Does your camera have the U1 and U2 settings? I've never used them, but I should.

Jerry I find these very useful settings. I use U1 for landscapes and fixed and slow moving subjects. Aperture priority base of F/8 and other landscape type settings. I use U2 for BIF set to Shutter priority with a base of 1/2000ss and other settings for fast moving subjects. Very easy to setup, set your camera to the setting you wish to save (I call them base settings), go to the Setup Menu - Save User Settings, save as U1 or U2. On my D7100 the only modes I use are U1, U2, and M. One example would be a sunset. I go to U1 - 'A' priority with the base of F/8. Change that to F/4, change other settings. Now I want to go back to my Base settings. Switch the mode off of U1 to another mode then back to U1. You will now be back to your U1 base settings. This is how I use U1 & U2 hope this helps. - Bruce

After doing more thinking about the AE-L/AF-L button, and talking to my grandson who knows more than I do, I assigned "AF-on" to the button so I don't have to rely on pressing the shutter button halfway down to focus each time.

I have looked through the user manual, and perhaps I just missed it, and haven't found an explanation otherwise, so I am asking you all who might know. I have been trying to assign the AE/AF lock button on the back of my D7200 and noticed two things: 1.) The manual says when the button is pressed, AEL or AFL should appear in the viewfinder or LCD panel next to the in-focus dot. I don't see that in either. 2.) When I press the AE-L/AF-L button and turn either of the command dials, the numbers 24--16 or 18---12 appear in both the viewfinder and rear LCD panel, as well as the small upper LCD panel. I am curious as to what these numbers mean. I should also add, that when I do this, numbers appear in the lower right corner of the upper LCD screen like this: [1.3] or [2.0]. Does this refer to the image area?
I have looked through the user manual, and perhaps... (show quote)

Wingpilot in your manual checkout - Custom Settings Menu - F/Controls. F4 will describe all the options for the AE-L/AF-L. I set mine to AF-ON for BBF on my D7100.
