In some respects it is like what came first? The chicken or the egg? Poor schools= poorly educated kids. Under educated young people= first to be laid-off in a recession. All of this feeds into a desperate condition creating a poverty of economics and a poverty of spirit.Crime rises, drug use escalates= prisons overflow. This article sadly states the fact that we spend more money on incarceration than schooling!!!! Well nourished well educated children are our hope for realizing a healthy prosperous future for our country.

phcaan Listen fellow...I gave four years to the US Navy and the United States. During those years, I was, like all others in the service of this country, expected to do what I was told without any questions, in the defense of this country. I have read Marx and the thoughts and ideas of many people. You come across as ignorant. There is no harm in knowledge, but I don't think that you know anything about that. So, on the eve of the Fourth of July, know that many have died to assure that you have the opportunity to say wh**ever comes into your head, however insulting, crass or just plain ignorant.

Sorry, but that fundamentalist Christian thought that her religious upbringing gave her the right to deny two fellow citizens their rights. How long will it take before people realize that they can have the most screwed up beliefs [that is one of America's strengths: we guarantee the right to anyone to have the wackiest off the wall f*cked up '''religion"]...Scientology? anyone? BUT keep your screwball i***tic weirdness to yourself and do your job. Refusing to administer your legal authority to someone that you don't agree with is unmitigated bulls**t. If you think you are within your rights to do so..then I think that you have just spit on our Bill of Rights. If you want a concise appraisal of religion, I encourage you to read the words of Karl Marx.

Please do us the favor of defining 'Liberalism' as you know it. Also it might be interesting to hear just how you would set things up. You may have some good ideas.

Sometime ago, on a PBS TV program called 'Ethics and Religion' five college students were in a discussion group where they talked about their own and each other's religious beliefs. Sounds good so far. What could possibly be wrong in knowing more about your fellow believers? A Catholic, a Jew, a Protestant, A Hindi [as I recall] and a Muslim. Everything seemed to going well, understanding was improving and there seemed to be tranquility...until one young woman asked the young man who embraced the Muslim faith about the 70 virgins reward upon entering heaven. He immediately became defensive and his face reddened as he angrily explained his 't***h'. If you, dear reader, think that religion makes for a better world, where defending one's imaginary ideas and giving one's life to either protect those absurd imaginations or as is more often the case: k**l those who disagree, then this historical rollercoaster of k*****g and maiming and burning will continue.
In a nutshell: freedom FROM religion rather than freedom OF religion.

We accept standards of safety for automobiles. Cars must meet minimum standards which protect the driver and occupants. Brakes are a basic requirement. Windshield wipers are too deemed important. The list is long and comprehensive and we more or less accept these requirements because they insure a minimum chance of survival.
So why not a standard for religions? Just think what a code of ethics [although I'm not convinced that with the long history of bloody religious wars that 'ethics ' is the right word] would do for calming the raging seas of disparate religions. Crackpot ideas about covering women from head to toe would fail the test. Stoning and beheading would become a thing of the past. Well, you get the idea. Oh, and little boys could comfortably shake the hand of a woman because they no longer were being taught i***tic drivel. Just a thought.

Here we go again. A nice story about humans figuring out a way to comfort a bereaved mother tiger. That is the story..pure and simple. Some deduce that since the tiger accepts the piglets as a reasonable substitute for her own, we humans therefore can get along. Nice idea. History has shown that we humans don't really get along, but the idea is appealing just the same. Now someone declares that this whole story proves that there is a God. Where did that come from?? Superstition, voodoo, make-believe and general ignorance has done more to feed the fires of hatred and mass killings than anyone should be comfortable with. Just a thought: if you want to truly get along , dump the make-believe bullshit.

Thanks for giving us a peek into what 'reality' will soon become. It seems that any incident today or fifty years ago can be manipulated to give 'proof' of its validity. The film Forrest Gump was a good example some time ago. The propagandists of old would have given their eye teeth for this opportunity for rewriting history. What will become of this? I shudder to think!

raferrelljr: Thanks for taking a simple joke and turning it into your opportunity to express your loathing for Clinton. I hope that your day improves. By the way, now that you mention it, I have to assume that you'll be voting for the Donald. Or maybe you are the type who won't vote, which is the same as voting for Trump.
