I was told by a private plane pilot that Polarizing sunglasses were illegal to wear while piloting an aircraft. I believed him because I once had a vehicle with a radio that had a 3x4 inch screen to display and change settings. If I had polarizing glasses on the screen was completely black, as if the radio was turned off. I, also, had this same issue with early versions of the Garmin GPS unit. I imagine it would be hard to pilot an aircraft with black gauges.

On the other hand, I had had a couple other vehicles that were unaffected by polarized lenses. Same as with the newer Garmin devices. So someone figured it out.

I have two catalogs (Folders/Directories) of images -- one pre-digital images (scans) and the second digital images -- each about the same size... 100,000 images. I keep copies on three external hard drives. A couple days ago, I had one fail. It took a little over twenty-five hours to copy one folder to the new, replacement HD.

A year ago, I was intrigued with the "Cloud" storage thing and tried to upload the images. The first Folder gave a "time to completion" of nine days. I let it run for 24 hours and came to the same conclusion. That was just too long for me to essentially tie up the computer -- for instance, a reboot would be ill-advised... as would a crash of any kind. (BTW, a reboot would be automatic with Microsoft's new update procedure.)

Anyway, I am still at the triple-copy local storage stage and would welcome an easy. peasy off-site solution. (FWIW, I use http://www.bauerapps.com/compare-folders-windows-compare-advance/ to keep the three copies in sync.)

Thank you. No, I am not interested in either GPS or bluetooth. Am hoping to figure out to connect the camera to my iphone for an occasional uploading of a photo to social media.

I don't remember about the SX50Sh but the SX60HS has NFC (Near Field Communication). If your phone has that capability, all you have to do is get the phone close to the camera and the image (that is active) will transfer to the phone automatically.

I've heard this debate on the SX50 vs the SX60 for quite a while too. And many don't realize that the SX50 has been discontinued for a long time. As for myself, I would take the SX60 over the SX50 any day of the week. The same debate came about when the Nikon D7200 was released. Nikon D7100 owners said it was better than the D7200. It was not.

I had a SX50SH. It was stolen and I replaced it (insurance) with a SX60SH. I didn't think to compare the two cameras at the time but (its been a couple years now) I have never been unhappy with the SX60SH in any way. In fact, IIRC, my first impression was "impressed" but I don't trust my memory like I used to.

What would you have improved in the SX70? I have a SX60HS and cannot image it needing any more than perhaps an internal GPS tracking device and Bluetooth. (it does have NFC and WiFi.) If those two things are not that important, the camera has everything one could ask for.

Something no one has mentioned - security. Several years ago I used to leave my computer on all the time. I discovered that my internet connection was allowing someone to remotely access my computer when I wasn't using it. So, if you leave it on, make sure you disable the wifi until you want to use it again.

I may be way off base but I have never heard of a way to access a remote computer through Wi-Fi. Through an insecure Router by gaining access to the network would, of course, allow that.

Good question. I have a similar question and I do leave mine on all of the time, but am wondering about being infected with viruses when left on all of the time. And yes I know it is possible to get viruses at other times also but am wondering if it is more likely if left on all of the time?

The Internet is global... so it is always 5:00 somewhere.

The only protection against outside influence is with resident (and active) programs, Windows Defender, https://www.safer-networking.org/, https://www.malwarebytes.com/, and suchlike programs. Trying to guess exactly when some nefarious person will attack is like timing the market -- a fool's quest.

I always turn my MacBook Pro off at night. It contains sensitive personal info that I would rather not have compromised.

But you feel comfortable with that fear during the day when it is on? <grin>

Not particularly Germaine to the issue but it should be mentioned that energy usage may be something to consider while decided which option -- off or on -- is best for one personally..

Mine is always on. However, once in a while the programs start to do strange things, or something doesn't seem to work any more.
To prevent that from happening, I reboot the computer once a week or so. Or if I forget, and something that worked 5 minutes ago, now doesn't, I reboot immediately.

I echo that. I have two desktop machines -- one that has been on continually for about ten years now and the other for around five. (I do not allow "sleep" nor "Hibernation" to engage -- I merely turn the monitor off or on as needed.) Neither show signs of distress caused by this behavior.

The Laptops are kind of different in that I simply close the lid which "pauses" everything allowing instant access when reopening the lid.

I used "Qimage Studio" for many years but when ddisoftware, in 2013, stopped supporting it (read updating), I found that LR did what I wanted. That plus they explained that the new version would provide no advantage to legacy users and would have a cost. I, as a result of this thread, looked at the current version (http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage-u/) and have contacted them for the offered discount pricing for us earlier supporters. We'll see what happens... in any event, I am happy with LR as my print program.

There are several. For very little money, Acronis Trueimage is top-flight.

I concur about TrueImage value. I have used this program exclusively for about ten years now and quite often (too often <chuckle>) restore a whole disk drive to an earlier point in time on one of my (5) computers when disaster strikes. Rarely do I use it to recover lost files but whenever I do, it is fast and efficient.

I don't like automatic backup. I prefer to decide what to backup, where, and when

I lean that way also but the OP asked for "automatic."

I use SyncBack SE to backup seven folders of files. I have it set to Mirror, so anything I delete from C will be deleted from the backups. Just for the fun of it, I made a box to hold two hard drives. I turn them on individually, and each is G.

I can only find that SyncBack (all versions) uses " Windows Task Scheduler" to "automate" the process. I am not that familiar with the operation of this program but would be interested if it (WTS) can be programmed to sequence the three different HDs during the process. (Hmmmm. Perhaps creating three separate macros would do it.)

Interesting DIY project but doesn't having to manually switch between the drives defeat the automate requirement?

I am a LR CC user and I have a modest collection of 45,000 Images. I exported these images as a Catalogue from LR to 2, 5 TB external hard drives and a 2 TB Portable hard drive for travel. One external is kept off site. ... My gas or Paranoia begs me to ask the question is there an inexpensive or free software package that can systematically back up my images, as always grateful for your expert advice

Just to clarify: You wish to automate the copying process (backup) of your image files to three separate and different hard drives?

My workflow is similar in that, in addition to the three "storage" drives, I copy the complete working drive (my catalog, etc., are an external drive) to an external drive that travels with me. I use the freeware program "Compare Advance" (there are other similar programs available) (http://www.bauerapps.com/compare-folders-windows-compare-advance/). Your question is a good one. I, currently, have to set the "copy" process manually for each destination drive separately and would love to have this on a schedule to automatically do it... one less thing to think about. Unfortunately, I can think of no way to do this except perhaps by a custom macro.

I will monitor this thread in the hope that someone has discovered an answer to your (our) issue.
