I’ve used a 3 stop ND with outdoor flash in order to open the aperture to 2.8 or wider for shallow DOF. Without it you are forced to shoot 1/200 at ISO 50 with Canon 5D cameras leaving you in the f-8 to f11 range in full sun. The ND isn’t necessary without flash since you have up to 1/8000 shutter speed.
Fantastic. Love the square crop too.
I tinkered with 4x5 a few times back in the day but never got the kind of edge to edge sharpness I get from modern lenses with digital cameras. The only exception was possibly the Fuji 6x17 Pan camera with the 180mm lens.
The R5 allows you to shoot in 1.6 crop sensor mode which I use frequently when shooting sports. I no longer use a TC. With 45 megapixels the 1.6 crop still leaves you with 17. This is more than enough for my purposes and with no f-stop loss it’s totally worth it. Of course I can just crop in post but I don’t usually have the time.
That’s quite a rig. Very cool shot.
This is a good action shot but my guess is it was over exposed and darkened in post with some uneven burning, particularly around the sign in the background. If overexposure is the case I would presume there was uneven lighting in the arena. Auto exposure settings rarely provide even exposure so I would shoot manual and adjust ISO or shutter/aperture as best as possible while following the action. Shoot raw so as to get the most out of exposure variations. If the image was exposed correctly then less processing is in order.
Your image has held my attention longer than any photograph on UHH in recent memory. I love the composition, but mostly the expressions on each subject. It reminds me of an old Life Magazine shot from the 60’s. Really great!
