The 18-135 is not a GOOD lens - OK if you do not look close or if you have really never had a GOOD lens. None of the earlier wide range APSC DSLR lenses are any GOOD - only the short range ones are. Sad, but true .....8-(

And yes, I am ready for all the push back on this statement ...

OK, here's some pushback! For the price, the Canon 18-135 is a very good lens - I know because it has been good to me for years. And yes, I do know a good lens when I get one.

Need some feedback for purchasing my next lens.

I currently have a Canon 90 D. The only lens that will work with it is a Sigma 150 -600. It's great for my wildlife photography which is my focus, but I still need something else to continue to do other types of photography.

The budget is limited since the camera and lens are relatively new purchases. I want to do some landscape, flowers, and general all-around stuff. With my flowers, I typical lean more to close-ups, and I currently use my iPhone for that.

I am currently looking at trying one from Amazon (free return policy). The Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 is a Standard Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (New, White Box). I know it's not a USM, but I wonder if it might be a stop-gap lens. I'm open to looking at other ones, but recently, this one has popped up.

I typically purchase from B& H. Also, open to refurbishment.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Barb

The Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 is my favourite lens. I've used it my 70D and 90D cameras for a long time and the results are always good.

Enough already! Surely 20 pages of comments have done this subject to death. Respectfully folks, can we move onto something else now?

I’ve read through Rick’s original post and several pages on this feed that followed. They’ve made me think about which of my photos please me and the reasons why. I rarely post unless I think I have something worth looking at.

My first question (to myself) is “What makes a good photograph”? To me, it is rarely a photo that is technically brilliant. It’s because a photo says something about the subject. In my case the subject is usually human.

The handful of my people photos that stand out over the years are great because they reflect the personality of a person or reflect something that was happening when it was shot. I know they are good because of the responses I get from those who know the subjects. Those photos are way more meaningful than a so-called professional shot taken in a studio and sold for large sums of money.

Here’s an idea for you all. When you want to post a photo to UHH, in the Gallery or somewhere else, how about explaining why you like it and why you think it’s worth showing. If we all understood that, we would probably view your photos in a different light.

Which image do you like best? These two shots were taken a few seconds apart, but I was using a zoom lens and the first shot was taken at 324 mm and the second at 151 mm. Both shots were taken with a Canon R6 at SS 1/200 (to capture the rain drops), ISO 2500, f/7.1 (wide open with this lens). The first shot has a branch in the lower L corner cloned out. Both shots were processed in PS with birds brightened and BG darkened slightly. Both shots are about 75% FF.

They're both nice, but if I had to choose just one, then it would be the second showing 3 parrots.

I have asked myself this recently and I am reading a book that among other things, promises to “ and finish with how to find your purpose in photography.”

That is a bold claim and something I have asked myself more than once. There is no single answer of course, because it is subjective subject.

So I am curious, what do readers here say in response to “What is your purpose in photography?“

Why do I need a purpose? Can't I just like it?

Several years ago I bought an Epson V600 for copying old photographs. It's slow!!
I watched a video, produced by B&H, with a photographer who has a setup using a camera stand, 22+ mp Camera, side lights, and Macro lens. its much faster, but the setup is pretty involved.
If you copy old photos, what is your most successful method?

I copied all my "keeper" photos, slides and film using my Epson V550 Photo. It was time-consuming but it was very successful.

Hello! I am planning a 2025 African Safari. I am interested in large game (lions, gorilla's, elephants, etc. It is a bucket list vacation.

I just purchased the OM Solutions 150-600mm lens (300-1200mm 35mm equivalent), but is is not weather sealed. I have web pages that detail, by month, the overall weather for each month.

It appears that it is BEST to go when it is dry and dusty for that is when large game gather around shrinking waterholes.

If I do go then, what type of precautions should I take to protect the lens from dust? Has anybody been on an African safari who can tell me anything that they learned? Is the lens only good for borders, for which I don't have the skill set.

Anything I forgot to ask that I should know? Many thanks in advance! Linda

I went to South Africa (Kruger National Park) in October which turned out to be ideal. Weather wasn't too hot and there were no mosquitos. My 18-400 Tamron lens was a great choice. There were only a couple of shots that I couldn't get because animals were too far away. I did take another shorter lens which I used a little bit. Lots of animals come quite close to your safari vehicle. I took a cloth bag to put the camera in when not actually shooting. That worked well. Keep your gear to a minimum

2 photo of my son's dog Khaleesi. The first one in black & white was taken on the day they got her from the rescue place. The second was taken on her first birthday. As you can see she's incredibly large! She's part Cane Corso and part Dogue de Bordeaux. Very sweet animal.

I've got an ET-7700 that I have been trying to resurrect (Nozzle Cleaning / Power Cleaning) to provide (just) acceptable prints. I thought I was having some luck...but after a couple decent prints it reverted back to ink spray and color problems. Frustrating...

I've been contemplating trading up to an Epson ET-8550. All I read indicates it should be a much stronger photo printer. Does anyone have any experience to share?

Would hope to be able to get to a space where I don't feel like I am always fighting the printer.

Thx in advance.

I had to give up on my Epson 3000 printer a few months ago. It was past redemption. It worked wonderfully for a very long time but such printers have a lifespan. I did have it professionally cleaned a couple of times but an Epson rep at a professional photography show told me honestly that after a few years and the beginning of problems, it's time to buy a new one.

The Kate affair is all so stupid. The British press is the worst of the worst when it comes to invading famous people's lives. Even a future queen is entitled to some privacy. Nobody has the right to know everything about her. So what if she made a few tweaks to the photo? That doesn't mean that she wasn't really in the shot, that she's dying or hiding somewhere. The dastardly so-called photojournalists should leave her alone. Oh, and i'm a Brit.

Sorry for the rant.

I watched a video on YouTube tonight of colorized Civil War era photos. Most of the photos I have seen many, many times over the years, and I am amazed by the difference it makes to see them in color.

I'll put the link in the next post.

For me, seeing historical photos in colour is not necessary. I think they look inaccurate. Colour isn't needed to see life as it was. In fact, there are lots of photos that are so perfect in black and white that they need nothing else introduced to make them better. That's my personal opinion, of course. Can you tell that I prefer B&W over colour?

Ever see someone wearing one pant?

Such a good point. I'm a copywriter who produces copy for a clothing retailer's website. They continually send me information that talks about a pant or a jean. They say that the client is always right. Rather than get into an argument about what marketers put on the web these days (apparently they know what's what!) I quietly change the composition so it's acceptable to two-legged shoppers.
