The American Bittern is one of the more elusive birds to photograph. If you are lucky enough to spot one it probably won't be for long.

Good shots. I know how hard they can be to get. They always blend so well into the pickle weed and reeds. I did stick with them long enough though to get some images of one in flight. Took me a long time to get it.

They are indeed hard to photograph. I've only done it once. Good job.

Ahh, the old "pump handle." Great shot. I've seen one of these birds only three or four times (never when toting a camera), but I hear them quite often in the early spring mornings. Their camouflage is peerless, and they are known to stand erect with beak pointing skyward and sway in the wind like the reeds around them. A very cleaver bird.

I was able to capture one once ... but it was quite a distance away ... & the images were nothing like yours. Nice captures. Thanks for sharing ... guess I'll have to keep trying!!!!

Nice work, you are so right about the difficulty of spotting these shy birds. A descent photo of these guys is still on my "to do list". Way to go lrjames!

Very good spot and shoot.
Over here they are the same. I have never managed to see one.
