I have been a casual photographer for many years. I understand the exposure triangle and composition parameters, but there is so much I don't know.

I have traded upwards over the years from various Canons and now find myself owning a full-frame Sony a7ii, and a few lenses, including the 35 mm 2.8, the 70-200 f4 G lens and the 28-70 kit lens.

In my discouraged state of mind, I'm considering downgrading back to Canon, probably an 80D, or maybe venturing into smaller format Nikons.

Is this crazy? Should I just continue to struggle with the excellent equipment I currently use?

I have a Nikon D500 and enjoy this camera very much. I wanted a second camera so I was going to buy a Nikon D5300. I wanted a smaller camera to keep with me at work also to let my wife use it when we travel. She did not want a small version of the D500. I ended up buying one of the Sony a6000. We are very happy with that camera.

If after advertising my cameras and lenses here, on eBay or on Craig's list, they haven't moved, which is better to sell to outright: B&H,key, or Adorama; or to trade in?

You can get a quote from Adarama and BH via email. But if Adams says $1300 that's not what they will give you. They will give 70% of the $1300. They sell it for 1295.00 or so. BH gave a $1000 email quote. Now if they give you the $1000 then best with them.

The Adorama one I saw was a refurbished DEMO. I wonder if that makes a difference?

I sell professional camcorders. Sony Panasonic for example. You are correct. When a dealer orders a demo unit or one to "show" and one to "go" they get a nice discount off the dealer cost. They are to keep the one to show for a pierod of months. But they can sell the demo at any price they want to. I think in the example of prices the Adaram unit was purchased at a discount from Nikon as a "show" therefore they can sell it at the lower cost. I have bought Nikon lenses at a good discount this way. I bought a 200-500 lens from Adarama this way last month. My D500 was also purchased as a certified refurb. I'm happy with both purchases. Hope this helps.

I am flying to John Wayne airport this coming Sunday and will be at a convention in Anaheim all week. I will have a free day Saturday 12th and maybe Friday 11th. I'm bringing my camera gear (d500 200-500 lens) and wondering where to go for wildlife photography. I don't mind driving a couple hours away. Any suggestions?

These are differences between manufacturers, not differences between technologies; controls on my MILC Pentax Q-7 and my DSLR Pentax K-30 are virtually identical. If Nikon would construct an APS-C MILC, it would have technology of A6000, but controls of D500.

That would be nice.

Very nice. My wife grew up there. Ten years or so while riding my Harley I pulled into Trumps mansion stopped snapped a shot of his front yard showing a putting green with his dinning room in the back ground. Split before his guards ran me off. This was back in the day when he flew a huge garrison flag in his front yard. I figured if he could fly that flag when the people Palm Beach did not like it I could take a picture of us house. I'll try to find it and post it. Palm Beach is very photographic.

The question was - which is better.

If you think neither is a clear winner - than dont waste our time pontificating on why you think there are pro's and cons - nd then not even saying what you think are the pro's and con's ! What does your rambling say ? ..... It says people may have design preferences - in response to the question - which is better. You are clearly the type that just likes to hear yourself speak. You dont even care what you are saying. You just like to be listened to. In actuality - you are just wasting peoples time here.

markjay, which type do you think is better?
I use booth. Sony a6000 and Nikon D500. For me hands down D500 is better. Bought the a6000 for an extra camera. My wife wanted a smaller lighter camera and my daughter needed a camera for a South African Safari vacation we went on in June.

D500 controls and menu system is better. Both take nice pictures. a6000 can be a kind of point and shoot if you want to go full automatic. Live View is simpler for some adjustments on the a6000.

I said the idea was stupid.
Unless it applies to you as well.

OK I get i, but there you go again, even after I said I never did do it. Like I have said, I have seen people using a monopod in a moving truck but a boat makes larger moves and I agree with you.

Ditto on the monopod. Stupid idea to use one as it just accentuates the boat motion where hand holding you naturally adjust for most of the motion and you don't have the motor vibration being transferred to the camera that a mono-pod would do.

Thanks for calling me stupid. The reason I asked is saw a guy using one on a tourist truck on a safari in S. Africa. Never said I would do that just tossed out the question.

I did not use a monopod when we went. But I guy had a monopod on the truck at at a Safari picture shoot I went on a few weeks ago and his shots came out nice. But I find in these situations you have to be flexible because you have to move quickly due to the movement of the animals.
