The Nikon 24-120 works well for me under the same venue descriptions. Its major advantage for me is that its range reduces the number of times that i may have to change lenses. Adorama sells it for just under $1,100, so it is above your limit.

I've watched a number of YouTube videos on this lens, and it is very appealing. Just a matter of whether I want to spend that kind of money. There are also used/renewed lenses available, but I doubt that I would go that route.

Thanks for all your ideas and suggestions.

I have shot many basketball games in the same venue conditions. Post film days, i have used Nikon D700, D500 and occasionally D750 Cameras. The two best lenses have been 80-200 f2.8 and 24-120 f4 Nikon zooms. For a new lens, i highly recommend the 24-120; it does it all at floor-level shots. The D500 is my camera of choice.

Thank you! That 24-120 looks very interesting. I’m going to do some research on that one.

Well, that was certainly a wide variety of responses, a full 5 pages worth. Thank you so much for your input and ideas. I’ve read through all of them, and this is how I’m going to proceed: I’m going to save the $1,000 ish and use the 2 really good lenses I have now-the 24-70 and 70-200. At games where I can be close to the action, the 24-70 should be great, and for times when I have to be further away, the 70-200 will also work great.

Again, thanks for the help.

Basketball for grade/middle/high school is getting started. I have grandkids at all levels and truly enjoy shooting their games. It’s a great way for me to stay connected with them. Some of the games are in old very poorly lit gyms. I shoot with the Nikon D500 and have used the following lenses: TAMRON 18-400: Overall, I like this lens, but I really don’t like what I get in low light situations. Tamron 70-200: Works well in low light, but very difficult to get close up shots. Tamron 24-70: also good in low light, but I’m limited with the longer shots that then require a lot of cropping. I’d be very interested in hearing some lens suggestions for shooting indoors. Thanks in advance. Budget? $1,000-ish.

A very lovely gal, Bill. And she definitely looks like she is sorry in the last pic. Nicely done!

Thank you! I’m very happy to have her around.

oh these shots are wonderful of the pear thief...you caught her in the act...excellent job.
the squirrels eat ours...take one bite and throw them on the ground...maybe the deer
finish them up.

She was eating the whole thing, including a little twig that was attached. It sure saves me a lot of cleanup work.

Thanks. I watched her eat about 5-6. I hope she keeps coming back.

Well, she has good taste. These are much tastier than grass.

I’ve had a couple. They’re pretty good.

I have a pear tree in my backyard, and the pears have begun to fall. Except there are no pears to be found on the ground. I suspected raccoons or squirrels, but I spotted the culprit this afternoon. A few shots of the feeding frenzy, and one final when she saw me.

It was just on the path that circles the marsh. Kinda heading south. My grandson spotted it first, and we were excited to see something like that for the first time.
