This thread is beginning to sound a don't go commentary, show me a place without some risks and we'll call it "Nirvana" or "Utopia"
Workhorse, if you have an IPod or IPad, Apple do a freebie APPS called "Discover Australia" it's worth a look as it covers a lot of territory.
I've been to the USA many, many (32)times, never had an unpleasant experience with the people or "critters" up there, so you and the missus come on down, you will love it!! you don't have to try Vegimite, after all it is made by KRAFT, thats American, is'nt it?

Hi, before you contemplate a visit "Down Under", and you may have already done some, but bear in mind the size of our country,It's an island but it is almost the the same mass as mainland USA, ie drive from LAX - NYC its almost the same as Perth to Sydney. LOOOOng way! Gas here is $1.52 Quarter gallon. Sure there are plenty Golden arches, KFC and other fast food, restrauants are more expensive than USA as ar most attractions, we lack population so things are more expensive, but we make up for it in our attractions and our friendly people.
Time of year depends on your more specific interests. Wildflower season is at its peak July to November, but is an all year display. We have more snow than Switzerland, but only in winter! We cater for people with mobility problems as good as any where else, certainly the USA! Wildlife is where you find it, and that generally means looking for it, it's a big country. Barrier reef, rainforrest North Queensland, June-Oct. Tasmania, Summertime
beautiful landscape/seascape country. You will Not cover it all in one vacation. If I can help you can contact me on

It has been suggested that I should perhaps purchase a "Flash" speedlite unit to complement my camera bag.

The "War Office" has tacitly agreed and so I am looking at the following units:
Canon 430ex II, Nissin Di 622 II and Nissin MF18. Ive long had a hankering for the Canon MR 14EX but sadly, thats not in the war budget.

Main use would be for Macro and my big concern is for simplicity of use/understanding.

Any thought based on experience would be appreciated.

For lighting a macro subject, you will either need a ring flash (MF18) or a way to direct light onto the subject (off-camera cord, slave, reflector, etc.). Maybe the War Department could authorize the additional cost of the Canon MR 14EX by redirecting discretionary or public policy funds; the government does it all the time.

Your suggestions will carry more weight if you can show:
1.) photographs of your macro set-up (camera + lens + illumination source); and
2.) examples of your macro-photography, using your macro set-up.

My macro set-up is here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html#511426
Examples of my macro-photography are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nikonian72
My macro-illumination is a common Nikon SB-600 speedlight ($200) & an O-Flash attachment ($30).

I have the MR EX14,,,and get along pretty well with it. However, if I had to do it all over,,,I'd go with what Nikoian72 suggests, as I have several speedlights. Buy a speedlight and an O flash. You'll get more mileage that way.

I am leaning towards this solution, certainly gives more flexibility with equipment and would be affordable. Thanks, Tradscot.

Many thanks to you both for your help and advice.
Any thoughts on a "not too expensive, but adequate" speedlite might be?

You are off to a strong start.
These are close-up photographs, not quite macros. A true macro image will depict a subject exactly the same size on the sensor as in life. This is called 1:1 magnification (life-size).
Move closer, or crop tighter to obtain additional images at 1:1 mag. Often, more illumination is required for higher magnification images.
Thank you for your comments, like I said, lessons to be learned.
No, I don't have or will I, be getting a speedlight, too many years behind and not enough in front plus the budget got "blown" on the camera, so, I guess I will have to make do with Mother Nature and a mirror or two.
Nikorian72, I will endeavour to comply with the data info as best as I can.
Is there a "rule of thumb" easy way of determining the 1.1 macro rule without getting overly technical?
Once again thanks for your reply. Tradscot.

Managed to get my new 60d camera out of the box and found the on/off switch. My first time photographing insects, have done flowers with film years ago thought I give insects a go. I would appreciate any advice on offer.
I used Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro, cable release and of course a tripod and the new camera.

We, on the North East coast of Australia will soon have a full solar eclipse (Nov13) and I wouild like to try for some meaningful exposures. Never tried it before and probably wont get another chance later. Has anybody have some (not too technical) advice that I could apply?
My equipment is a Canon 60d and a Tamron 18-270mm lens, both only a week old, a Canon 70-300mm is usm lens and a 100mm 2.8mm macro, suspect that will of no use!!!!.A tripod, cable release and an alarm clock so I can get out of bed in time! any thoughts?
Thanks, Tradscot
