I took a class on shelter photography. She suggested happy backgrounds and to do your best to have the animal look happy/cute. The more appealing the animal looks, the more likely their adoption.

I try to make them laugh but it is really tough. I use toys and sounds but these poor little fellows have had a hard life before they come to the shelter and not always the easiest to deal with. Also for the background, solid colors and nothing distracting is what I work for. Not always able to shoot with my background just within the "kitty condos". Thanks for your feedback.

Great of you to be volunteering - sad you are getting mauled. Since you asked for comments about the images, I don't find the catchlights in the eyes of #2 & #5 attractive, and it looks like the same light source... something to soften the shape would probably work. No doubt you are too busy defending yourself to worry about such details. Please stay safe and have a Happy New Year.

I have noticed the flash being rather prominent, however, if I don't have a catchlight in the eyes the cats look dead. I don't spend time in post because of the urgency of getting them online, they are online within 2 hours of shooting them. Would reducing the flash size help? This is a softbox. What other ways might serve me better.

Mostly the hands get scratched and bitten. The bites are rare. I have tried work gloves but they don't allow me to use the camera or the toys the way I prefer. The western jacket would be a great help if the arms were much of a problem.

For the past several years my wife and I have volunteered at our local animal shelter. We have been working in the kitty section. After a couple of times being there, I thought that they could use some photos of the kitties to post in order to get more adoptions. It has been really fun and I've learned a considerable amount and continue to experiment. Just recently they have allowed me to bring in some lights and backgrounds. I am not so sure it is worth it. I know that your keen eyes will be able to tell the difference. If you have any suggestions, I would be happy to listen. By the way, almost every week when the leave, I have a few more holes in my arm and blood dripping. The things you do to help.

I appreciate your answer. I have held off purchasing because I thought that it was a subscription.

I used Plus-X and Tri-X developed in Microdol X for 12 minutes at 68 degrees. Great results. Then again I also used Tri-x and developed in Acufine. There was plenty of grain but still was a great way of getting ASA 1200. I also was able to push Acufine and Tri-X to 10000 ASA, not so great results. Using bulk Tri-X was the only way to go then. Thank goodness for the new digital world.

Nice job. I would love to have a video of you taking these pictures. I'll bet it would be better than the pictures and they are great.
I do a lot of cat photography (shelter) and people line up outside the windows to laugh at what is taking place while I take the pictures.

Thank you. I will have to investigate further. We drove through Tenn. on a trip to North Carolina two years ago. I wasn't impressed with western Tenn., but eastern Tenn. really caught my attention.

I refer to west tn as Eastern Arkansas from the Tennessee river to the Memphis.

There is an excellent camera store in Nashville, Durys. btw, there are some great rv campgrounds all around.

I am located in Cookeville. We have 3 Corp of Engineer lakes within 35 minutes, about 6 state parks within an hour and we are only 3 hours from the Smokies. I don't work for the chamber of commerce, just feel fortunate to have been born and raised in this area. Oh, we are also within 100 miles from Knoxville, Nashville, and Chattanooga along I-40.

There is a great camera club here.

If you ever saw the movie Sgt. York, the 1st photo looks like the spot where he did some pondering...

Actually, the #2 pictures is about 10 miles from where Sgt. York lived.
