I've always used mullet/cut mullet for blues.

That's definitely a good bait, a lot of folks here use artificial also.

I immediately liked #2 by far. Then, reading comments, couldn't understand why so many liked #1. Then someone mentioned the space above the rod, and then I understood. Until I noticed that, I liked #2, now It's number 1. If it were up to me, I would cut out the clouds and past them in higher in the photo, which would then be #3 as my favorite:-)

Thanks for your thoughts BigDaddy. The first photo was the one I cropped and felt it looked fine. Then I thought maybe it would look better in a 16:9 ratio which resulted in the second photo. That became my favorite. Now.........after reading all the comments I am swayed back to #1. You are right though, I think a #3 could have the best of both images. Ahhh, how fickle we are.

Thanks for participating. The vote now stands at 22 for #1 and a paltry 4 for #2.

#2 And I would also do massive cropping from the right and the bottom.

I like the first one. It gives you more working space for matt or frame or canvas wrap to frame the scene. The left side then limits.

Thanks for opining mhannah.

I had a tutorial play on Amazon Fire TV in which the instructor said that you need a small allowance to be at the bottom below the subject and twice that allowance of space above the subject's head/top. based on that advice, you might try cropping No 1 from the bottom until the space below his feet is half the distance above his head. See if the instructor's advice works for you.
ALSO
The subject seems (at least to me) crammed up against the left edge. Is there more photo there in the original so he can have a little breathing room?

I understand what the instructor is saying as you relate it, however, seems this may be just a loose guideline which will depend on the image. Yes, the subject is crammed up on the left edge and, unfortunately, no photo exists where he can have more space there. Thanks for your detailed comment.
