With a trip to Antarctica coming up in December, i am thinking about a new body and using the trusty D5300 as a backup. All of my lenses are Nikon or Nikon-compatible with focus motors and image stabilization built in. Most are also DX, so i am not interested in an FX or any non-Nikon body. And i hefted a new Z7 at a camera shop and found it surprisingly heavy and expensive, with just one card slot, so I am going to stick with DSLR.

On a recent trip to Australia and New Zealand, i had my first-ever SD card problem. It was a new Sandisk Extreme 32G card which had worked before, but the camera said it was bad. Fortunately, there were no images on it yet and I had plenty of other cards. I am therefore thinking that the new camera should have two card slots so I can store every image to both. There was a survey in 2014 that seemed to conclude that SD card failures are rare.

Anyone have new quantitative info on that subject?

Candidates so far and main drawbacks of each:
D500: -No pop-up flash - No GPS - Big -Heavy -Different battery (from D5300) -Screen only tilts up or down
D7200: -No GPS -Different battery - Fixed screen
D7500: -No GPS -Different battery -Screen only tilts up or down -Only one SD slot*
A second D5300, Compared to any above: -less weather sealed -Lower performance -fewer buttons/dials, no top LCD display

*If the D7500 had kept the dual slots from the 7200, the choice would be a no brainer. How important is dual slots really?

I highly recommend you get a D500. Full pro, weather sealed body that will use all your existing lenses. You will be blown away at the improvements it offers over your entry level D5300 body.

My vote is the D500. Love this camera. Endless ability to buffer so great for fast-moving subjects.

I bought a D5600 last September, and like it very much. I am still learning as much as I can about it, and reading up on the line of cameras above the D5600. I have 2 DX zoom lens and enjoy the autofocus. But I also have 5 Nikon manual lens and a Nikon F2. I haven't given up on film and will be developing my own film. Maybe fire up the darkroom when I get into our new house.
I have worked with NEF files and while it interests me, not there yet. The older lens from the F2 work fine on the D5600.
The D7200 and D7500 are tempting, but I will pursue the 5600 until I find it inadequate.

I love my D7200 and frequently check against newer models. The D7500 seems to be a downgrade to me and the D500 isn't sufficiently better to warrant the extra cost. I do believe the D800 series is probably the best upgrade option for me but can't justify the cost for amateur photography. I have one slot set for JPG and the other for raw. For normal use JPEG is good enough but occasionally encounter a shot or series that could be improved starting from the raw file. Having both available as an option and backup works. All this being said, my recommendation would be for a D7200 - a great bargain at the current price and available on the used market.

I shoot with a D7200 and love it, but I’m close to pulling the trigger on a D500. Depends on what you want to spend. The D500 looks like the best crop sensor DSLR ever made. It’s truly a professional level camera. But with prices slashed on the D7200 it’s probably the best value.

From the OP: Many thanks to all who have replied so far! There are many factors to consider, but there is also plenty of time. I have seen predictions that both the D5600 and the D7500 are due for a replacement during 2Q2019. The D7600 is likely to have even more performance like the D500, e.g. 10 fps and a bigger buffer. But still just one memory card slot. So i will wait for that official announcement.

Also, the Antarctica tour offers photo experts and an opportunity to try some of the latest gear from B&H Photo (see attached from brochure). I am going to explore how that works..perhaps I could borrow a D500?

Has anyone done this type of polar region tour with National Geographic?

If you don't like the hefty price tag of the D500, go with the D7500, that's what I did, and have no regrets.Unless you are a pro and and do photography for a living, do you really need 2 card slots ?

Thanks again for all of the great inputs!

Having Googled about some more and visited a couple of New England camera shops, i no longer plan to wait for the D7600. If it was going to be released in 2019, it would already be announced, as i understand how Nikon works.

I took my new Peak Design10L sling bag, with the D5300 plus one lens downstairs, to one shop and found that the D7500 with a 16-300 zoom also fits OK upstairs, but the D500 does not. Either way, there is not enough room left for my SB-700 speed light...more criteria for the decision.

I found the following D7500 review, based on a month of use and 6000 wildlife shots by Steve Perry, including comparison with the D500 and D7200, to be very thorough: https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?fr=yhs-mnet-001&hsimp=yhs-001&hspart=mnet&p=review+of+D7500%2C+D500.+D7200#id=1&vid=82dcd09028bdcef6a14baa6d072fa066&action=click

Thoughts? recommendations for other reviews?

I learned more from Linblad about the Demo Gear from B&H for the Antartica Expedition in December. You can sign up to try it out free, then buy it if you want. The list is highly Canon-centric and includes binoculars, Sandisk SD cards, 6 different Canon lenses, 6 Canon cameras, and 15 Sigma lenses and converters. Nothing made by Nikon, but the following Sigma products are Nikon mount: 120-300, 18-300, 100-400, 150-600 Contemporary, 150-600 Sport,1.4x and 2x converters. I will bring my Sigma 50-500 and probably try out a 150-600.
