Personally, I love the composition as is. It shows the fireplace in its total environment and that can make for a nice photograph. Not so well versed in pp, but is there something you can use to make all those lovely browns pop just a bit more?

This is really a beautiful series. You get to see the bird in action from beginning to end. Totally agree with Cindy; love the last shot!

Thanks. What exactly does this mean "the highlights seem to be blown out" in layman's terms?

"Blown out," "overcooked," the descriptive vocabulary of photogs. Don't you love it!

Great shot from the Coronado side across the bay. Love the reflections. Makes me think of going back there to shoot it again myself.

Just noticed your comment about Coronado. Mentioned that in my comment also!

I've taken shots of this same skyline in the daytime. (Mine are from the beach on Coronado.) This night shot is very striking. Love the reflections.

The statue is very dramatic. For the butterflies, I prefer #2 because it shows the butterfly in its environment with the background not overly busy as it is in #1. Interestingly, I'm not very excited about last year's winners. Good luck, Tom!

Love the B&W. You can really concentrate on the shapes and textures. The window looks good. Not entirely into the blue cast of the color, and for this store, the color seems to detract from the overall photograph.

They may be simple figurines, but the moody lighting evokes a feeling; the "real meaning of Christmas"?

Ultimately that seems to be the difference between a snap shot and a good photograph. Good photographs tell stories. Like yours.

Thank you, dsmeltz, for your kind words. Appreciate it.

Right on! Normally it works best to have more room in front of a person, but in this instance the story seems to be about leaving the dock at the end of day, in which case the subject is more the empty dock than the person. The story IMHO should direct the composition at least as much as some frequently touted "rules".

Thanks for your comment. This is another reason (not that I consciously thought it) for flipping the photograph. The "story" calls for it.

Motion from left to right is more pleasing. While I usually leave more space in the direction being traveled (when shooting photos of runners since the story is about where they are going) here the story is about where she is coming from. Very nice composition when flipped.

Thank you. It just felt right to flip the photograph. I agree that left to right is more pleasing. This photograph felt "awkward" before it was flipped around.

Thought I would throw in this over-the-top front window display of a high-end dress shop in California. They cater to the rich and famous.

I'm going to jump in and support the B&W. It is a more "moody" photograph and because the horse is black and white, the color presents almost as a distraction.

Nice set Michael, I've been on that Serpentine Road between Palm Springs and Idylwild many times..Pg. 4

Thank you, Lesley. Yes, that road is pretty to photograph but a bit wild to drive along.
