Thanks for the input everyone. I've spent some time watching youtube videos about super telephoto primes. Pretty sure I've eliminated the 400. I will be renting all three to try them out before I make my final decision.
So if you could choose between the latest generation of Nikon 400mm, 500mm and 600mm which would you choose? The 400 is an f2.8 while the 500 and 600 are f4's. The chosen one will be used on a D500 and D850 with or without a 1.4 TC III. While I won't say money is no object they are all within $2k of each other. I guess my main dilema is the 2.8 vs 4.
This lens will be used for wildlife; mammals and birds, mainly from a blind.
Probably not but we have managed to import into a folder say 2014 in Lightroom and somehow ended up putting the 2017 folder under 2014, so our 2017 folder was empty, the 2014 folders had them all. Check to see if you have 2017 folders under one of your other years.
This is what happened on my wife's computer when she was learning Lightroom earlier this year.
Have you checked the external outside of Lightroom to make sure the photos are where you thought they were, if they are, then check to make sure that your user name has read rights for that folder that LR is not seeing.
And you are right if you re-import you will lose your edits.

Thanks Happy Sailor. Yes, the photos are on the external drive. I can see them in Finder.
Purchased a new iMac to replace my MacBook. Subscribe to LR Classic and PS and downloaded without a hitch. Here is my problem. I had a bunch of folders on an external drive since the MacBook internal HD was short on space. There were folders for each year on the external drive. Opened LR on the new iMac and started to move the folders from the external to the internal drive. All folders moved perfectly except the 2017 folders. The basic folder tree is the main folder for the year then sub folders with the date of the pictures. The external drive shows with all the folders but when I click on them they indicate there are photos but they show as blanks. I know they are photos I have pp'd in LR as the flags are indicated as I assigned them. If I look at the folders in Finder all the photos can be seen as processed with the xmp files. Why oh why can't LR find/see them? There are no !/? On any of the folders in LR.
Anybody have any ideas I can try to get them to show in LR. I supposed I can re-import but won't I lose my edits?
Thanks for any light that can be shed on my problem.
The Maine moose population has been hit hard the past few years by winter ticks. The population is down significantly from what it used to be. That said I have had luck seeing moose in the Rangley and Stratton areas. Route 201 between The Forks and Jackman is also an area I have had success.
You spend $2K on a crop sensor camera and are now looking for a cheap flash? Wow!
I might use it 3 or 4 times a year. I never said cheap flash. The fact that I am frugal and don't always buy top of the line allows me to afford the D500. Not that it's any of your business!
If you don't mind buying used, some of the earlier Nikon units like the SB800 and SB600 can be found on EBay for a fraction of their original price. I have been using both with my D610 for several years now with no problems. They also sync perfectly with Nikon's CLS system.
Thanks for the info. Will check EBay and other "used/refurb" sources.
