Standard shutter replacement cost is quoted around $350. Only Canon or an authorized repair facility can confirm their exact pricing.

But seriously, if a shutter did died at age around it's minimum expected life, usage would need to be in the volumes of an average of 1000 images every week for 50 weeks in a year for 4 years ... of course possible, but that's serious heavy usage where I'd expect back-up bodies as well as support / maintenance contracts to also exist for professional-level usage.

You're right about the estimate. I had a shutter failure on my original 7D a few years back at only around 18,000 actuations, but unfortunately for me just a month out of warranty and Canon charged me about $360 to repair it. That too I believe was rated for around 150,000 actuations.

Excellent work. Pittsburgh never looked so inviting while I was living there in the early to mid 70's. Is that shot from Mt. Washington?

A frequent subject is "I need to buy a new computer, what are the the specs best for post processing?" I just ordered a new computer. here's what I bought. It is not a minimum machine. In fact it is what I consider a no compromise machine.

Processor: Intel Core 7th Generation i7-7700 Processor (Quad Core, up to 4.20 GHz, 8MB Cache, 65W)
Windows 10 Home 64bit English
1TB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
256GB PCIe M.2 NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive
16GB DDR4 UDIMM Non-ECC 2400MHz (2x8GB)
8 GB DDR4 UDIMM Non-ECC 2400MHz (2x4GB)
16GB M.2 PCIe Optane Memory
Tray load DVD Drive (Reads and Writes to DVD/CD)
AMD Radeon RX 480 with 8GB GDDR5

Is there a configuration model no. you can share with us? I'd be interested as well.
Thanks.
With the SSD configured as C:/ to give me the extra speed, the 1TB will be D: and used only for data. I get differing opinions about the Optane memory from experts, but Dell already had it in the machine. It is supposed to be a kind of advanced "cache." New Intel technology. I will probably take out the 1TB because I'll be transferring my present two data storage drives which are both only a few months old (And HGST brand) as drive D: and E:. Find some other use for it.

Not bad for under $1,000. Similar machines are available from other manufacturers--though not Apple, even a three times the price.

Actually, after I ordered it, I found essentially the same machine at my local Costco for about $1090. It would have been an excellent choice also.

I'm not looking to sell my work but I'd like to easily share my photos with friends and family. I'd like to allow access for viewing only as well as choosing images I'd allow others to download. It seems like a lot of Hoggers use Smugmug but for an enthusiast is that the best site? What other sites do people use? Are there any free sites or is it worth it to pay for a Smugmug subscription?

I am happy using Google Photos.

.... also ..... it doesn't have to be just your activity that is being mined. Any activity on the main IP address in being tracked and target advertising is directed to other individual IP addresses in the network. For eg., sometimes I am searching for let's say a travel destination on my laptop and suddenly relevant ads show up on my wife's tablet or computer.

Kobie, welcome to the group. You have good correct feedback from others.

When you reply it is recommended to use the "quote reply" feature so it identifies to whom you are responding your comments.

Again, you are not forced to buy anything at any price. You are making a decision to spend your money and what you want to spend it on. If you have never been in the software developing, marketing, selling and supporting business then you don't likely know what you are even talking about. It is in my experience on of the hardest businesses to be successful in, especially long term.

I don't buy beer and cigarettes and I think those are very profitable companies but they are not getting my dollars. You can always go back to shooting film and developing in the basement if you want too. Or use a free program... and it is great that Canon and others provide software, but I assure you it is priced into their products.

I’m guessing the fine print written by the Nikon Legal Team would win out....but that is pretty crappy to say the least. I remember years ago a local store posted an incredible deal on an item I was buying and when I took it to the register, the owner or manager sold it to me for the bargain price because that was the posted price. That store won my loyalty. It’s very sad that some weasle words in fine print wins out. Keep us posted on what happens- I hope you get the camera for $1099!

Just a couple of weeks back I was at Lowe's (hardware store). There was an item that was listed at $64 with a sign on the pallet noting that it was on sale for $45 and would so ring up at the register. However at checkout when it still rang up at the listed price, the CSR investigated the matter and we looked at the sign and he promptly corrected the price at the register with an override to honor the price displayed on the stock. He then promptly removed the mistakenly posted sign on the stock to prevent further issues. That's just good business. Granted the magnitude of the error in Nikon's case is much higher, they still should have honored their erroneous price.

I will be taking a cruise to Alaska soon with my Canon 6D Mark II. My questions revolve around which lenses to bring with me. I have, or have access to the following lenses:
Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6
Canon 16-35mm f2.8
Tamron 24-70mm f2.8
Tokina 24-200mm f3.5-5.6
Sigma 70-200 f2.8
I am definitely taking the Tokina because of its all-around range, but what other lens (only one) would you suggest I take and why?

On my journey to Alaska (flying in to Anchorage and doing a land trip), I managed with the 24-70 2.8LII and the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II. I was able to cover everything I needed. I did however carry both my 5D3 and the 7D2.

As mentioned in the past I was a freelance SPORTS photographer 15 years: 1969-84. This was my first PRO game a BIG one at that! The Buffalo Bills vs The New England Patriots Sunday November 6, 1976 - HOW OLD WERE YOU! Kneeling on the field with my Nikon FTN mono-pod mounted older Nikkor 300mm f4.5 with Kodak TRI-X ASA 400 b&w film.

Next to me on my left was Neil Lifer with his Nikon and mono-pod mounted Nikkor EDIF 400 f3.5 lens (a new not on the market yet lens) next to him was Walter Iooss with his mono-pod mounted Nikkor EDIF 600mm f5.6 lens. Both Neil Lifer and Walter Iooss are staff photographers for SPORTS Illustrated Magazine!

The game started and the crowed roared! After 9 minutes in the game O.J. and a Patriot player were ejected from the game for fighting. The fans BOOED for at least 2 minutes maybe longer!

But, it gets better! Back then you had now way of knowing what you made on your exposed film until it was developed. As you all can see I did make a classic photo, made by me: Anthony P Gawrys not Neil Lifer or Walter Iooss Jr. from SPORTS Ill. HOWS THAT! AP

It seems that in the early fall I start to get emails about the 5DayDeal. This is always advertised as an all-new Complete Photography Bundle with lots of courses, presets, info, etc, that if bought individually, would cost thousands, as opposed to their bundled "deal of about $100".. I just received the email that the deal is coming again, mid October, for 5 days only. Has anyone purchased the deal in past years, and if so, has it been worth it? And if you have received the emails, and decided to pass..why?

Yes, I am on their mailing list as well and got that e-mail today. I've had their offer for a few years now every time they run a promotion. I have not bought anything so far. Seems while it looks enticing it's a lot of stuff I have no use for and would end up with a lot of clutter.

Hello

I am thinking of possibly traveling to Costa Rica in January of 18' , and might stay in Playa Conchal. Was wondering if anyone has traveled near there and can give photography locations you would suggest?! Any suggestions and ideas would be helpful, and thank you in advance !!

Did a Caravan tour in Jan 2015. It was well put together and had plenty of opportunities for shooting.

Will send you a link to my album via PM. Costa Rica is a photographer's paradise indeed.
