I have begun planning a driving tour down the Blueridge Parkway and Smokey Mountains in mid to late October this year. I have found that UHH has excellent feedback on sights and interesting "must see" areas no matter where we venture. We can do mild hiking. I believe lodging may be a problem if I don't begin planning now. I have perused the Internet , but feel like a personal touch of those who live there or who have gone before is invaluable. I look forward to your comments and thank you in advance.

A lot of good information has been provided. So instead of repeating let me just add .... purchase the book "Walking the Blue Ridge" by Leonard M. Adkins. It has the mile marker description for the entire Parkway. I think I picked my copy up at the Linville Falls site many years ago but probably can be bought online. We live not too far off from the BRP and it has come in handy on the many visits we make every year.

My wife and I are traveling from the United States to Cancun Mexico. We have never traveled outside the United States before, so we have questions as to what we may take to Mexico without tax or penalties. I have read that I am only allowed one professional camera and the limit is $500.00 in value for all photo equipment. I find this hard to believe, but my wife is freaking out. We plan to take a d7100, d500, and d750 with about 8 lenses between the two of us. Valued at much more that $500.00.
Has anyone traveled to Mexico and could you advise me on what the custom regulations are. I have googled it and get many different and conflicting answers.
Thank you in advance for any information that will help us in our decisions.

I have traveled to Mexico many times with no issues as to what I carry. No one ever asked what I as carrying - my personal experience. Any limitation generally would be a factor if you are leaving things behind - not if you are exiting with the items you went in with (for duty). Should a problem arise you can always ask for the items to be listed in your passport to be verified upon exiting the country.

I travel a decent amount internationally (2 to 3 times a year normally) with a good load of my camera equipment and have never run into any issue anywhere.

There are not a whole lot of photo ops in Cancun itself for that much equipment unless you're planning to visit Chichenitza, Uxmal, Merida, Tulum, Campeche etc. near that area in the Yucatan Peninsula.

I feel the need to replace the very wobbly tripod I have. :)
It needs to be able to take my Canon EOS 550 and a 300mm lens.
In summer I want to try my hand at some star photos, but without the rotation stuff. (Can't afford that atm) Still, eventually I might.
I kinda don't know which head I'd like / need, and what the good makes are. I'm leaning toward a ball head, but I don't know why lol.
I don't want to spend a huge amount (preferably under $100, but that might not be feasible unless second hand -- which would be okay)
I want to be able to go low down, as well as my (eye) height (I'm 5'2). Doesn't have to split off into a mono pod, I got one of those too.

So...suggestions?

If you are patient you may be able to pick one up to satisfy your needs. B&H has a daily deal on their website and they often rotate various tripods with a significant discount. Just last week they had a $280 Benro TAD18CHD1 Series 1 Adventure Carbon Fiber Tripod for $130. What a deal! Keep looking .....

Do you know any good sites to help understand the focusing system? What about a 1.4 extender when using a 70-200 2.8 L lens? A 2x extender with the same lens? Any info would help. Thanks.

Anybody got a link to the standalone version? I will NOT go to the cloud, and their never ending push to sell us more, more, more makes me even more determined. You absolutely cannot find the standalone anywhere on their site.

As others have indicated - yes, just make sure to format it in the camera you are using.

Also ..... From Montego Bay you can go to Negril along the coast to see the light house. If you go to Dunns River Falls, you'll be in Ocho Rios. The drive on A3 towards Kingston thru' mid island is nice and there are many photo ops. You can also go along the eastern coast towards Port Antonio. Along the way you can get to the Blue Mountain area. We had to turn back on that road to the mountain due to a mud slide. Continuing on, you can get to the Blue Lagoon area for a neat raft trip down the river. Not a whole lot to see in Kingston, possibly Bob Marley Museum if you're interested and Port Royal.

If you happen to drive, be very very careful esp. around towns. In case of a fender bender you may want to be judicious about if and where to stop. Our rental car was rear ended by some kids in Ocho Rios (just some very minor stuff) and we got out to get the driver info etc. and drove to the police station to file a report and was informed by the police that stopping was ill advised due to the high crime esp. after dark. Fortunately our CC covered the damages.

Have fun, it's a beautiful island.

What is the best walk around lens for the 7D MKII? I currently use the 17-55mm f/2.8 but if doesn't have much reach. Price is somewhat of a consideration. I'm new here so if this has already been discussed please let me know where I can find it. I just read a Nikon user ask the same question. Thank you.

For me it's the 24-105 4.0L on both type bodies.

no i know how to use it i'm asking for advice on which gear would be best to bring to Alaska as I've never been. I've heard a lot of people say you want 500-600mm for capturing things far away but I've also seen some people say they only took 200-300mm and been happy so I'm asking what gear that I have should be brought on the cruise and/or what gaps should I try to fill

Last year we did a land tour and I took the 100-400 and a 24-70. Could have lugged more equipment but was happy with the selection.

N, if you're already losing SD cards, what will keep you from losing a different storage device? Now you've got two things to hang onto!! LoL
Why don't you just get a card big enough to hold all the shots you take on that vacation and NEVER take it out of the camera.
Maybe a carabiner to hook the device to your belt?!?!
SS

I agree with SS. I have a 64gb CF card and a 64gb SD card in each of my cameras and am no where near filling them up on the tour. Ofcourse there's always the possibility of losing the camera and the images with it....

Has anybody on here ever heard of or been to LEH LADAKH WHICH IS PART OF NW INDIA?? ..........

Hello; I was there this past September on a tour to this region ... here are the links to my albums in case you are interested in seeing them. A spectacularly scenic area of India fairly close to the Pakistani and Chinese border. The road signs are very catchy in this area.

Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa:

Signs, signs and more signs:
Sorry for the crappy quality of the pictures shot from a moving vehicle and through dirty window glass, nonetheless the area had abundant number of cute road signs that made the drive interesting just looking out for them in addition to the scenery.

Hello photographers,

I am thinking of upgrading my 7D to a 7D Mark II or the Canon 6D. Do any of you know all three cameras? Do you see a noticeable difference between the 7D and 7D mark II? Is the 6D much better than the 7D II for portraits and landscapes? (I can't afford the 5d camera series).

I photograph birds, landscapes, citiscapes, flowers, people, wildlife, portraits, do photojournalism--in other words, I am not limited to one area. I am currently deciding between the sigma 18-35 Art lens or one of the canon wide lenses (probably the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS) and since the sigma won't work on a full frame, I am figuring out ahead of time the lens that will match my future upgraded camera. The other lens in my future is the canon 100-400II.

Thanks for your input!

I moved from the 7D to the 7D2 and very happy with the transition. That with the 100-400 II is a great combination for action work - the fast focusssing is a tough combination to beat. I have no personal experience with the 6D but reports suggest that it is a great camera for low light work. Perhaps have you looked into getting a used 5D3? With the model 4 out, there are a lot of good buys on used bodies out there. Though for action work the 7D2 combo with the 100-400 works great, the 5D3 might be more generally useful for most circumstances and especially with wider lenses.

For all you Canon Shooters I have a question for you: Not counting telephoto lenses, what is your very favorite lens and why?

For me the most used lens in my arsenal is the 24-105 4.0L. It's the most versatile travel lens I have, which includes the 24-70 2.8LII, 70-200 2.8LII, 100-400 L II and the 85 1.2LII. and I like to shoot a lot of travel photography. The longer lenses tend to go the the 7d2 and the shorter ones on the 5D3, though this not always and more as to what the situation calls for. The only lens I had and didn't care much for, was the 16-35 2.8LII - perhaps it was the copy I had or operator incompetence ... it just wasn't right for me.
