Nothing combines innocence, beauty and the best found in humanity more than a child.

Dad lost his right arm on Okinawa in June 1945, four months after I was born. I never gave it much thought growing up until I saw him holding me as a newborn with two arms. It seemed the strangest thing I had ever seen at the time. Though we lost him in 2010 at age 89, there are no words that can describe the respect and honor I feel for him or for his generation. My own 28 years of service does not come close to repaying the debt I feel for those who answered the call when this country needed them most.

Gene, if my estimates are correct, the greatest generation was having children right up until the 1960’s.

I would suggest that anyone interested in this topic read the Book of Mormon, an account of civilizations that existed in this part of the world between 600 BC and 400 AD.

Being from Vermont and moving to Kentucky, I have found this discussion fascinating. A neighbor just had 40' of wall constructed as a landscaping feature and I believe that I paid less for my first house. Not mentioned are the walls that meander through forests that at one time were fields. This may not be unique to New England, but I have not seen it elsewhere.

For what it’s worth- Quality of life, happiness and the effects that a behavior, action or lifestyle has on others is at the heart of whether or not to legalize or criminalize anything. Personally, I am not for or against legalization of pot at this moment, but do urge the taking of responsibility for all consequences. Some are going to benefit while others may pay a heavy toll. In general I see quality of life suffers when an individual places greater value on anything more important to them than personal health, family health and the health of society.

At age 73 and retired for 7 years, I have enjoyed the many responses and think that most are excellent. My own father, now gone, offered me the following advice which I treasure: Do what you want to do NOW for in a few more years you may no longer want to do it or be able to do it.

Not to be controversial, but ‘the proof of the pudding is in the tasting’. Likewise photographic images are judged by the viewers. Whether or not the photographer had to work, anguish or delight in the process is immaterial. Do whatever feels good/right/best, but strive for the quality capture that offers the finest ‘taste’.

Jerry, I use a pellet stove to heat my 23’ by 23’ woodworking shop here in Vermont. With good insulation I average 3 tons ( 3 pallets/ 150 40lb bags) over the winter. You might use only 2 tons on Long Island. My stove is the basic $1,000 model sold under several names and available at Home Depot,. . . For a quieter model of higher quality get a Harlan, but expect to pay considerably more. Personally, I have found little difference between various pellet brands. Lastly, while pellets are less work than burning wood, in a home office I don’t see how you can do much better than natural gas or propane for cleanliness and ease of use.

While every sport has its fans and its detractors, it cannot be denied that soccer opens the door to more athletes of all sizes and economic groups than any other. As youth programs continue to grow so will popularity in the U.S. Time will tell for there are no limitations to impede participation such as we see in football, tennis, skiing, swimming, basketball, . . . .

As an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster, . . . I have no problem with the participation of girls in Scouting. What I do take issue with is the lack of truth in announcing this change. The truth is that on May 12, 2017, the largest sponsor of Boy Scout troops in the U.S. withdrew itself along with 185,000 Scouts from Boy Scouts of America after much effort to resolve differences.

Mormon church severs some of its ties to the Boy Scouts. SALT LAKE CITY – The Mormon church, the biggest sponsor of Boy Scout troops in the United States, announced Thursday it is pulling as many as 185,000 older youths from the organization as part of an effort to start its own scouting-like program.May 12, 2017.

Foliage is already beginning to turn (9/16). A few suggestions: make sure you have reservations for lodging; you might enjoy the Hero Islands on Lake Champlain just north of Burlington; for fun drive through Smugglers Notch as you leave Stowe; the East Side in Newport on Lake Memphremagog is a great place for lunch; lastly, bring a sweater and jacket since it could be 30˚or 80˚ on any given day.
