? Lens focal lengths?
Appreciate any advice!
Jeff

Here’s a composite I made from the 2017 eclipse in WY. I used a 5D3 with a 400mm 2.8 lens with a 2x converter and an 8 stop ND filter. The exposure for the phases was 8000 at f-22 ISO 100. At totality I removed the ND filter (rear mount) and shot 1/80 at f-7.1 ISO 100. For focus I shot a series of images the day before with manual focus and taped the focus ring for the actual event. If I do it again next year I will up the ISO for the totality shots. It was risky shooting at 1/80 with such a long lens.

Out in the bright sunlight yesterday, I was photographing a water scene with my D850, only to discover the photos were under-exposed. I figure I've done wrong. The camera was set to "P", Active D off and matrix metering mode. Any thoughts?

If your camera gives you consistently underexposed images and you like to use P mode, simply set your exposure comp to one stop over. Or bracket if this is an intermittent problem with your 850. All cameras miss the mark from time to time. Your review screen gives you all the info you need.

Are the Godox Canon model flash units compatible with Canon R series cameras? I have the Godox MF-R76 ring flash for macro work and the Godox V860IIC standard flash.

I have heard rumors that they are not vully compatible with the Canon R5 and R7 in ETTL mode.
I have 3 Godox units with an R5. They work perfectly, although I have an annoying intermittent issue where the ISO will change to Auto. A real problem with flash in dark locations. The auto will try to expose for the ambient and cause major overexposure.
Can UH members share their experiences?

I typically use 3-4 lights. A speed light on a stick at the camera with one or two Godox A200’s on stands lighting adjacent rooms. I balance interior with exterior light with shutter speed and use layer masks in PS for eliminating flash reflections in windows. I use the built in camera level to square up vertical and horizontal lines and LR to correct when I can’t (usually for exteriors). Everything in RAW with lots of burning and dodging.

I do a fair amount of real estate photography for area realtors. I don’t own a tilt shift lens but use Lightroom for distortion corrections. It works incredibly well for my less than critical clients comparing features from many different homes on the market, so I don’t feel the need to step up to a higher level photographically. One tip I would offer is to shoot buildings slightly loose since LR will crop out areas as it performs the corrections. Since time is money, and with real estate not paying significantly, my aim is to get the job done a fast as possible. So a tilt-shift lens is not on my want list.

I totally agree. There’s nothing more annoying than vertical video presented on a horizontal screen as you see so often from amateur news clips. I find myself yelling at the TV every time.

I have the R5 and it has the same issue under certain lights. Slow shutter speeds are not and option at a sporting event so you may be out of luck using electronic. The only advantage with electronic is the ability to take 20fps bursts. Your mechanical shutter will give you 6-8 fps and with anti-flicker enabled you should be fine. Do a few tests when you get there. Sometimes the flicker is minimal and can be corrected in post.

If the flash works without the cable, then the cable is bad. Since the cable is new I would try returning it. Otherwise try cleaning the contacts with alcohol. If you have an older cable, give that a test.

Yes. You can always store files on a flash drive to save disk space on your main computer. But I suggest you invest in an auxiliary USB drive. You can get terabytes of space for $100 or less.
