Check out Pixel remotes. I have one and it works great. It's wireless and has a bunch of features.

@ $10. The Nikon ML_L3. Doesn't do anything except fire the shutter by IR. Mine works very well inside of 15 feet directly behind it.
Or the the MC-DC2; same function but with a 1 meter cable.
Or at least look at the JJC TM Series Multi-functional Timer Remote Control. Does a *lot*.
YMMV

Doesn’t work with D500 or other top tier Nikon which don’t have IR sensor on camera. Otherwise, a great solution.

There are a lot of options out there and you will hear many of them pretty quickly. Here are my two cents. One of my Christmas presents was a Vello Freewave Plus. It does everything that I need it to and has a range of 300 plus feet. Farther than I would ever get from the camera.

So far there are no downsides to this remote trigger.

I also have several of the Vello units, Freewave Basic and Plus, and agree, they are great little units. I use them on Nikon D90/7100 and Sony A-mount bodies. Can't think of any downside, work as advertised, and simple to use.

Looking at B&H, there are several options at various price points. With my D500, I have come to loathe the SnapBridge app and would not suggest it. I have a Nikon wired release that I got for ~$70 IIRC. It works great, but I have to remember to reset the BBF for normal operation or manually focus with the BBF before hitting the shutter release. I am having a difficult time figuring how, if you spent ~$2K for the camera, cards, etc., how a <$100 OEM cable is breaking the bank. Aftermarket items may work, but the Nikon release has been flawless and has a high build quality.

Are you sure they are all compatible with the D500???

The beauty of using the app, aside from the fact that it’s free, is that you can see what’s in the frame when you snap the picture.

I have two Yongnuo remote triggers. If I put one on the camera with a connecting cord to my Pentax K3, the other is the trigger from up to 100 meters. Works with or without the flash. I think the pair was in the $30 range. Good luck.

Yongnuo makes a series of radio transceivers that are reasonably priced. Transmitter on the camera and receiver on the flash for off camera work. Radio signal reaches 300' and not subject to line of sight. Many other brands to choose from.

I have 3 of the Vellos. one bought on sale for half price (B&H), one used from B&H and one that came w/a Sony body off E-bay....probably less than $90 in the 3.......all work great. There are others, and apps, I've also used my little drone 5.8ghz transmitters\receivers and viewscreens to do remote work with my cameras, and app to tablet/PC/Laptop combinations, lots of choices, all workable, really another realm of photography, remote work.

This only works on models with infrared sensors. It won't work on the D500.

Whatever model you buy, radio control is the way to go, whether by WiFi, or R/C units. IR is OK for indoors, if your camera has the receptors. Wired tether is somewhat OK, but I always worry about catching the wire on something, pulling the camera over, or ripping it from the connection point.

I have Nikon remotes for both my D7100 and D850, don't use either since I found out how to use the self timer and time delay features built into the camera software. I use a tripod and set the delays to minimize mirror slap. It works.

The issue there is he’s using it with the 150-600, so chances are he’ll want to have more control for when the shutter actually fires.

My bad. I read the D500, saw the D5500.
The tiny Nikon clicker is handy. I can set the camera up on a tripod, sit at the table, and click away.
Taking pictures of kids in the yard, or older kids at the reception, the subjects don't really "see" me.
Even outside, under 15 feet and right behind the camera, no probs.
The next one is just a fancy looking 3foot cable release. Keeps the shakes away.
I'm interested in Door #3. Looks interesting. I know nothing more than Mr Google told me.
