My first digital camera was one of the Kodak point and shoots in 2003-2004. Something like $260 I believe. I used it to photograph breeding livestock then email the image to the potential customer. About the same time we got a Sony Mavica at work with its floppy disk that would hold an astounding 6 images! I think it was like $700! 2006 i upgraded to a Fuji S5100. Cool camera but slow focusing made it useless for anything moving. For Christmas 2007 my kids gave me a Nikon D40. $450-475 I think. That’s when I found that digital cameras could actually be competent devices.

My first digital camera was a Casio bought in 1999, and I've had GAS every since.

FastStone and you can compare up to four images at once.

Impressive job! Thanks for pointing out the colorize neural filter as a way to bring life to a dull faded out photo.

I am a relative new convert to the Olympus M43 system. I have been a Nikon user since my teenage years many, many years ago. My most recent Nikon cameras are the 850 and 500 and am so far still in possession of them. I've been slowly selling off the Nikon lenses which I have somewhat duplicated with the Olympus system. The new OM-1 is on preorder.

My question to all the HH is why do you think Olympus or OM System cameras are rarely listed in most "best of.."
cameras or lens systems? I have been very happy with my Olympus OM-E1-Mark 3 and I primarily do wildlife and landscape/abandoned. The entire system, other than the pro 150-400mm lens, is a pleasure for their weight. I can use the camera for hours without tiring. I find that frequently people snub this system --which I am taking a risk and assuming pertains to the Lumix GH M43 systems as well. Once you learn the Olympus system--and there is a learning curve--
the images are great. I can produce large size photos and the camera is only 20MP. I look forward to all the advancements the OM-1 promises to be.

So-please explain to me (in a nice manner) why photographers seem to feel other systems are far superior to Olympus.
TIA for the input.

It is true that the specs show that a full frame dslr has better dynamic range and low light sensitivity, but
when comparing photos taken with my D750 vs the Oly EM-1 the only difference my old eyes can see is bokeh.
Olympus is my go to camera unless the light is bad.

Well folks, I was almost done posting godan1's trucks when disaster struck. I was trying to run a backup for Lightroom, but it wouldn't work. It said I needed more room. So, I started deleting old backups and when I got to the 3rd to the most recent one ... I lost all the photos & info in Lightroom. I don't know that happened, I still had two more recent backups.

When I tried using either of them a window popped up and said "assertion failed". Still working on it, so far to no avail.

I have an older backup on a Toshiba external hard drive that does load all my folders back into Lightroom, but the empty photo slots don't connect to my photos on the internal G hard drive.

Any advice would be helpful.

I have been enjoying your posts, too. The good news is that your photos are probably still there -- it's only the catalog that's screwed up. Hopefully a Lightroom guru can help you out.

Have a request in with Topaz help but wanted to ask UHH if anyone else is having this problem. In the middle of a project, I started getting trial versions of sharpen and denoise AI programs. Fine, just have to log back in happened before. That didn't work so I tried to reset my password. This did not work, still couldn't log back in. Tried several times in case I mistyped ...to no avail. Thanks for any comments you may have!

Same thing happened to me with Sharpen AI. I contacted support and they answered later that day or maybe it was the next day. They said their verification server was busticated, and they sent me a link to download the latest version.

I moved to the Olympus MFT system a couple of years ago and have enjoyed it overall; however, one drawback I've encountered is noise in low-light situations using higher ISO (of course). I've seen quite a few people online mention the wonders of Topaz DeNoise AI, and I'm wanting feedback from the UHH members who've actually tried it or use it. I did search the forum and saw discussion from as recent as a year ago--some liked the old DeNoise 6 better than the AI at that time (though I understand the v6 is discontinued); but has AI improved over the past year? I should mention that I do have Affinity Photo which comes with a noise filter, but I haven't been able to produce significant improvements with it (maybe due to inexperience/incompetence, haha). So does anyone here think DeNoise AI is truly amazing, or not so much?

I do realize that Topaz offers a 2-week trial, btw, but I've read where people say AI is more complicated to use than the v6, and I'm not sure at my recreational level that I'd be able to master the learning curve in time to make a good judgment in that time frame; thus I'm soliciting opinions.

Thanks!
Kevin

I've found that both Topaz DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI are amazing and easy to use. The one time I needed support from Topaz, they were excellent.

I'm a hiker/backpacker looking to buy a mirrorless camera - size and weight are important consideration for me. I'm seriously thinking of an Olympus OMD as they are weather-sealed and have in-body stabilization (I shoot exclusively hand held). Any words of wisdom from users or ex-users would be appreciated

If you are shooting prime lenses, there isn't a lot of difference in terms of weight. My Nikon D750 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens weighs 2.4 lbs compared to the Oly EM1 with a 25mm f/1.8 lens at 1.7 lbs. The difference comes into play with longer zoom lenses. The D750 with a Sigma 100-400mm weighs 4.9 lbs as opposed to the Oly with a 75-300mm lens at 2.4 lbs. I think only the Oly Pro lenses are weather sealed, and they weigh more. Olympus has a lot of lenses to choose from.

Going on a cruise end of February til mid March of '22. Considering that the photography is going to be of most everything ( people, places and things from near to far). Trying to pack light as possible, no tripod, what lenses should I consider taking (Nikon D7200). Available lenses, Nikon 16-85, 70-200, 50-300, 50mm and Tamron 16-300. I'm going to try to stay off Auto. I recently retired, got into photography to stay busy not quite three years ago, so I have a lot to learn and could use advise to make this bucket list trip memorable. Thanks everyone in advance.

Depends on where you are going. After 28 cruises, my Oly 12-40 (24-80mm equiv) has been my most used lens. If going to Alaska, a long telephoto would be second. If going to the Baltic etc., a wide angle like a 7-14mm (14-28mm equiv) would be second. When shooting a Nikon DX camera, the 18-200mm was my most used lens.

Do you still own your first real/serious camera? (Add a pic!)
Do you still use it?

Early on I couldn't afford a big name brand so started off with this Ricoh. No regrets. The Ricoh KR-10M served it's purpose and was a great little camera. I haven't used it for decades but I'm going to give it a run sometime soon.
The KR-10M had quite good specification for the time. The kit lens pictured was also a reasonable performer.

(Photo below taken on my phone. Phones are good for stuff like this!)

It was a Wardflex twin lens reflex. I think it was a Yashica dressed in Monkey Wards clothing. This is all I have left of it, and don't know why I kept it. It does demonstrate how the aperture clamps down when you release the shutter though. First real SLR was a Miranda Sensorex with a 50mm f/1.4 -- long gone.

Puddle Pirate -- love it! It was the Draft Dodgers Yacht Club way back when I was in. My Olympus EM1 will let you record a voice message with each picture if you want to.

Just curious to know whether anyone has experience with Neewer photo equipment. Having perused their web site, I find their tripods, gimbals, ball heads etc to be rather less expensive so was wondering about quality of their products. Any experience? Satisfied customer - yes/no?

I have a couple of their tripods and am totally satisfied.
