Is there a way to verify a light meter is indicating in line with an accepted standard?

-----
You can use an 18% gray card to check the accuracy of the meter.

I’m getting peppered with advertisements for ON1 Photo Raw 2024. Seems like it’s similar to Luminar Neo. Has anyone had any experience with ON1 and especially the 2024 V. yet? If so, how would you rate it and the learning curve, ease of use?

----------------------
I have been using ON1 Photo RAW for as long as it has existed, 8 years (2017-2024). ON1 is my primary editor, replacing Lightroom and Photoshop. I also use Affinity Photo. I have tried every version of Luminar starting with Luminar 2018 which was the first version that would run on Windows. I was disappointed in most of them, except for Luminar 4 and Luminar AI. I have tried Luminar Neo on my brother's computer and did not like it.

I recommend ON1 Photo RAW the most and I also recommend Affinity Photo in place of Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop Elements is also a good editor especially if you also get the "Elements+" add-on (it is only $12) to go with Elements.

Looking for advice on selecting EV values to use for different subjects, and is there a good middle of the road value for acceptable brightness when in doubt

--------
Simple answer, "No". The brightness adjustments needed varies with the subject and what the lighting conditions are at that time and at that specific location.

I understand that prime lenses usually offer higher image quality. But given the fact that people use smart phones to take pics these days and quality seems to be good enough, does it even matter that primes offer slight advantage while having major disadvantage of fixed focal length?

Do you still use primes at all? For what purpose?

I still use prime lenses half or more of the time because, like you mentioned, they are usually sharper. Quality being good enough is subjective since opinions on what constitutes good enough varies. Phone cameras have been getting better but I don't feel they are as good as DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras.

I recently purchase a new desk top computer in order to use lightroom with all the new features. My computer was 13 years old. I realize things have changed but now my external hard drive with all my photos don't want to work on it. External drive is 6 years old? Too old for new computer,(I guess?)). Everything is pointing to cloud service that cost more and more. How is everyone handling there photos these days? Are you going to the clouds?

----
I don't personally use cloud space for storing photos. I have backup external drives for storage and burn some to DVDs also.

I would like to find a very simple photo editing software program, on cd-rom for Mac computer. Really it has to be very simple program because I have mental block when it comes to computers. I don’t like email formats. I take photos of my family and friends and some landscapes, I just want to improve the quality of my photos and erase unwanted images. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For a simple editor you could try FastStone Image Viewer. It is free and does offer simple adjustments and it us easy to use. Here is the FastStone site:

If by BBF you mean back button focus, the Nikons lower on the food chain don’t have that feature.

Sometimes it helps to actually spell things out. It wasn’t until a few years back that I even knew there was such a feature. It wasn’t until I got my D800 that I ever had the chance to use one.

For example, I can tell you that to set up a dumpy (level) you add the BS to the TBM to get the HI and subtract the FS from the HI to get the ELV. Confusing?

------
Back button focus can be and is used by people on the lower end cameras by reassigning the AE-L/AF-L button on the back to function as an Autofocus button, removing the function from the shutter release button.

Need a little help… seems like I’ve forgotten something Tell me if I’m correct and if not please set me straight
Attempting to get the detail of the subject against the background
1. Light (white, creme etc) subject against a dark background equal a negative ex comp
2. Light subject against light background equal a zero or plus exp comp
3. Dark subject against dark background equals plus exp comp
4. Dark subject against lighter or bright background equals a zero or minus exp comp
5. Subject in front of a bright or dark no curtained window equals a negative exp comp.
Thanks for setting me straight

Take a shot and look at it. Ig it is too dark use some +exposure compensation if it is too light use some -exposure compensation. You can't make a generic rule and count on it working correctly in all situations.

Wondering if the Nikon 16-80mm 2.8-4E would be a good replacement for the older 24mm 2.8 and 35-70mm 2.8 AF Nikkors I've been using for years. My primary camera is a D500. I'm assuming the 4 means it has a variable aperture. Thanks in advance.

---------
I don't think it would be a good replacement since the two lenses you have are both f:/2.8 at all focal lengths.

I've been using a "borrowed" Nikon from my brother for over a year.

The Nikon is a 3400 dsl. I enjoy the camera, but I think I'd like to
move up, just a bit. At first I was saving up to buy the 5700, but I can see that there
are some nice features in the 5600.
This camera would save me a few hundered dollars, that I can put towards a better
telephoto lens.

The reviews are all over the map for the 5600. Does anyone know if there are any
(real issues), against buy the 5600?
I'd appreciate any positive or negative feed back.
I am (far from) being a professional photographer, but have enjoyed photography
and the art of capturing shots, since 1963.

Thanks

If you want to move up, I'd consider a D7100, D7200 or possibly a D7500. All would be a move up from the D3400. Personally I prefer the D7100 or D7200 models. They both have two card slots but the D7500 only has one anf the D7100 and D7200 can be found at a better price.

I just acquired a Canon R3. I also shoot with a Canon 1DX II.
When importing into Photo Mechanic the “Capture” sort is not blending the images together. Instead I get the CR2 images in one block and the CR3 images in another block.
Any ideas on how the get the images sorted by Capture time?

-------
Can you use sort bt filename? What you said you are experiencing sound like it is sorting by file type.

So I am looking at an item on Amazon. It states the seller is Adorama. I have never purchased anything from Adorama. Free shipping and free returns via Amazon is a benefit. Would anyone share their experience please. I did a search on Adorama but the posts were old. Thanks.

--------
I have purchased things from Adorama on multiple occasions, and also from B&H and KEH. I haven't had any problems with any of my purchases from any of them.
