I do use a drip machine. It is the only way to get a repeatable shot.

Yes I did remove the bottom. I used a tile saw. Although you can do it easily with a glass cutter, then hot and cold water. http://www.ehow.com/how_5598599_cut-bottoms-off-wine-bottles.html
