I understand that it is wise to check the weather before venturing into the narrows there as flash flooding has some people to drown. I think it was just last year that the flooding took several lives in one family.

I'm glad we plowed forward. I think all the people that were getting into the water at Sinawava made it appear doable. We hopped in and eventually found out that trek poles were our best friends. The deeper sections were poke/touchy/feely for hidden rocks, so a little slow going in spots while getting steady footing. Until we got to the Narrows there were long rocky "beach" sections that were dry and we made good time on. Everyone would cross the river to get to the next dry stretch. This would continue for about a mile+. In the Narrows, it was all water and lower body. The deepest water was up to the top of our thighs, about 3ft. If the water was waist deep, with the clothes we wore, I think we would have turned around.

The section I did walk was as you describe. I don't think I could do thigh-deep water. Was it running very fast?

Thanks, love that canyon. In the narrows they claim in the narrow parts you can see the stars in the day time because it becomes so dark.
The Narrows are closed right now because of flash flooding due to too much rain. We have had a really rainy spring this year and are looking forward to all of those desert flowers. It looks to be glorious.

Be aware of the weather north of the park and the Zion NP alerts on line. Don't get into flash flood situations. It's not just the water volume but the things it carries. The serious hikers wore wet suits and river shoes, they were going longer and into deeper sections that required some swimming/treading. But we were in the Park on a good stretch of weather and I did some on-line research before the trip. So we thought the risk was low and went.

We could navigate in all the sections. I think we did about a mile into the narrows. I was more worried on the way back, with the water pushing us. Finding spots to rest and having a steady buddy is very helpful. Also take a backpack with food and some drinks! No cell phone service in the canyon for us.

Some people hike the canyon from the top down, through the narrows. At one point you are walking chest deep through running water and there is no shore just cliffs on both sides. The water is not extremely fast on normal occasions but in a flash flood you would definitely be killed. The have a shuttle the allows them to do this. I did it years ago when I was in college. It was a fun time and very memorable.
To the other one who commented. Yes it was last year that some people were killed but it was outside the Park in an area called Colorado City. All the washes in our area can become a hazard during a rain storm.
Love the canyon but respect it for what it is. BTW the road to Kolob Canyons is closed, also.

No problem. Even without a hike up the Virgin River, Zion was an amazing place for us.

It was indeed. Some of the prettiest landscapes I’ve taken were from Zion.

Thank you Jan.

That turn #3 provided interest on the return trip also. A few people in wet suits were rappelling down the opposite wall.
