No it still can happen but maybe not as easily in a pure business setting. When my son was young we had dirt bikes, go carts and snowmobiles, as did other neighbors and friends. The kids were taught to work on them all and respect doing a job correctly using the proper tools. My rule for MX racing was if my son didn’t have the bike serviced and ready to go we would stay home. I only recall not going once in about 10 years.

As they got older the work turned to cars and lifted trucks. My son built a 383 stroker engine for his high school senior project. Out of those kids we ended up with a master mechanic and drag racing champion, a automotive performance center owner and a career army master mechanic in charge of maintaining helicopters, as well as a few others in technical careers. So it can be done.

i thing you are out of line here .this is what is wrong with kids today they dont get the chance to experience what work is like .when i was a kid i started to spend time in the local car shop , found out that i liked it .spent 50 plus doing that .without that local car shop who know what .with all the lawyers today and litigious society , nobody [ business ] would do it anymore .

Reminds me of this old used car dealer. “Dapper Dan your used car man, I’d give em away but my wife won’t let me!”

Check out Jeff Cable’s blog... he normally shoots the high end DSLRs but has been testing the R5/6 for a good while. He is very impressed...

I am thinking about buying a Canon R5 or R6.
I currently own a Canon EOS 6d. I have researched both Rs.

I wanted to get input from people who have switched to these mirrorless cameras, or stayed with the DSLR camera that they have. If they bought another camera, would they buy a mirrorless camera or stay with DSLR?

Thanks.

Power inverter to run your regular charger might be the least expensive and most versatile way to go.

I am looking for a car charger and the ones I have seen so far only have 2 pins in them where my OEM wall chargers have 4. I would assume 4 is better than 2, or is there a difference?

I prefer the bodies with the integrated vertical grips, but many don’t. I can suggest you contact Biggs Camera on King Street in Charlotte. The may stock an appropriate grip for your Nikon or even gave a used one. If so you could go down and try it. The Best Buy at North Lake, near the mall, also has a pretty good selection of camera stuff. Might be worth a call.

If I was buying an add on grip I would probably get an OEM one. But that’s just my preference for equipment...

I am looking for recommendations for the purchase of a hand grips or battery pack for my Nikon Z6 and D500. I have recently read that a hand grip used with the lighter Nikon 300mm F/4 PF lens helps with holding steady and not touching the lens while shooting. Has anyone had any experience with these. I am not looking to purchase a number of them and trying to decide on one for the Z6 since I use that more but eventually may add the D500. Does a battery pack act as a hand grip too? I saw a used Meike hand grip for the Z6 at $40 but not sure that is what I want so looking for any recommendations or someone who has experience with these.

We'll have to agree to disagree in this one...

The 40 isn’t actually the culprit when it comes to ridiculousness. No version of “camera-in-front-of-face” ever escapes looking ridiculous, acoarst some worse than others. The more massive is the machinery, then the more ridiculous is the effect. In that sense, the miniature 40 is hardly to blame.

Whatever ... I really do looooove my pancakes, any time of day or night ! Always room for one more ;-)

Then I guess the question is what exactly does input weigh...😳😎

IMHO, any input from chg canon is worth it's weight in gold. That dude knows what he's talking about. I've shot Canon digital for a dozen years or so and whenever I read one of his posts, I most always learn something!

PS And I started with a Nikon 35mm over 50 years ago so I didn't just fall off the d^mn turnip truck. <g>

If you are looking for around 50mm on your crop body you might take a look at the 40mm pancake lens. It is very small and very sharp edge to edge. It is also around $200 or less new. My daughter has one I gave her. I have a 24-70II f2.8 so I didn’t need it. And it looks ridiculous on my 1D body...

I use Photo Mechanic to cull my images. In this case I was shooting four models who were handling multiple snakes one at a time. I was instructed to only use images where the snake's tongue was out. To capture that I chose to use burst shooting. I first eliminated all images not showing the forked tongue. I then eliminated bad poses, bad snake position, bad model faces (surprise, anguish, closed eyes, etc), and then picked the best of the rest. It took me several days.

Yes, I follow his blog. He did mention that he rarely used his DSLRs since getting the R5 and R6 bodies...

You can just setup for 16 FPS and hold the shutter down and get the 6,000 shots in about 6.25 minutes. I don’t think that would use much battery...

Don’t know how he sorts his images. But Jeff Cable, who shoots the Olympics, said he shot nearly 85,000 photos at one Olympics and culled it down to 45,000 keepers...

Wow, my question would be how you choose the best shots when you take 6,000 photos in one studio shoot? How do you differentiate between what must be hundreds of similar shots?

I have had the 1Dx2 since 2016. I guess my input would be it depends on shooting mode and a few other factors. Live View will use up battery faster as can the GPS settings. I think I have mine set to update GPS location every 5 or 15 minutes... I’m usually shooting in the same general area so that is sufficient. I also have mine set to sleep after a minute as the startup time is like 1/10th second. How long and what you display on the rear screen could also be a factor.

That said in warm weather shooting I get probably 2000-3500 shots on a battery. I bought a spare battery for mine when I purchased it. I also still have an old 1D MkIII which uses a similar battery. So I have 3 batteries for 2 bodies. But the old body really rarely gets used. The high iso capabilities are miles apart.

I have thought about a 3 but will probably wait and see what they come up with as a mirrorless 1D.

I recently bought the 1DX iii and read that the battery is good for about 3,000 pictures (LP-E19).

I have 1000 pictures with the battery still 1/4 charged. Most of the pictures I have taken have been outdoors in cold weather so I figure that’s pretty good.

I have also been using the view screen quite a bit learning how to use the camera settings.

What is your experience? How many shots do you get on a charge and under what conditions?

My philosophy has always been to buy high quality tools and not that many of them. Cameras or woodworking it works for me. Maybe one day I will buy some Martin woodworking machines.

But I have seen people who can cut dovetails with a hacksaw and a screwdriver. But the question is why?

As an amateur cabinetmaker - I'd rather have a Festool saw than a SkilSaw. I'd rather have Lie Nielsen hand planes than the current Stanley crap, Forrest saw blades in my table and compound miter, Timberwolf band saw blades in my band saw, Whiteside router bits in my routers, and so on. The right tools do make a difference, and while they cost a bit more up front, they are made to last, stay sharper longer, and just "feel right" in my hands. And I can't stand Craftsman and Stanley hand and power tools since they abandoned domestic manufacturers and opted for off-shore. The quality has gone way down hill.

Drilling a proper pilot hole ensures the screw goes in straight, btw.

I agree and don’t buy a bunch of cards. I bought a 128gb CFast card when I got my 1Dx2 in 2016. I think it cost $360 then. My camera came with a 64gb card and reader. I can fit about 5,000 shots on the 128 and have not shot more than 2500 in one day... Certainly disk space is much less expensive...

Blurryeyed wrote:
Those cards are really expensive, I only have one, over the years I have had several CF cards and have found that it is an inefficient way to manage your photos, a 64 gig card will hold some 1500+ RAW files, so I really don't see a need for multiple CFExpress cards. I do have a few 64 gig SD cards, I just don't see the need for a bunch of cards.

Processing video takes a lot of computing power. I know people that use phones to live stream drag racing and the phones will often overheat...especially in hot weather. It may be an issue of the camera not being able to cool itself fast enough...

After reading a few threads on other sites I have to wonder if the R5 issue has something to do with the video settings on the camera. Nobody said that but what I did notice is that most of the complaints came from people shooting video, for some their camera would actually lock up, I don't do video but the problem occurred after I set the camera to 8K video, I was thinking that I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about even though I did not take any video I did change camera settings and it was after that that the problem surfaced.

I have changed the video settings back to 4K/60, it will take time to see if it made any difference .
