Yada yada yada...I’m all for paying my fair share when the fat cats start paying theirs.

That's a cop out.

Everyone has the same obligation; to pay as little tax as possible and to take advantage of the tax code to the best of their ability.

You included.

Everyone is paying their fair share...as little as they can get away with.

I noticed that whoever says this only points to those who make more than they do...lol.

Hello, I have bought from both the local store and B and H and Cameta. I like using the local store because they are also an authorized Nikon repair shop. I have bought my last three camera's (Nikon's) from them as well as tripods, and accessories. Because of my being a customer for over 25 years, they are always giving me some free accessories, great advice, and fast turnaround when I need repairs/sensor cleaning. I would research your local store in terms of recommendations (Yelp) and make your decision as to which way you want to go.

It’s not a cop out. I pay what’s required. It’s an observation that those with the most have the most influence over those that write the tax code and that tax code is written to favor them. And if you understood anything about taxes you would understand how regressive sales tax is.

Local stores never did me any favors, rarely gave me valid information, and do not even provide adequate meter free parking....so screw them. Adorama, and B&H, have always done right by me. They provided good gear, at good prices. Whether new, or used, it was always accurately described, and delivered in good condition. My first choices, for good gear, are: Nikon, Adorama, and B&H. If they don't have what I want, I look at mpb.com, and KEH Camera.com, and thephotocenter.com. I have had no problems with any of them so far. Online is the only way to buy photo gear, as far as I am concerned.

The tax usually goes with the state of purchase. If you are buying in a state with no tax (via online), or in a state which waives the tax for online sales, you owe no state any tax. If you live in NY, which has a sales tax, but buy online from Oregon, which has no sales tax, the sale occurred in Oregon...so no tax is owed. If NY has a sales tax, but waives it for online sales, you owe no tax. If a NY based retailer sells you an item online, and does not charge you tax, and NY feels tax is owed, it is up to NY to say so. If NY wants to spend a hundred thousand dollars on a prosecution to collect the $20.00 it thinks you owe, let them do so. Then, publicize the details of the case so NY citizens know how stupid their DAs, judges, etc, are. See if that doesn't get some fools thrown out of office...giving you the last laugh.

Both are excellent, I have used both for various buys/sells and they stand behind all of their deals.

I've finally decided to buy the Fuji X-T3 w/18-55mm - financial stretch but satisfied with choice. Dilemma is:
Local price = $1699 black body & lens + 8.75% CA sales tax - no extras, buy good people.
Adorama = same price w/ accessories bundle no tax - if I buy B4 April 15
B&H = same price + abbreviated bundle - no tax
I have never dealt with the online retailers and am a little nervous after reading a few negative reviews. Yet many of you seasoned UHHers seem to have good luck buying from online camera retailers.
Comments & Help would not be turned away.
As always many thanks.

Those bundles generally don't have much stuff that is really useful, the thing about buying from your local retailer is that if you want to keep his store around you need to support it, where I live we don't have local camera stores because they have all gone out of business.

B&H have been pretty good for me, and collected the taxes due and have been very quick to ship with DHL who actually find my address, unusual for couriers.

If your 'local' store is a convenient place for your to stop in; and the sales people are experts; and it is a place you can actually put your hands onto merchandise that you are considering to purchase; and you see any value in having them as a resource; both for merchandise and expertise...I would buy your camera and lens from them since their price is the same. Figure that your $148 in tax to the state may be used for something beneficial (let's not get into a discussion about this); but also that this is a small price to pay for everything that this store and people can offer to you that does not have a price.

I drove 95 miles to check out the Tamron 18-400 at a brick and mortar, was willing to pay the extra sales tax. Asked about their return policy...10 days for store credit only. Went home and ordered from Adorama...had it for about 6 weeks (Christmas returns policy) to try out the lens and fine tune it...decided it wasn't what I needed. Returned it for a full refund, no questions asked.

You are a better man than me! 95 miles is not a walk in the park to a local shop where I live. Buying online in this case makes sense. Of course, confirming a return policy is all part of the 'price' from any retail store.

Will your local dealer match the price? If so buy locally. They offer valuable support. Over the years I’ve done both. Bought my D500 locally but I traded a lens in to Adarama for a 200-500.

Don’t buy grey market.

Adorama is excellent, but nothing on earth is perfect. If there's a mistake, they'll correct it. As for the local/online dilemma, that's a tough choice. How would you feel about buying from Adorama and then setting fire to almost $150? That's a significant amount of money. Keep it yourself, or give it to the politicians.
