Places you could do additional self-guided research on any suggestion include the-digital-picture.com and kenrockwell.com.

Something that might be harder to find is compatibility issues of Canon's newest mirrorless models. The 550EX mentioned above can attach directly to the EOS R7, something more advanced models are identified as incompatible in the EOS R7 Advanced User Guide.

The 550EX isn't the top line, but certainly a fine flash for a multitude of needs, aka 'good'. We're unsure of your family member's needs. Something like the Canon EL-100 flash would be an excellent replacement for a 'pop-up' flash found on lower-end cameras. This flash fills many needs, but will perform best as a fill-flash, again like a pop-up flash on other models. It's even better than a pop-up, as the EL-100 can be used as a bounce -- off the ceiling, or wall by rotating the flash head.

Newest models like the Canon EL-5 would go beyond a 'good' rating to near 'best', filling all flash needs, including operating off-camera under remote control by the EOS R7.

Thank you for the information!

Thanks, but, I wouldn't know a good flash from a poor flash. Am looking for a recommendation of a good flash to consider buying.

I want to purchase a good Canon (Speedlite) flash for my granddaughter's Canon EOS R7 camera. Looking to pay less than $100 for TTL ability. Need not be a true Canon flash. TYIA!

I am looking to buy an inexpensive TTL flash for a Canon T6 camera for my granddaughter. I have looked at the Neewer TT560 Manual Flash, however, it does not have TTL and it doesn't appear to have a head that will tilt to 180 degrees. I would like to keep the cost less than $100, if possible. Thanks!

I was mistaken about the camera, it is a T6, not an R6...........sorry!

I purchased a used Nikon D500 from MPB 6 months ago, and soon thereafter a XQD card for it used. They are my goto camera supplier.

Consider upgrading to back button focus. Use the AF-ON button for spot focus and set the joystick button for group focus which is ideal for birds in flight.

I failed to mention that I do use BBF when I shoot. I often times, accidentally, hit the joystick when I do. Therein lies the problem.

Go to the Nikon website and download the D500 manual - its free. It will be a big help in answering questions you might have with the 500.

Really?

I am new to my D500 and have noticed that the way I have the camera set up, often times in shooting, I will accidentally hit the joystick in the back of the camera. Is there an easy way to turn it off, when I have my shooting point on target?

I prefer release for both a2 and a1. I want the shutter to go off when I push it. I do mostly action shooting in af-c and I do not want any delays.

Thanks for the input, photoman.

I use mostly Release Priority on my D500s. When I do use BBF, I just turn a8 off for one click access. Everything else is set to factory de faults unless there is some specific neef to change. This approach works great for me. I think you may just need to experiment a little bit to see works best with a1 and a2.

Thanks, Larry!

I have my camera set up for a1 AF-C priority selection to release. a2 AF-S priority selection to focus.
For AF-ON, find AF activation in the Custom Control menu a Autofocus and set it to AF-ON Only.
All this information is in your owner’s manual.

Thanks, Mac. I appreciate your information.

Thanks for your reply, Hasslla, however the link above does not tell me how to set up the shutter button for BBF. I have looked at several youtube clips, but none of them give that information either. So, back to my initial question....... A1, AF-C and A2, AF-S..........Release, Focus, Focus+Release, or Release+Focus.......which are the correct settings for the shutter release using BBF? Thanks again!

I finally decided to buy a Nikon D500 that I have desired for a long time. I have used “back button focus” on my D7100, however, I am not sure what the settings should be for the A1 & A2 settings so the camera gives priority to focus or shutter release. Most of my camera shots are of my 6 grandkids sports activities so I use the AF-C priority selection. Any suggestions/tips on how to set up the camera would be greatly appreciated. TIA
