Well I suppose that’s true but it’s also true that any shot taken in manual mode (flash or non flash) requires forethought and understanding of settings, etc. I use TTL about 25% of the time. I like the control of manual since I’m rarely in a situation where I can’t pre-flash first. Back in the film days however, I used auto most of the time since it took a week or so to get my results back. It was risky to not see the image right away. Instant feedback of digital has allowed us all to be better photographers faster.

Manual flash is no harder than adjusting the volume on your radio. Your view screen is equivalent to your ears. Turn up the flash power to lighten, turn down to darken. Unless you are tying to determine precise mathematical light ratios for multiple units it’s as simple as that.

One of the few jazz musicians I truly admire. Listened to the whole album but scared my wife away. Thanks for sharing a real gem.

Try charging the battery and leave it out of the camera. See if it loses power at the same rate after 3 weeks.

What could I have done to make this portrait better

The single light source you used created a deep low key effect that I like for this portrait. I assume that was your intent. Having said that, bringing up shadow areas with a reflector or fill light would be more to my liking. You could also bring them up in post. Just my subjective opinion. Nice job.

Bridge does not now and never has had editing features, but it has never been a problem for me to open Photoshop or Camera Raw to make some changes. Just selecting and tapping "Enter," or double-clicking a thumbnail in Bridge opens the image in Photoshop instantly with no importing/exporting necessary. I know that for many people one extra keystroke can be a waste of time, but I am not that in that big a hurry, thank goodness.

For occasional edits of a few images, yes PS is fine working from bridge. But when I have hundreds of files to edit I like LR and use it all the time for most of my work using RAW files. When I shoot sports I am most often shooting jpeg and would like a faster workflow that eliminated the import/export feature, while doubling file space with two copies of every image. There must be others that feel the same way. Maybe the folks at Adobe will incorporate that into LR or Bridge someday.

You can change the file associations in Bridge if you go to the 'Preferences', 'File Type Associations'. You can designate some program other than Photoshop to open a particular type of file.

Good to know, thanks. I just wish editing could be done directly in Bridge or LR.

Too bad this feature isn’t available in LR Classic. Sometimes when working with jpeg’s I just want to quickly do minor edits without importing/exporting or having to open in PS like you have to in Bridge. It would save a lot of time with an acceptable loss factor for me. If I’m wrong about Bridge someone let me know.

I use a Flash Bender 3 from Rogue Flash. You can fold it forward to send light most light straight to the subject, or fold it backward to send more light to a ceiling. I like the control it gives me when I can't use off camera flash or bounce off walls. They make a few different sizes but I use the small one as the large ones get a bit unruly on top of the camera.

The color checkers I have tried never give me WB that I still don't have to tweak anyway, so why bother with them. I just eyeball the WB while adjusting Kelvin and tint as needed. In situations with mixed lighting I most often use auto WB and tweak in post. Proper color will always be subjective. Some like it warm, some like it cold. Go with what you like for any particular scene.

My RF 100 2.8 may be fixed at 2.8 but it does not deliver a consistent exposure throughout its focus range. As you move closer and focus closer to an object you must either open the aperture or slow the shutter speed to compensate. Similar to bellows extension factor with a view camera. Could this lens be consistent throughout its entire focus range? Perhaps that is what is implied.

I assume my EF 85mm 1.2 is weather sealed but it has developed what looks like a fungus spot on the inside of the rear element. It has only been in wet environments a couple times briefly. So much for weatherproofing.

I used to leave a second SD 256 gig card in my R5 until it filled (as a backup) and only use the primary CF Express for downloading regular jobs until I noticed the camera lagging on startup. I assume the camera has to sort through and calculate the total before it can fully engage. I stopped doing it and now just format both cards before every job.
