That's kind'a what I was thinking. How do you get that close? I'm thinking of setting a branch into the ground and smearing peanut butter on it. I bet I get squirrels!
The squirrels will find it before the birds will.
I have feeders set up on post that the squirrels can't climb or jump on. I wire dead branches to the post above the feeders as perches. The bird usually land on the perches before feeding.
Also, I shoot mostly from a hunting blind on my deck or set up a remote camera.
I agree with Nick. These are probably 2 different types of woodpeckers.
We used to have many woodpeckers come to our feeders. It is often hard to tell the difference unless they are together. The little downey seems to have a different personality/behavior from the hairy too.
