The Nikon d500 camera with the 200-500 mm lens weighs out at 6 pounds plus with the lens weighing 4.5 pounds alone and costs over $4000.00. The 150-600 mm lens (all versions) weigh over 4 pounds. She said she would like to be able to carry her camera and lens combination! While those are excellent choices let's get real here. None are even close to being "lightweight."

Nikon makes a light weight lens - 300 mm f4 - weighs in at 26 ounces and costs 2000.00. Could add an extender for more reach. Could use your present Nikon camera. I don't think there would be any problem with image quality.
At least you would be able to carry it :)
I use a Panasonic GX8 with the Panasonic Leica 100-400 mm lens. It is a slow lens so I shoot it wide open almost always. Image quality is good, weight is manageable, focus is fairly fast. Does it compare to a 600 mm prime lens. No, but...
Panasonic also is releasing or just released an upgraded version of their 100-300 mm lens that is about 20 ounces- good reviews- I haven't tried it.
I also use a Pentax K-3 ll with 300 mm lens for sitting birds- image is excellent and focus fine as long as the bird is not flying.
The other possibility- a 70-300 mm to go on your Nikon. Some of the lenses in that focal length have very good IQ and are light enough to hike with.
Good luck on your quest.

That's why we're going back. BTW, is Spring a good time? When is a good time for wildflowers?..I was on the Northern California coast a few years back, and some of the colorful succulents along the coast there were very cool.

We are part timers here- May-October. Still quite a bit of rain in April. There are wildflowers now and through early summer.

Thanks. We visited the Olympic peninsula about three years ago, including Ruby Beach. Never got to Oregon, though, as we were headed inland to her family in Spokane.

You missed the best part then :)

Thanks so much for the answer. My wife says she read that Sept is good, the weather is nicer and the crowds have abated. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks again!

Sept should be ok. The traffic and crowds decrease when school is back in session after Labor Day. BUT the RVers come out then :) I would aim for mid September- but still check the extended forecast. Definitely stay away in Aug with the eclipse happening- it will be a zoo. Later in Sept to mid Oct is the Salmon run. Lots of fisherman out then. So many things to see and do- it will be hard to choose. Astoria is the last Oregon city- across the bridge is Washington. Very pretty drive along that area heading N. Depending on how far you are going into Wa, Ruby beach is worth seeing. From there heading N you leave the ocean for awhile and enter Olympic National Park. Places to see- Bandon, Reedsport- there is an elk viewing area, Florence- charming vintage area along the river, Newport- a true fishing town, Pacific City, Tillamook Bay, Canon Beach, Seaside and of course Astoria.

Hi Suntouched--sorry to go OT, but since you're in Oregon, what is/are the best time(s) to visit the coast for photography? We want to drive up the coast from Northern Cal to Washington. Would like to avoid a lot of rain and clouds. thanks!

The coast is often cloudy in the morning and then clears to partially cloudy with some sun in the afternoons in summer. You can normally get an extended weather forecast for up to 7 days. Plan your trip around that. The Oregon coast is not like sunny California beaches. Expect cloudiness but not necessarily rain. The usual temperature is about 68 degrees so bring a light jacket or sweatshirt. Southern Washington (costal) is about the same. Traffic will be heavy on the costal Oregon highway in the summer. Although beaches will be more crowded in the summer, it won't even come anywhere close to California standards. Lots to do and lots to see. It's a wonderful drive! When I go to the coast I plan for partially cloudy days and light sunshine and low tide- much more dramatic pictures than full sun and cloudless days.

And sand!!! Can you do it? Of course. Is it a good idea? No it's not.

Ralph- your Fuji X-Pro 2 is weather sealed as is your 35 mm lens. Don't you take that combination out in inclement weather?

How do you like the 14 mm lens? I have my eye on the 16 mm lens- it's weather sealed :) And since I'm in Oregon half of the year I need that.

Lots of beautiful beach scenes on Flickr taken with all kinds of cameras. I'm sure each of those cameras didn't die after use on the beach! I have photographed on the beach many times without any problems. But when I do, I use weather resistant cameras and lenses with filters. Pentax is known for their weather resistant equipment. Fuji also has weather resistant equipment. Don't change lenses in the open, blow the sand off your equipment and then wipe down with clear water when you get home. And blow out the sensor. If you ever go to Arches (Utah) on a windy day it can be just as sandy as the beach.

My initial question has been answered- thanks for all the responses. I'm not a particularly good speller so I use spell check even with its quirks. Prior to that I used a dictionary - yeah I'm that old :)

My PC doesn't by default. Individual programs like MS Word have it. Personally I don't prefer spell check. It's usually too aggressive in trying to second guess what I'm writing. By habit I go back over what I type and edit it before sending. Most of spell check errors seem to be grammar errors when it thinks I'm trying to use a word in a certain context.

Same with my Apple phone but the computer is much less aggressive.

Do most computers have spell check? I have a Mac and it corrects spelling and some grammar. Could it be that all computers have spell check but users turn it off!! Or is spell check specific to Apple products? What does this have to do with photography you ask. It has to do with legible posts.

The Pelikan is a definite consideration, until you consider plane changes. For us, it will take three planes to get from St. Louis to Stockholm. If it were just one plane, I'd do the Pelikan check-in in a heart beat. But any regular traveler knows that two flights is a risk, and that three different planes is very high risk of ""lost or misdirected luggage"". That is what stops me from doing check-in with a Pelikan.

Are you talking about a Pelican case?
