All excellent points. There was a lot of info I did not know. Thanks for the EDUMACATION! Here are some additional suggestions. Try some test videos. Try video taping a plain scene just to see how the camera behaves. Add a LED light to the camera's hot shoe. Keep the camera still by using a tripod or a monopod. Good luck!

A good modern DSLR will provide you with professional quality hi def or 4K video.

With the original 7D's 18 mp sensor you should get around 12 minutes for each 4 gig file. That would mean theoretically a maximum of 96 minutes of recorded time on a 32gb card. In the real world I wouldn't expect more than around 80 minutes or so in total. When each 4 gig file size is reached the video feature will stop and must be restarted. You will also need video software to put the separate 4 gig clips together.

Another possible issue is sensor overheating which was not an uncommon problem with video on earlier generation DSLRs. Overheating will shut down the video recording feature. If that occurs the sensor must cool down a bit before you can restart shooting.

You can also shoot in lower resolution which will give you much more recording time per each 4 gig file. In that case though recording will still automatically stop when the video clip reached 29 minutes and 59 seconds.

The 4 gig file size is a limitation of the FAT32 format. A PC is typically formatted in NTFS and doesn't have this small a limit.

Agreed, but unfortunately the file system must also be supported by the camera, and the 7D only supports FAT 16 and FAT 32, not exFAT or NTFS (first thing I checked).

Yes, but regardless, the OP's 10 year old 7D camera does have this limitation.

I have no knowledge of Canon specifics, but I have had both a Nikon D200 and D300 of roughly the same age that had that same limitation when manufactured. Firmware updates were issued for both cameras which expanded the memory capacity, meaning that the file system was changed in the process. Any possibility that the same change was made available for the OP's camera?

The offsetting news, which may be considered good or bad, is that a camera of that age will also be limited to a smaller HD format, reducing the requirement for larger file sizes and faster memory.

Here’s the movie resolution formats supported. The manual says FAT16 or FAT32, and I didn’t see any change in the FW upgrades, but I traded my 7D a number of years ago, and haven’t been keeping up with FW upgrades since, so always possible I guess.

I have been asked to make a video of a church service at one of our churches on the Navajo Reservation. Nothing professional, just to help promote our missions when we do presentations back home here. My question is, how many minutes of recording do you think I can get from a 32gb CF card. I will be using my Canon 7D. The part of the service that I will be recording will probably last about an hour. Thank you in advance for all of your help. Kerry
