Stephen,
Thank so much for your helpful comments. I can see how the optional viewfinder must make the camera much more bulky and harder to carry but I was afraid I would regret no having it as an option. Here is a link to the order I placed. (Yesterday they said 4 in stock. I see it's now down to three. I think means mine is on the way.)
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cyber-Shot-DSC-RX100M-Vario-Sonnar-Viewfinder/dp/B00E3GDZEK/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1382274192&sr=8-19&keywords=Sony+DSC-RX100M+II
There is some junk included that I probably will never use, like the card reader and filters, but I wanted everything else to arrive at the same time so I would have it in time for vacation. This bundle had everything I wanted.

Have you ever attached any of your Sony flashes to this camera? I have many Sony flashes including the little HVL-F20AM that I normally use on my A900. I'm hoping that with the adapter that flash will fit this camera. On the other hand, I understand the flash on the camera is powerful and versatile. I think it's too much to expect the flash to act as the master in the Sony/Minolta master-slave flash system.

I'll open my friends book and see what he says about flashes.
Stephen, br Thank so much for your helpful comment... (show quote)

The first thing to understand about the optional viewfinder is that with the viewfinder attached the camera does not easily fit in a pocket. But, attaching and detaching the viewfinder takes less than 5 seconds. Just snap it in and snap it out.
I have a Sony HVLF20AM flash that mounts on the camera using the Sony ADPMAA Shoe Adaptor. The adapter is $25. The newer Sony HVLF20m flash works without an adapter.
This flash with the the adapter works on both my RX100MII and my NEX-6. On the NEX-6 the HVLF20AM flash will remotely trigger my Sony HVL-F43AM flash giving me off camera flash capability. I assume this will also work on the RX100MII but I have not tried it.

Damn Pete, your good! Oh, what the hell. I feel like an ass for being so coy. It can't do any harm to just name the camera. He recommended I buy a Sony DSC-RX100M II. He also recommended that I do NOT buy the electronic view finder (EVF) that Sony makes to go with it. He points out that the EVF costs half again as much as the camera and destroys the pocketability the camera. He says that if you wear glasses, bright sun light can leak into the EVF. He suggests that one can tilt the screen on the back of the camera to escape the glare of sun light and to trust the auto-focus.

I'll ask his permission to give his name and also recommend his book, here on UHH. If he grants me permission, I'll spill all the beans.

Pete, you are yet another "expert" who must like that camera. I'll order one today.

All of that being said, I know many of you know a better camera. I'm sure your right. I don't want to start a debate.

As I am the owner of several Sony cameras I would like to comment on the Sony RX100 mII. I like to try all sorts of photography. Animals, Landscapes, flowers and more. My main go to camera is my Sony NEX 6. But when I go to the zoo I take my Sony A55 with my Minolta 100-400 zoom. I use this camera because of the in camera stabilization when using a zoom telephoto.
For landscapes I use my Nex-6 with the Zeiss 24mm lens or my Sony 10-18mm zoom. Great camera and both are great lenses. I expect that the new A7 when it arrives will be my go to camera for landscapes.
However my almost constant companion now is my Sony RX100 MII. It is my only camera that can fit in a pocket or a small holster on my belt. It takes great pictures and does not get in the way when I am involved in activities like cycling, hiking etc. or just sightseeing.
On the question of the optional viewfinder two things are true.
1. It is very expensive.
2. With my aging eyesight it is essential for me when I choose to manual focus.
I find that I end up mounting the viewfinder most of the time and highly recommend it if you can afford it.

I pre-ordered an A7 body on Amazon this morning. I bought the body only because I plan to add the Zeiss full frame e-mount 24-70 zoom which will not ship until February. Until then I will use my existing e-mount lenses and A mount lenses with an adapter. I will also be upgrading my LA-EA2 adapter to the new LA-EA4 adapter. I have legacy Minolta glass that I am looking forward to trying out on this camera. It will be interesting to see how much coverage my Zeiss 24mm emount lens will have on this sensor. I read an article yesterday that speculated that this lens may work full frame.
I bought on Amazon because they are offering a 2% rebate on some cameras and lenses. Nobody is discounting these cameras that I know of.

You can download software to help recover any photos that might be on the memory card

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec is just one of several that are available.

I was just surprised that I cannot do multiple deletes from the Develop module.

The best way that I know to delete multiple photos is as follows:
1. Go the the Library module.
2. Go through the photos one at a time using the arrow keys.
3. On each photo that you want to delete hit the "x" key.
That marks the photo as rejected.
4. When you are done marking the the rejected photos then hit "ctrl-backspace" to delete the rejected photos.
Rejected photos can also be deleted from the photo menu.
To un-reject a photo just hit x again.

The coffee table must have been shot with a Sony, nothing is in focus (You Sony people didn't think you could sit on the side and laugh at the C&N people while they tore each other up, did you?)
This is fun!

I shoot Sony and I was enjoying this thread immensely until your comment.

It is probably too late now but you should have returned it. I buy on ebay on a regular basis but it is buyer beware. I too purchased photoshop on Ebay only to find out that they were trying to sell me a pirated copy.
I said no way and my money was refunded.

I joined last night and downloaded Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5.2 without a problem. I am a longtime Lightroom and Photoshop Elements user. I bought a Photoshop CS5 upgrade on Amazon for $195 and used that serial number to sign up for the $9.99 deal without a problem. I was never willing to pay $600 for photoshop as elements did what I needed. But now for $195 and $9.99 a month I am up and running on Photoshop cc.

For the Nikon fan boys: Let me first say Nikon has surpassed Canon in a very few niche areas ( this is probably very temporary) While Sony has Canon and Nikon both beat with innovation. MOST INTERESTING, is Ken Rockwell's latest epistole ! - http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/00-new-today.htm - scroll down to "Canon or Nikon? Two years ago I switched from Nikon to Sony. In the film days I was Minolta fan. When the time came to go digital I went with Nikon. Now I use Sony and have lots of old Minolta glass to choose from. It all works on my Sony bodies DSLR, DSLT and EVIL.

See Trey Ratcliff's article. http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2013/07/04/sony-nex-review-nikon-vs/

A few rules from my experience.
1. Buy name brand only. Sandisk, Sony, Kingston, Transcend, Patriot etc. Do not buy generic cards on ebay.
2. Class 10 means that it can do at least 10 megabits transfer. Many cards are faster. Class 2, 4 or 6 may be two slow for some applications. Buy class 10 only.
3. SDXC cards are faster and bigger but may not work with some older cameras and computers. SDXC cards will not work with my Apple Ipad. SCXC cards are better if they work with your devices.

Personally I use Sandisk extreme cards without a problem.

HDR is a Zone System photographer's wet dream.
The original Man Ray probably would have used it in the overdone HDRish way and even grunge.

Fort years ago I studied the zone system. I tried to incorporate some of what I learned into my photographic process. Over the last couple of years as I have been watching and the HDR debate I have often thought that this is the zone system for the digital age.
I can now do things in Lightroom and Photomatix that I only dreamed about in the pre-digital age.

I'd like to purchase a wireless remote, but am wondering if it's worth it. Any suggestions/recommendations/when to use one, etc.? Thanks in advance!!

I use an Opteka remote. These are less than $10 on Amazon. Make sure that you get one that is compatible with your camera.
Use it when your camera is on a tripod. Helps eliminate shakes and can also be used when you want to be in the picture.

PSE vs lightroom is a regular discussion here on UHH. Lightroom will do 90% of what any photographer needs. In Lightroom you can do all of the camera raw adjustments. You can do filters. You can remove unwanted objects.
PSE adds the ability to combine photos, remove backgrounds and do layers. PSE does not do batch processing.
In Lightroom if I have 50 photos shot under the same conditions I can adjust the white balance on one and then duplicate that setting to the other 50. PSE does not do this.
Lightroom does not do layers. Layers allows you to combine photos and or parts of photos. If you are using Lightroom and you have a photo that can benefit from layers you have several options. They are:
Photoshop
Photoshop Elements
Gimp
Paintshop Pro
OnOne software suite.
