That's kind'a what I was thinking. How do you get that close? I'm thinking of setting a branch into the ground and smearing peanut butter on it. I bet I get squirrels!

The squirrels will find it before the birds will.

I have feeders set up on post that the squirrels can't climb or jump on. I wire dead branches to the post above the feeders as perches. The bird usually land on the perches before feeding.

Also, I shoot mostly from a hunting blind on my deck or set up a remote camera.

Good luck and good shooting.

Curious to know how you can tell it isn't a Downy Woodpecker.

The Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers look just about the same except for size and the length of the bill.

The Downy is about 6 inch and has the shorter bill. The Hairy is about 9 inches.

Both are frequent visitors at my feeders.

Good shots.

I agree with Nick. These are probably 2 different types of woodpeckers.

We used to have many woodpeckers come to our feeders. It is often hard to tell the difference unless they are together. The little downey seems to have a different personality/behavior from the hairy too.

The Downy is much bolder than the Hairy.

Thanks Annie.

They are kind of shy and don't take direction well. :D

Suspect the 1st is a Hairy Woodpecker & the 2nd is a Downy Woodpecker. It's hard to tell them apart other than size.

The beak is longer on the Hairy.

The first woodpecker is about 9 inches tall; the second is about 6 inches.

Kind of like Arnold and Danny in twins.
