Nice photos! What ship did you travel on? I assume from your comments a relatively small ship?

My current setup is a Feisol CT-3342 with Acratech GP ball head. I have recently purchased a Nikon 200-500 Lens to use for Wildlife type shooting. I was considering a Full Gimbal. I have been researching and have seen these SideKick Adapters which let you use your current Ballhead like a gimbal.

Does anyone have experience with using these Pros and Cons?

I have the Sidekick I use with my Sony 400 2.8 and converters and it works just fine. I decided on the Sidekick over a standard gimbal primarily for travel when I am shooting wildlife and landscape. It attaches to the ballhead simply and quickly and prevents having to switch tripod heads in the field which is a pain in the butt. Also a little less weight when traveling.
The movements are smooth and precise but panning depends on the quality of your ballhead.
The only thing I am not crazy about is the side mount for the lens foot as opposed to a bottom mount like most gimbal heads use. Just need to be a little more careful when mounting the camera/lens to it.
If I knew that I would be using only a super telephoto and didn’t need a ballhead then I would prefer a gimbal head.
The quality of the locking mechanisms on your ballhead is important when hiking around with your rig over your shoulder so your camera/lens assembly doesn’t flop around due to the weight. My original ballhead was a little too small to prevent this so I bought a bigger ballhead which solved the problem.
For my purposes the Sidekick works quite well.

Good photo but why not bring up the shadows as there is a lot more of interest in this shot than the parasol.
Just my opinion.

This is a very nice photo showing a warm relationship of the dog and his/her dedicated companion. This image would make a great B&W matted and framed for the wall. I am sure the dogs owner would cherish this photo. A dog can be the most loyal loving friend you could ever have. Thanks for posting.

Jay, I have the Sony FE 70-300 and FE 100-400 that I use with my a7rii and a7rlll. I bought the 70-300 before the 100-400 was available. Originally thought I would sell the 70-300 but decided to keep it as I think it is a better walk-around lens as easier to hand-hold since it is smaller and lighter. I have no complaints about this lens. Sharpness and contrast is just fine. I have not used my 1.4 or 2x converters with this lens.

Great photos of an incredibly beautiful bird! I used to hunt pheasants when I was a kid growing up in north Iowa. Back then I didn’t appreciate the beauty of these birds and now I am sorry I ever hunted them. I live in southeastern PA and spend a fair amount of time in the rural areas and have only seen a small handful of pheasants in the last 40 years or so. Now I see more hawks and eagles than pheasants.

The sticky stuff is caused by the outgassing of the plasticizers used in the material to prevent it from becoming brittle, thus keeping it pliable. I have used a citrus based cleaner called Amazing Orange available at Dollar Tree. I used it to remove the greasy, sticky stuff on the surface of my aging vinyl boat curtains with great success with no damage to the clear plastic. This was the only thing I found that worked for my application without using harsh solvents. You may first try some on a corner of a clean cloth and clean a very small spot on your camera body before you proceed. I have not tried it on a camera body. Sounds like you don’t have much to lose by trying it.

Frank, thanks for posting these photos. A good friend who lives in Santa Barbara took me there for dinner about 15 years ago and was a memorable experience. She reserved the table right smack in front of the fireplace, and yes it is a romantic place for dinner. Food was exceptional. I often think of Cold Spring and hope to go back some day. Sorry I didn’t shoot any photos of it when I was there. Enjoyed your photos.
