Self drive car at tech show damages camera.

This article is a little old but I didn't see it come up in a search.
Some guy at a tech show damaged his sensor while taking photographs of a self driving car. Apparently the laser based guidance system left a streak on the sensor. Hope these things don't hit the streets. Could be a real problem for 'street' photographers.

Wow! How about damaging the eyes of people?

There was a similar article posted a while back. It referenced lasers at concerts, as well.

All lasers are characterized for eye safety, with parameters of power, distance, frequency, pulse, and length of exposure. I won’t claim to be an expert, but know people who have taken laser safety courses, and have spent enough time developing controls for laser systems that perform several functions.

I find it hard to believe that a system could be sold as part of a consumer product that could be a serious (or even minor) health hazard to third parties.

Note that some lasers work outside of the visible spectrum.

Yes, I saw that article too. There have been others circulating around photography / digital camera circles.

Big business & small businesses have been selling/providing things that harm people and animals forever, all in the name of profit, and have proven over and over again that they are only concerned with profit, .....pretty easy to believe that will continue at an even greater pace with the current administration, as they slash and gut health, safety and protection programs that are suposed to protect us. Note - this is not a political rant, these cuts and things are going on daily, as industry insiders have been put in charge of regulatory agencies, one only has to read/see the news (from balanced and verifiable sources) each day to know this is going on. I'm not a fan of big government, but large & small business definitely needs "regulation" to keep them from poisioning us, harming us, stealing our money, (the list could go on for a few sentences), etc.

While you may not think this is a political rant, it is!!!

No one in industry will develop a product that is harmful on purpose. It simply not good for business, the cost of recalls, fines, lawsuits and productivity is too much. Having said that it has happened that products have been found harmful, this is rectified by recalls forced upon them by government oversight, public outcry and lawsuits.

BTW the reason business operate is to make a profit, this pays the employees, taxes and adds to the economy...

It is a rant ( I admit) against the businesses/industries that have often knowingly did things that surpress the truth about their products or services. Your first sentence, there have been a great many cases where the product/service developer knew there were issues. It is not good for business, yet decisions are often made that do indeed come back to haunt the current owners/shareholders to a great degree/and the victims even more so. And, if you remove the regulators, you are part of the problem, not a cure.

I too know a lot about small and large businesses, I spent my working career for some of our largest and most successful coorporations. I will say this; In several of them, every couple of years our "in house" training included ethics, people abuses, and various other training. All well and good, only to later have managers and directors tell me to my face to ignore or look the other way when they would break or skirt the rules for their own benefit, or benefit up the line.

I stand by what I said, but I should not have made it sound like all businesses were/are that way, there are many fine and honest business folks in our world, but there are far to many bad ones, and someone needs to watch these people so they cause less harm.

I support the right of both of us, and each citizen, to our opinions, and the ability to share them.
