Raptor.....

This what I believe is a Coopers hawk that usually nests
in the eucalyptus trees across the street. Today he/she stopped
by the trees in my neighbors yard for Easter. Lighting is not great, but I'll take
what I can get...

Chiming in a bit late, however I picked up a used 300L IS USM first version for $2,000.00 last year. Bought the 1.4 III and 2x III extender. So far, I really like the results.
A bit older and heavier than the II however very fast AF and sharp images.
Satisfies my needs, for now.....

All good thoughts! Thank you all for you input. I know it's expensive, but so is life and... I like to capture the moments when I can with a CAMERA!! Not a cell phone with an infinity focused lens.
It's almost as if the Buck Rogers era has been upon us for a while. The wrist watch phone... it's here, well a companion to the cell host but it's here! My Great Grandmother was born in
1904. Horse drawn wagon, motor car, airplane (sorta) back then. We lost her in 1999 at 95 years old. I ponder how she grew up through all the inventions and two world wars. I'm rambling again!!! LOL
One day/year, I will get that lens!
Thanks again all, and stay Healthy...... Darren
P.S. - she did get to meet her great great grandson also briefly. My son who just turned 21 today! YIKES!! Thank god all the bars are closed..!!!

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent lens for the price. It was a bit better on the Canon 80D crop sensor. Had to sell that camera to get the 5DMIV when B&H had a sale i couldn't resist.... Lol...

The shots were taken to show the clarity of the lens. There has been a lot of talk about this particular glass. I am not offering the images to magazines. As for the clarity you're looking for, If the lens isn't giving you the clarity it's capable of, it is either defective or you haven't yet used the tap-in console to resolve the problem.

Incidentally, I was shooting from a balcony quite far from the action, and there were many surfers. Impossible to get to the guy and didn't even realize the quality of the shots until an hour after the shoot when I finally got a look at them.

I did get it better with FoCal but that is only at 150 and 600 because the micro adjust in camera only does two points. Have not had time to do a full Tap in yet. That will take a bit of time......

I'm really loving my Tamron 150-600mm G2 zoom mounted on my Nikon D500.
I've been in Narragansett, overlooking the beach from across the road on a balcony, watching the surfboarders do their dance with the waves. Shooting at cH, I took several series of spills. Here is a series of three shots showing a surfer as he endures a loss against the waves. I was at least a thousand feet from the action shooting at manual exposure, ISO 2500 at 1/1250th of a second at f/6.3 at 600mm. I cropped to isolate the action, and on the 2nd and 3rd shots deliberately darkened the whole scene, then selected the surfer and lightened up his face and body. As I said, I LOVE this lens!

BTW... Nice shots! My Tamy G2 canon mount is not even close in clarity..

Did he know you were shooting him/give you permission to use his image?

Seriously? Is this just not another day at the beach with a camera..?. Which are closed in California now btw... As are all city(town) parking lots, hiking trails. ponds, lakes ,airport, camp grounds and swamps etc... It's just like my trash cans on the curb! Think about that! As soon as the cans reach the curb, they are public domain!

Hell, they just shut down everything here.... Parks, trails, city(town) parking lots, and the beach. I live a bit north in Fallbrook watching the stupidity.! Don't get started on the Democratic government...

Yep, just to add that there are several versions of the 300 f2.8L, and the price varies widely. My son bought a non IS version in excellent condition (just some scuffs on the built-in hood) for $1300 from KEH - it is a beast!

Yeah, did a little homework myself. It's still a MAJOR investment. Really decent is still 4500ish. New is around 6099. Can't do new right now, or used for that point. I still have a bit to learn, but i know you have to have quality equipment that will last. I am a custom framing and finish carpenter, so I know tools. But, i can make a better cut say with a homeowners crappy saw than he can. Just because i've been doing it for over thirty years. Use the the tool, don't abuse the tool. It only cuts at one speed safely LOL. Sorry for rambling.
One day I will have one though. Bless all ya all, and stay healthy..!!!
